Her paintings were exhibited at a number of London galleries and were instrumental in preserving the contemporary visual aspect of Iraq immediately following WWI.<br /><br />Edith often accompanied her brother Major Robert Ernest Cheesman 1878-1962 on his military duties including his explorations into Saudi Arabia around Hofuf. She became acquainted with Gertrude Bell painting her house in 1921 which is currently on display in the British Embassy in Baghdad and King Faisal I her portrait of him currently hanging on walls at MI6. She also designed the countries first unique postage stamps displaying various important Iraqi art and architecture which were used between 1923 and 1931.<br /><br />Scarce only in 5 UK institutions BL Oxford Dublin Cardiff Dundee.<br /> London, A. & C. Though first written in the late 1870s this work first appeared serially over the course of six months in the publication 'Young Oxford' beginning in September 1902. Present here is the first edition in book form of this very scarce work.Scottish writer war correspondent and feminist Lady Florence Dixie presents a verse drama which depicts a Utopia for women in the society of Saxcoberland on the planet Erth with is similar but not identical to our own Earth.In her preface Dixie explains that this feminist work 'drama demands Justice for all living things from Ruler to Subject of either sex and for the brute Creation'. She asks 'shall Progress be deterred by antiquated ideas and opinions founded in imperfect knowledge'.Illustrated with a colour frontispiece.With twenty pages of advertisements to the rear.Former owner's stamp and inscription to front free endpaper. Breese Jim / How fortunate and happy I have been / Florence." <br /> <br /> Welch worked as a newspaper journalist and activist for women's suffrage in Topeka Kansas later moving to California and marrying prominent artist and writer Rob Wagner. In 1929 the pair founded "Script" a left-leaning weekly literary film magazine that often published interviews and articles concerning progressive and radical topics in Hollywood. Welch has also been credited as an early supporter of writers William Saroyan and Ray Bradbury publishing their work extensively in the magazine.
