He was best known as a sculptor and polo player although at various times in his life he was also a ballet dancer sailor boxer and fencer. He worked as a radio actor then in the early days of television before an extended period as an artist at the Walt Disney company….As a sculptor Thomas Holland achieved the greatest recognition for his heroic monument to the Pony Express which stands at the western terminus of the historic route in Sacramento California. 1957140948106Kingsville TX: Printed for the King Ranch 1957. First Edition. Fine. First edition the special limited "Saddle Blanket Issue" of the centennial history of the largest ranch in Texas. One of 3000 copies produced exclusively for the ranch; none were intended for sale and copies were originally gifted to recipients. Nearly forty years after publication in 1992 the King Ranch offered 250 copies to members of the Book Club of Texas and this is one of those copies. Rare in original cardboard mailing box as issued by the Book Club of Texas with prospectus pamphlet entitled "The Book of all Christendom" original invoice and transmittal envelope laid in. <p>Two volumes printed on all rag paper specially made for this book by the Curtis Paper Company bound in heavy crush linen stamped in brown decorations resembling the King Ranch saddle blanket and their running "W" brand housed in linen slipcase with leather label to spine lettered in gilt. Volumes Fine virtually unread. Title label to slipcase is dried and beginning to flake as it is with most copies although otherwise essentially appearing as new. <p>Originally planned as a 250-350 page private edition to be published on the occasion of the King Ranch centennial in 1953 the project grew to an 838 page trade book. The physical dimensions of the book and the internal design with its ample page margins and expansive chapter head designs are reflective of the immense scale of the King Ranch. He survived shipwreck and disaster only to be imprisoned for violating the terms of his scientific passport by changing ships and carrying prohibited papers. Modern half brown buckram marbled paper sides blue endpapers with an older ca. 1840 front wrapper bound in. 4to. With the woodcut crowned coat of arms of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V with the order of the Golden Fleece a column on either side and the motto plus oultre on the title-page. Set in 2 sizes of textura gothic type with 2 lombardic initials cast type. First and only edition of a rare ordinance printed in Delft. The ordinance promulgated 19 May 1544 tried to reduce or at least prevent a further rise in crime in Holland and even in other parts of the Holy Roman Empire by addressing the negligence of officers in enforcing the law. It notes that crime rates - from murders to fraud and other smaller incidents - are rising in Holland and across the Holy Roman Empire because officers of the law are failing to do their jobs in the eyes of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V and other lower ranking officials like the stadtholders in the Low Countries. The present ordinance addresses problems concerning the enabling fraudulent behaviour towards creditors of any kind authorities too readily issuing letters permitting deferment of payment resulting in an exorbitant volume of unpaid debts. In total the ordinance contains 40 rules and regulations mainly for officers of the law but also for criminals and others profiting from the lack of law enforcement decreed and published with the intent of bringing down crime rates and reminding officers of their duties. The printer Simon Jansz. in Delft printed the ordinance in two issues the present for Frans Duyck Pietersz. in the Hague and the other with his own imprint Typ. Batava 5796 2 copies.With contemporary marginal annotations and underlining of the text in pen. The second flyleaf is the older front wrapper with an inscription in brown ink on the back: "19 Mei 1544" along with an old catalogue clipping and a few pencilled bibliographical notes. 6463Eight letters from Mary F. Macareth to F. Holland Day comprising replies and queries to his letters over a sixth month period Aug. 11 1890 to Feb. 13 1891 regarding her father George Macareth who was a close associate with John Keats in early days of studying medicine. Fred Holland Day was an enthusiastic collector of John Keats amassed a large collection of Keats and Keatsiana and he led the campaign which resulted in the first memorial to Keats placed in Hampstead Church in 1894. These letters were written by Keats during his stays in London and Madrid while he was doing especially comprehensive research on Keats. In these letters it is clear that Day was trying to obtain Keats-related material from Macareth and the exchanges indicate a rather straightforward individual trying at once to help a prominent figure as well as trying to safeguard her own interests see below. Eight letters 12mo very good or better condition all but one are accompanied by the original envelope addressed to “F. Holland Day Esqre with the following addresses: 39 Medford Square London W.C. 18 Tavistock Street Medford Square London W.C. c/o Muring Brothers & Co S. Muchopyate Street London. E.C. Grand Hotel de la Paiz Madrid; and “ Normyâ€Mass America1 Aug 11 1890 3pp; 2 Aug 21 1890. 28 pages in total. Some brief snatches: aug 11 daughter of George Macareth “I have a pencil drawing which I believe was done by Keats or Severn whey they were all young men. I do not think it a flattering likeness.†Oct 11th. “I have this morning received the photograph of Keats forwarded from Elvington. She writes about several paintings which may be of some interest she will write to her brother as well and then: “Will you excuse me if I ask plainly what is your position or calling in life as I should then feel more freedom in my correspondence. Of course you are a perfect stranger to me so I trust will take my question in the right light.†Oct 17: “I received the enclosed photograph from my sister. I think the same as the one I have. It is a very good one and represents my Father at the age of about 70. I have received an autograph of my Father’s which I enclose. I fear I did not answer your question about the pencil drawing which you asked in your last letter. the lost miniature is not at all the same. I know the drawing is perfectly safe only I cannot get to it at present. Dec 4: I received your kind letter yesterday and am extremely obliged to you for lending me the prints from my Father’s picture which I think are very good. Feb 13 1891: Dear sir. I am now in possession of the pencil drawing of my Father and shall be glad to forward it to you if you still wish to see it. . I think it was done by Severn.†George Mackereth who kept trying to discard his middle name Wilson were not only fellow students but shared accommodation with Keats for a year from October 1815 at 28 St Thomas Street now marked by a blue plaque though the house is long gone. To be sure FHD was saddened to here it was done by Severn and not Keats. A most scarce and interesting archive indeed with plenty to mined here on both F. Holland Day as well as John Keats. unknown
