An untrimmed copy entirely in the original state in a very good condition. ~ First edition. Extremely rare. The annonymous veteran is T. J. Stieltjes (1819-1878). His controversial book created a rather tempered chain reaction, first with the publication of "Bedenkingen van een' jong' soldaat, tegen eenige der denkbeelden van een' oud' soldaat (.)" Amersfoort, 1843). When also the pamphlet "Vlugtige bedenkingen tegen de denkbeelden van een oud soldaat (.)" appeared shortly thereafter, Stieltjes was quick to respond and his publisher issued in haste the publication "Nadere ontwikkeling (.)" (Nijmegen 1843). A few years later Stieltjes wrote in length his "Is Nederland nog te verdedigen? Toestemmend beantwoord door den schrijver der denkbeelden van een oud - soldaat (.)" (Nijmegen, 1849), to be followed by "'Hoe Nederland te verdedigen is. In ruwe trekken aangeduid, door een Oud-Soldaat" (Nijmegen, 1853). See also: W. J. Knoop in "De Gids", 14th year, 1949-50.
