Numerous illustrations from engravings. 9.75" x 6.5" original pale lavender wraps perfect-bound wraps 8 pp. 161 pp. 16 pp. supplemental articles ads. Some chipping along bottom edge some soiling. No that's not a crease at lower right - that's a bit of flippancy in Scribner's Holiday Issue cover design. A Strong Very Good or a bit more with even a virtually complete spine albeit end-tweaked -see scan. something of a rarity in that regard. See scans. Contents extraordinarily clean and bright. The original issue in wraps - not from the hardbound aggregations - of the August1880 issue which contains Ellen E. Dickinson's article "The Book of Mormon" "manuscript found" dealing with the claim of the daughter of Reverend Solomon Spaulding that her father had in fact written a work based on his actual experiences it is claimed at mounds he excavated near Conneaut Ohio in 1812 which was subsequently usurped by Joseph Smith for the creation of the Book of Mormon. Fascinating reading and the writing has a ring of authenticity to it un-hyped and oddly down-to-earth direct and sincere and simple for the language of the day - though I am certainly no expert on the subject. Other topics in this issue of the always thoroughly illustrated Scribner's Monthly - almost all thoroughly illustrated with engravings - are: About England with Charles Dickens Fra Girolamo Savonarola The French Republic Canada Whippoorwills the Grandissimes Peter the Great Curiosities of Advertising American Diplomacy Rivers superb engravings and the etchings of Seymour Haden. Supplemental section has an interesting piece with charts on horology: 'Extract from the Judges in Horology' from the 1879-1880 Sydney International Exhibition' with three charts which compare the performance of top watchmakers of the time. Very scarce as the in-wraps original. See scans. LG13 <br/> <br/> Charles Scribner's Sons paperback

25382‘Pais le 7. Xbre. October 1756.’. An excellent letter exhibiting precisely the sort of indignation one would wish for from such a renowned satirist. As a result of the furore caused by the publication in 1762 of his best-known work ‘Le Colporteur’ Chevrier fled to Holland. The French government attempted to have him extradited and his death that same year was rumoured to have been caused by poisoning. 3pp 4to. On bifolium. Thirty-nine lines of text. In good condtion lightly aged. The item has been expertly mounted and the thin white-paper mount still adheres to reverse of the final leaf. Slight damage caused to edges by the breaking open of the seal has been repaired with the same white paper. Addressed on reverse of the second leaf to ‘Le Reverend Pere Dom Pelletier curé de Senones’. Good firm signature ‘Chevrier’. He praises Pelletier for ‘les Peines que vous avez prises pour rassembler l’ouvrage que vous venez de donner’. Considering the criticism it has met with he has ‘presque Envie de haïr les Lettres’. He continues with reference to ‘Mon Plan moins respectable que le votre’. Pelletier should be aware that many of the great ‘doivent leur Eclat à l’adresse d’un copiste à la dexterité d’un apoticaire ou à la fidelité d’un tailleur’. Pelletier knows as well as Chevrier ‘les Secrets de l’Eglise’. From the celebrated collection of Baron Houghton in Lot acquired at Chiswick Auctions. See Image of pp.2part-3 ‘Pais le 7. Xbre. [October] 1756.’ unknown
1918170400London: Harrods Ltd 1918. First edition of Dick Holland's memoir of the years she spent working with the Red Cross during the First World War. This work is uncommon institutionally WorldCat recording only four copies. Holland volunteered as a nurse ambulance driver and stretcher bearer and was stationed in France Belgium and the Scottish Women's Hospitals for Foreign Service in Serbia. She recounts working on the front line and in hospitals and describes travelling by boat motorcar and train while maintaining an individualistic charm and optimism. Holland named this book Serbia at the suggestion of her friends who thought the latter chapter to be "the most interesting and contains more exciting stories than the other two" preface. This is possibly a presentation copy inscribed on the title page by one Marcia Lynch: "given to me by the author Miss Holland on November 19th 1936 when I went to show her my children's stories she says that she will help to get them published". Octavo. Original light brown card wrappers yapp edges front cover lettered in black. 177313873Paris: Chez Valade 1773 First published in Neuchâtel though the title-page says "Londres" the previous year this is an early perhaps the first book-length commentary on Holbach's Le Systême de la Nature which was published in Amsterdam in 1770 with a bogus London imprint. Printing and the Mind of Man notes: "Holbach's target was the very idea of God. Even Voltaire was moved to reply in defense of religion by this "bible of materialism" P.M.M. 215. Contemporary mottled calf gilt spine with burgundy morocco spine label edges stained red. Two volumes in one twelvemo. With nine cancel leaves bound in at the end. Binding extremities lightly rubbed. A very good clean copy. In the preface the editor states that he has made various textual changes and has suppressed certain passages without Holland's permission so that the book could have a wider distribution. This copy is interesting in that it contains both Holland's 1742-1784 original text and the editor's "improvements." He also made various improvements to Holland's French Holland not being a native French speaker. This first edition of his commentary is rare: OCLC lists eleven copies eight in North America Yale LSU Michigan Boston Public Library Oklahoma Texas and Montreal. It is uncertain whether the first edition has the uncorrected text which we see in the cancels or something even different. Chez Valade, unknown

ABC_45673Amsterdam 1660. Oblong 1mo full sheet broadside 40 x 50.5 cm. Hugo Allard the elder An engraved print with extensive engraved texts in Dutch the central scene 33.5 x 30.5 cm flanked by 6 smaller scenes with the title above the central scene in roman capitals with I and V for J and U 2 verse couplets below each smaller scene and the story in prose in the foot of the engraving. A very rare Muller print presenting an episode in the life of Willem de Goede William the Good Count of Holland in 1336 passing a just judgement in favour of a poor farmer against the rich bailiff of Holland resulting in the bailiffs execution. Although no other state of the present plate is known Atlas van Stolk points out that its plan and layout and lettering we would add so closely matches an earlier print showing the death of Floris V Count of Holland in 1296 De doot van Floris de V. Grave van Holland that one may suppose they were originally produced and published together so engraved by Experiens Sillemans and published by Cornelis Danckerts before the death of the former in 1652. The present impression without the name of the engraver but with the imprint indicating it was printed in Amsterdam by Hugo Allard the elder ca. 1624/25-1684 in Kalverstraat therefore shows the plate in what is probably its second state. With the print trimmed to the plate-mark edges a bit frayed some repairs.l Atlas van Stolk 142 cf. 117 the death of Floris V; Muller Historieplaten 211 I p. 18 and IV p. 20. unknown
