She was considered to be one of the most literary ornithologists of her time. Written with the amateur in mind these books encouraged the study and observation of birds in their natural environments and based their science in ecology. Birds of New Mexico is considered to be Bailey's magnum opus and was completed at the request of the U. S. Biological Survey. Bailey was the first woman to be awarded a Brewster Medal by the American Ornithologists' Union in 1931 and was given an honorary doctorate by the University of New Mexico "in recognition of the educational and scientific value of her work on Birds of New Mexico."</p><p>Containing color illustrations by Allan Brooks 1869-1946 a Canadian ornithologist and artist known for his impressionistic paintings of birds that focused on the environments of the subject over detailed plumage. Brooks is also interesting for his service as a sniper during World War 1. <br /><br />Plates and text figure illustrations were done by Louis Agassiz Fuertes 1874-1927 an American ornithologist and the most prolific and influential bird artist in the United States after John James Audubon. 1927SKU2020026793Houghton Mifflin Company 1927. Hardcover. Very Good/No Dustjacket as Issued. Florence Augusta Merriam Bailey 1863 – 1948 was an American ornithologist birdwatcher and nature writer. Between 1890 and 1939 she published a series of field guides on North American bird life. These guides were often written with amateur birdwatchers in mind leading to the popularity of the birding movement. Bailey was one of the first nationally recognized female ornithologists of her time and dedicated her life to educating the public about the vitality and protection of birds. As a student she penned the first of many articles arguing against the fashionable use of bird feathers and wings as adornment. At age 26 she published her first book Birds through an Opera-Glass which was widely regarded as the first modern traditional bird guide. She co-organized early Audubon Society chapters and became the first female associate of the American Ornithologists Union. Her tireless role in advocating against the systematic devastation of seabirds and wading birds led in part to the congressional authorization of the Lacey Act of 1900. Bailey wrote over 100 articles for several ornithological journals and 10 books including Birds of New Mexico–for which she was honored with the Brewster Medal which is awarded biennially to the writer of the most important ornithological work on birds of the Western Hemisphere. With her husband Vernon Bailey a U.S. Biological Survey naturalist she traveled extensively throughout the American West to explore little-known flora and fauna. Bailey’s unwavering love of nature and remarkable powers of observation combined with a talent for illustrative writing and a high reverence for science inspired others to discover the diversity and value of living birds. She also received a number of honors beginning in 1929 when the American Ornithologists' Union elected Merriam their first female Fellow. A scarce Bailey title. Houghton Mifflin Company hardcover
