Erste deutsche Ausgabe der "Medical Noites and reflections" übersetzt von Joseph Wallach 1813-1873 Sir Henry Holland Bart. 1788-1873 "zu London war am 27. October 1788 zu Knutsford in Cheshire geboren als Sohn des dortigen Arztes Peter Holand studirte von 1806 an in Edinburg und in den zwei Borough Hospitälern Londons und wurde 1811 in Edinburg mit der Diss. : "De morbis Islandiae" Doctor nachdem er dorthin im Jahre 1810 einen vornehmen Herrn begleitet hatte. 1812 bereiste er Portugal Gibraltar Sardinien Sicilien die ionischen Inseln und Griechenland und diente die Veröffentlichung der Beschreibung dieser Reise 1814 dazu ihn in die Londoner gute Gesellschaft einzuführen ; auch wurde er noch in demselben Jahre zum Haus- und Reisearzt der Prinzessin Karoline von Wales ernannt. Er wurde 1816 in das College of Physicians aufgenommen und publicirte auch einiges Medicinische von seinen Reiseerinnerungen z. B. über die Bereitung der Magnesia sulfurica am Monte della Guardia bei Genua Philosoph. Transact. 1816 und "On the pellagra a disease prevailing in Lombardy" London Med.-Chirurg. Transact. 1817. Es trug ferner zu seinen Erfolgen in der Praxis bei dass er vier Jahre hintereinander nach dem Schlusse der Saison in London nach Spaa ging das damals in grossem Rufe stand und viel besucht war. 1828 wurde er Fellow des College of Physicians hielt 1830 die Gulstonian Lectures wurde 1835 Physician Extraordinary des Königs William IV. 1837 auch der Königin Victoria und später des Prinzen Albert 1852 aber Physician Ordinary der Königin und 1853 Baronet. Bei dem Jubiläum in Oxford 1856 erhielt er den Ehrentitel als Dr. jur. civil. Ausser einer Anzahl von Aufsätzen in den Quarterly und Edinburgh Reviews veröffentlichte er 1839: "Medical notes and reflexions" enthaltend 35 Essays über die Philosophie und Praxis der Medicin die mit Schärfe und Gedankenreichthum verfasst sind und von denen einige zusammen mit noch mehreren anderen später noch einmal u. d. T. : "Chapters on mental physiology" 1852 publicirt wurden. Er gab auch noch eine Auswahl seiner "Essays on scientific and other subjects contributed to the Edinburgh and Quarterly Reviews" heraus jedoch wurde von allen seinen Productionen gesagt dass wie seine Praxis mehr eine aristokratische als ausgedehnte war so seine Schriften mehr den Charakter eines kritischen Dilettantismus als solider Kenntnisse zeigten und seine Beiträge zur medicinischen Literatur mehr speculative Essays waren als auf sorgfältiger und eingehender Forschung beruhten. Während seiner mehr als 50jährigen Praxis in London brachte er bis an sein Lebensende fast ausnahmelos zwei Herbstmonate auf Reisen zu unter denen acht nach den Vereinigten Staaten von Nordamerika und Canada eine nach Jamaika und West-Indien drei nach Russland zwei nach Island u.s.w. stattgefunden hatten. Von diesen Reisen gab er in seiner einzig in ihrer Art dastehenden Autobiographie seiner letzten Publication den "Recollections of past life" 1872 die ein sehr unterhaltendes Buch sind ein höchst interessantes Bild. Nach dem an seinem 86. Geburtstage 27. October 1873 erfolgten Tode wurde von seinem Sohne dem Rev. Francis J. H. aus den hinterlassenen Papieren noch ein Band: "Fragmentary papers on science and other subjects" London 1875 herausgegeben." G. Hirsch-H.
