A Private press established by William Bernard Adeney and John Madden at South Park Reigate. The title to the book as it appears on the handsomely designed title page with wood block shields of the counties and principal towns is :- SVRREY AND SVSSEX FROM THE BRITANNIA OF WILLIAM CAMDEN TRANSLATED BY PHILEMON HOLLAND IN 1610 AND HERE REPRINTED IN THIS YEAR 1905. The text is the translation into Elizabethan English by Dr Philemon Holland in 1610 of Camden's Sixth Edition of "Britannia" which appeared in 1607.VG Book- Shelf wear rubbing and soiling to cloth sides and to leather at head of spine Plain Book plate of a previous owner to front and rear paste downs. Binding sound with a little ingression of dust/soiling to the edges of the book block due to uncut pages.No other notabel defects. Although not uncommon in the Camden's Britannia County Histories series published by Hutchinsons this Private press edition is a prize for collectors of books on Surrey and Sussex as the only other copy which can be found from a search of the internet at the time of listing is held at The University of Manchester Library. Illustrated with a colour folding map to the frontispiece one folding map one folding plate two colour plates and three plates.Collated all plates are present. Bound without endpapers.Sixteen pages of adverts to the rear.An early work by physician and travel writer Sir Henry Holland looking at the nature of agriculture in his home county Cheshire. Before beginning his medical studies in Edinburgh Holland was employed by the Board of Agriculture upon the suggestion of Sir John Stanley to report on the agriculture of Cheshire. This work provides a detailed study on agriculture in the county at the beginning of the nineteenth century with proposals on how to improve its state. Holland was a cousin of Elizabeth Gaskell and his great-uncle was Josiah Wedgwood. Later in life Holland gained fame for his travel writing. At a party hosted by relatives in 1836 he read pages of Darwin's journal he sent from his Beagle voyage. In a quarter cloth binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally generally smart. Paper remnants to the head of the joints. Light bumping to the head and tail of the spine heavier to the extremities with a little loss of paper. Minor rubbing to the boards. Front hinge is a little strained but remains firm. Internally generally firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some spots. Small closed tear to the folding map to the frontispiece.
