The binding as usual slightly shaky but in unusually excellent condition. No splitting of Spine which is often the case with this book. Interior excellent. Image measures 27 1/4" x 14"

A map of Prince Edward Island by Samuel Holland from Thomas Jeffreys' 1776"American Atlas". Holland arrived on Prince Edward Island in 1764 following the 1763 Treaty of Paris that ceded the territory to Britain. He spent two years mapping the island with his survey dividing the land into a series of townships known as "lots" parishes and counties. The map is extensively labeled with delicate hand-colored outline. A table in the upper left corner lists parishes and townships with their respective acreage. Another table in the top center of the map lists lots and proprietor's names. An inset map features the entire Gulf of St. Laurence extending from the river to New Foundland showing the northern coast of Nova Scotia the southern coast of Labrador and various islands in the gulf. This map is in excellent condition. Minor chips and tears to edges and a printers crease to lower margin not affecting the image. Otherwise clean and bright.

Samuel Holland 1728-1801 was a Dutch-born surveyor who was appointed by the British government as Surveyor General of North America.

Thomas Jefferys 1695 - 1771 was a leading mapmaker known for his detailed and influential maps of North America and the West Indies. Apprenticed to engraver Emmanuel Bowen in 1735 Jefferys began his career by engraving maps for "Gentleman's Magazine" before establishing his own business. In 1746 he was appointed Geographer to Frederick Prince of Wales and became Royal Cartographer to King George III in 1760. Despite facing financial difficulties and bankruptcy Jefferys' work was rescued and republished by Robert Sayer. His maps remained influential through posthumous editions by Sayer Bennet and others. Jefferys was succeeded by his son Thomas Jefferys Jr. and his plates eventually passed to William Faden. His contributions have had a lasting impact on cartographic history particularly in the mapping of North America.

Sayer and Bennett unknown
