The first two acts are under William and Mary the remaining acts under William alone. Acts c.3 and c.4 are dated according to Lady Day dating. With two final contents leaves bearing tables of the public and private acts passed in the 1694-1695 session of Parliament; the tables are preceded by a blank leaf. Contemporary gilt-tooled calf contrasting red morocco lettering-piece. Heavily rubbed some splitting to joints chipping to head of spine. Loss to lower corner of leaf S2 occasional spotting/dust-soiling very occasional manuscript annotations to margins small worm-hole to upper corner throughout the majority of text-block. A manuscript copy of two letters by Lord George Lyttelton 1709-1773 providing an account of his journey in Wales - one of the earliest Romantic tourist accounts of the country - written in 1755 though not printed until 1774. The two letters were addressed to Lyttelton's brother Charles Lyttelton 1762-1768 Bishop of Carlisle though copies are known that were addressed to religious controversialist and historical writer Archibald Bower 1686x8-1766; indeed their first appearance in print was entitled An Account of a Journey into Wales in two letters to Mr Bower Annual Register 1774 XVII 160-4pp. Although these letters were not published until 1774 they were widely circulated in manuscript. . He attempted to establish the independence of Wales by restoring the see of St. David's to its ancient primacy. Volume I contains the De Rebus a se gestis an autobiography; Invectionum libelli a reply to calumnies circulated against him; Symbolum electorum which contains his letters and poetry; and other letters and poems. Volume II contains the Gemma Ecclesiastica a manual for the parish priests of Wales which presents a true and vivid picture of the Welsh clergy in the 13th century. Volume III contains the first four books of the Invectionum libelli a merciless attack on Giraldus' enemies; the De Menevensi ecclesia dialogus written for Stephen Langton on the Welsh clergy; and the Vita St. David. Volume V contains the Topographia Hibernica and the Expugnatio Hibernica. The former is the result of Giraldus' visits to Ireland; his account of Irish history is unreliable but the work is valuable for his observations of natural history. He records his own acute observations on the animals of Ireland in addition to recounting traditional medieval legends on them. The Expugnatio is poetical book of prophesy. Manuscript letter inquiring of the Holywell Workhouse Union in Holywell Wales as to whether it has a "surplus of agricultural labourers" as "my house has received an order from the Government of New South Wales to send out a considerable number". The letter was first sent to Newelyn Loyd of Denbigh from an unnamed but "most respectable commercial house. at Liverpool". He copies it here and forwards it to the "Guardians/or Secretary of the Holywell Union Holywell". On the inside folds Loyd explains that he thought it might be acceptable for the Guardians to place some of the occupants on the path to New South Wales by assisted passage. It is postmarked St. Asaph Oc 3 1838. <br /> <br /> The text continues with the terms - a Bounty presumably for the workhouse which would finance the journey; the labourers to pay L 2-3 and provide clothing etc. At Sydney "immediate employment at liberal wages: houses - specimen wages for different occupations "with rations for themselves & families" weekly "One peck of Wheat or 10 lbs of seconds four - Ten pounds of beef or mutton tea sugar. " It states "In ten days we dispatch one vessel and another will succeed her in a month. Shepherds Agricullurists sic Gardeners &c have been engaged at wages varying from L25 to L50 and in some cases for the superior Class as high as L80 to L100 per annum. Carpenters Masons Sawyers &c may obtain L2-2 to L2-10/ per week in Sydney. "<br /> <br /> 4 leaves 7 1/4 x 9" period folds slt separation central fold. Mackworth was a flamboyant character but whatever his flaws he played a major and innovative role in energising Welsh industry in the late Stuart period. For information on him and his dubious ventures see his entries in the Oxford DNB where his first name is spelt 'Humphry' and the Dictionary of Welsh Biography where it is spelt 'Humphrey'. With reference to the present item the Oxford DNB states that after previous activities bordering on the fradulent 'In 1713 Mackworth organized a new joint-stock company the Mineral Manufacturers of Neath with himself as cashier-general and by concentrating on brass production he built a prosperous undertaking. Supporters within the Mine Adventurers tried to restore his membership in 1720 exonerating him from past accusations but Mackworth overextended his hand by attempting to influence the election of a new governor. A shareholders' petition to parliament led to further censure. By then Mackworth's Neath operation was also in difficulties. The final years saw him embroiled in a court action over the fraudulent sealing of a document and a customs' investigation into the importation of contraband. His personal finances were such that at his death his debts and legal costs exceeded his credits by as much as £2657 15s. 2d.' The present item which casts light on Mackworth's later financial activities is 3pp folio. On watermarked laid paper. Undated. Aged and worn but complete and entirely legible. Folded three times into the customary packet with the otherwise-blank reverse of second leaf endorsed with the names in Latin of the parties in the suit and 'Draft. Partners Petition'.Addressed 'To the Rt. Honble The Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain' i.e. Thomas Parker 1st Earl of Macclesfield 1666-1732. The plaintiffs are Sir William Stuart Sir John Wallis and Robert Knapp; and the defendants Humphry Mackworth his son Herbert Mackworth and Thomas Mather. The petition is set out in the customary fashion. To begin with it 'Sheweth That your Petitioners. in the year 1720 became partners with the Plts & Defts. in an undertaking carryed sic on at Neath for making & manufacturing Copper Brass Lead and Iron pursuant to certain Articles of Agreemt. bearing date the 1st. day of May 1713 - and have advanced and payd in Several very considerable Summs to be Employed as Stock therein; and from ye nature of the undertaking wch was to carry on several manufactures wth one and the Same Joynt Stock and the profits they have been credibly informed have been made from each of the said Manufactures at other Workhouses not so not so conveniently situated as Your Petrs are at Neath Yr Petrs. expected & well hoped that they might have recd considerable Annual Dividends out of the Profits arising thereby and also out of the profits of their Mines at New Yorke'. The document proceeds to describe in detail the plaintiffs' case from non-payment of dividends to 'Differences arising between the Plts. Stuart Wallis & Knapp and Sr. Humphrey Mackworth in relation to the Direction of the Governmt. of the said undertaking'. A Chancery suit is described with the decision of the Lord Chancellor. 'Your Petrs are credibly informed That the sd Partners Works at Neath and New York have since the said Order been entirely under the Direction of the said Stuart Wallis Knapp and Officers appointed by them and that they have recd Considerable Quantitys of Goods from Neath and New York and several sums of Money arising by Sale thereof And that no Receiver hath been hitherto appointed to take any Acct. thereof nor any care taken that the sd. Goods have been Disposed of to the best Advantage or the Money arising thereby applyed in Discharge of the sd Partners Debts to their Workmen & others at Neath & Elsewhere'. The petitioners conclude that 'the Said Undertaking will be entirely ruined unless some Speedy Method is taken to prevent the same . And Your Petrs. Around 70 items laid down on 36pp. of an 8vo. exercise book with ruled grey-paper pages in quarter-binding with marbled boards with green cloth spine. With around eight more items loosely inserted. In good condition lightly aged and worn. The present collection consists of various handbills and other printed communications constitution and rules notices and forms issued by the Association together with numerous cuttings relating to it from provincial newspapers Western Daily Press Daily Bristol Times Clifton Chronicle Bristol Daily Post Bristol Times and Mirror Somerset Gazette Dorset County Chronicle Cheltenham Examiner with the cuttings dated in manuscript. Among the Association's own printed communications is a long 'Appeal to the Friends of Peace' dated from London August 1871 with others headed 'Progress of the Movement' 'Forms of Petition to the House of Commons in Favour of International Arbitration' 'Appeal for Petitions in Support of the Motion of Henry Richard Esq. M.P.' 'Petition to Parliament in Favour of International Arbitration'. The item is from the papers of one of the Association's honorary secretaries the Quaker pacifist Edmund Tolson Wedmore 1847-1920 and has a printed label on front cover carrying his ownership inscription in pencil: 'E. T. Wedmore 11 Oakland Rd Bristol'. Information regarding the International Arbitration Association is surprisingly hard to come by. It was closely associated with the Peace Society founded by the 'Apostle of Peace' Rev. Henry Richard MP 1812-1888 and as might be expected received a good deal of Quaker support. There were branches throughout the United Kingdom. The earliest reference to it in The Times is in 1875 and it seems to have ceased to operate under the name by the end of the century. The object of the Association was according to a printed card laid down on the front free endpaper 'To urge the adoption of a permanent system of International Law for the amicable settlement of International Disputes.' A fuller description of the Association's aims is given in the next item in the volume a notice 2pp. folio of a meeting held at the White Lion Hotel Bristol 16 January 1873 in the opening speech of the president William Terrell: 'All who attended that meeting he believed were in favour of International Arbitration – that was they were in favour of avoiding warfare to the utmost of their ability in favour of settling disputes by reason rather than by arms applause that they were in favour of avoiding the enormous expenses which nations were now put to from the immense armaments that they were obliged to maintain. Hear hear. What they wanted was to impress upon the Government the necessity of endeavouring to carry out the principles of Arbitration – to systematise International Arbitration and make it acceptable not only to the people of England but to the people of the whole world. They knew that International Arbitration so far as this country this country was concerned had probably saved us within the last year or two the loss of millions of treasure hear hear – and the higher loss of millions of human beings who might otherwise be a blessing to their families and homes. Applause. The principles of International Arbitration had been fully vindicated in the way in which the Arbitration between the United States and ourselves had been carried out.'
