Two volumes. Quarto. I. Text. Pp. 63, xiv, plus 20 plates printed in fine tinted collotype on 10 leaves; II. Portfolio containing 42 leaves of plates with a total of 1060 portraits printed in fine collotype, each numbered at top right corner in neat contemporary hand and bears small unobtrusive stamp on verso. The first leaf is a decorative composite portrait of the Battalion's commanders. Hardcover, uniformly bound in red half cloth and printed boards, lettered and decorated in red and black, old small shelf ticket in matching colour, institutional stamp inside. In a very good condition, fine plates. ~ First edition. Printed by the Amsterdam collotype printing firm of Van Dias. [ADDED:] Original leaflet by Engelbrecht and Anemaet which accompanied the presentation of the first volume to the Subscribers. It announces their decision to issue this publication in two volumes, the 2nd to be followed in a later date. Each Subscriber is kindly requested to remit a total of 4 Dutch Guilders in order to cover the unexpected extra costs. ~ Beautifully illustrated. Collotype is one of the most accurate and attractive methods of photomechanical tonal printing processes. Highly skilled and expensive process, it cannot produce more than a limited number of impressions. It has been used for single-sheet prints and luxury portfolios, and since the 1950s has been abandoned by all except a few small specialist firms.
Royal octavo. Pp. 211. Plus a composite portrait of the Regiment's commanders as frontispiece, protected with tissue-guard, and many other photographic plates. Original black wrappers, lettered in translucent orange and nicely illustrated in translucent gold, shelf ticket, old institutional stamp to title; wraps detached, lower wrap missing, bookblock broken. In a very good internal condition, clean and well preserved. ~ First edition.
Octavo. Pp. 108. With 2 full-page illustrations, one the Fort bij de Liebrug and Penningsveer, and one of a Guardhouse, both with detailed nomenclatures. Full-page table. Original printed wrappers, back wrapper gone, spine chipped; old shelf ticket and old military institutional stamps to cover and title-page. Text in good condition. ~ First edition thus. Very rare. The articles first appeared in the periodical "Vragen des Tijds". Not in Jordan.

Hardcover, bound in the original publisher's illustrated boards, engraved armorial emblem to each side within decorative frame, shelf tickets to spine, old institutional stamps to title and prelims, title bit browned, boards worn, faded, soiled in places. In a very good condition. ~ First edition. Not in Jordan. Preserving the extremely scarce original armorial binding, very solid and still with a charm. ~ Johannes Gerrit Willem Merkes van Gendt, (1798-1859). Engineer Lieutenant Colonel, Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion, Knight of the Order of the White Falcon, Knight and later Officer of the Legion of Honour, Knight of the Swedish Order of the Sword, Knight of the Order of the Crown Württemberg. Prolific and brilliant writer he wrote extensively on military fortification, engineering and fortress warfare. He died as Mayor of the City of Gendt. ~ First edition of Merkes' "Verhandeling over het belang der vestingen voor den staat" in two volumes (Brussel, 1826-27), is also available by Librarium.
