At the age of seven, O'Sullivan (1904-1950) went to live with his grandfather on Great Blasket Island off the south-west coast of Ireland. This is his story until he left the islands for Dublin in the 1920's. Written in a magic realism style, it was meant only for his friends but gives a fair description of the last bastion of the original Irish culture and language. The book was originally published in Dublin in 1933 and later the same year in English.
