Pagine di vita scovate e raccolte da Harvey Sachs in quest'opera monumentale in cui si riversano gli archivi della famiglia Toscanini, tra lettere, fotografie inedite e documenti per molto tempo rimasti inaccessibili. Vi si scoprono le letture amate, tra le quali trovano posto Byron e Leopardi, Shelley e Dante, Shakespeare e Carducci, e si animano gli abbracci fraterni con Debussy a Parigi, i battibecchi con Richard Strauss, aneddoti dell'amicizia con Puccini, l'amore radicale e irrequieto per la propria famiglia. "Toscanini" narra una storia in cui la vita privata e la celebrità internazionale del grande direttore si confondono fino a smarrire le linee di demarcazione, e la verità dell'uomo si rivela profondamente più interessante della leggenda consegnata ai posteri.
