A broadside issued for the court in Dumfries & Ayr in Scotland for the session held April 19 1819 and Ayr April 22. This broadside is held by the SLNSW. It is not located on OCLC Jisc LibHub or National Library of Scotland. OCLC: 181717771 cites a slightly later "Criminal trial" in Glasgow 27th of April 1819 held by the Univ of Glasgow and the SLNSW. The date is not printed but the date "on Friday the 28th May" is a Friday in 1819. The printing is also consistent with other similar broadsides we have handled.<br /> <br /> Dumfries: Henry McNish sentence 14 years; transported 29 Mar 1820 on the Mangles to NSW; John Brown and James Brown no transportation record near 1820; Samuel Ferguson and Mary Bunton housebreaking and theft - Sentence 14 years; he is transported July 1821 on the Lord Hungerford arriving in Tasmania in July 1821; no record for Bunton; Margaret Kerr theft imprisonment for 12 months; Peter Finlay & W. Donnel theft housebreaking hanged Ayr: John McNeil Joseph McNeil housebreaking theft - hanged.<br /> <br /> Three weavers were accused of 5 acts of highway robbery. Theyt were Arthur McCan alias M. Keand John Killan alias Kelly and John Stott. There was an Arthur McCann b. 1781 weaver "Irish rebel" departed 21 Jun 1822 arrived NSW 8 Nov 1822 on the ship Mangles. John Killan alias Kelly was apprehended the other two either escaped or were never caught pled not guilty but confessed to being with the other two and brought authorities to the place where event took place and where a watch was hidden. Witnesses could not identify Killan. Though pronounced guilty because of his youth and honesty he was recommended unanimously to be given mercy. "Lord Pitmilly. pronounced in a manner awfully impressive . the sentence. the prisoner to be executed at Dumfries on Wednesday the 26th of May. The prisoner who during the trial conducted himself with great propriety now fainted and was carried out of Court in that state." However it appears his sentence was commuted to 99 years departed 29 Mar 1820 on the ship Mangles arriving 7 Aug 1820. Thick folio a splendid copy with generous margins on large paper in a fine period binding of crimson straight-grained morocco all edges gilt sides panelled in gilt with greek key borders spine panelled in gilt with green leather label. <p><p>A magnificent copy of an officer's vade-mecum the who's who of the British army at a moment in time and as the entire list of British Army officers in 1807 the crucial bible for issues of promotion and preferment as well as location and secondment. This issue is of note for including a breakdown of the officers of the New South Wales Corps p. 311 serving under Colonel Francis Grose the roll call of familiar names beginning with Grose Paterson Foveaux and Johnstone spelled thus.</p> <p>Such publications were sometimes bound in magnificent style as here but do not often survive in this sort of perfect condition.</p> </p> . Contemporary red straight-grained morocco by HATCHARDS titled in gilt on the front cover with the gilt initials of Albert Edward below the device of the three feathers all edges gilt an excellent copy. The first page of text is titled DRAFT - the following text is printed in single column towards the outer margin surmounted by a crown and lists the process of the ceremonial and the order of precedence of the participants. This appears to be an advance copy for a member of the royal household. COPAC records a copy with an almost identical title Manchester University only. 28083Albumen print photograph 220 x 355 mm laid down on split card section of original album page titled Trial Bay in manuscript in negative bottom right; a superb print with rich tonal range and great clarity in fine condition very short edge tear bottom left. Rare early view of the settlement at Trial Bay on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales probably dating to around 1877 when work on the breakwater was commenced by prisoners from the purpose-built Trial Bay Gaol. The photographer of this unusually wide large format view was almost cerainly commissioned by the New South Wales Department of Works; indeed he could have been the New South Wales Government Photographer himself John Sharkie. According to the SLNSW the ""Government Printing Office original negative archive is held at State Archives & Records Authority of New South Wales as NRS 21689 Images Government Printing Office & NRS 4481 Glass Negatives. State Library NSW holds a low resolution copy image only."" Trove locates only one example of an albumen print of this significant image. That particular print forms part of an album held in the collection of the Blue Mountains Library whose cataloguing notes are salient: 'Trial Bay had been recognised as a safe shipping refuge from southerlies ever since its naming after the wreck of the Brig Trial in 1817. Between 1863 and 1866 some 90 ships and 243 lives were lost forcing the NSW Colonial government to act. In 1870 Parliament voted £10000 towards the construction of a breakwater to form a “harbour of safe refuge†at Trial Bay. The Trial Bay Gaol was established in 1876 as an experimental Public Works Gaol where the inmates would construct the breakwater. Although work started in 1877 it was not completed until 1886 due to difficulties in working the hard stone inconsistent funding and contractual problems. This i.e. the settlement in this photograph may be a settlement that predates the gaol although there is evidence of stone working in the right foreground. There is also a telegraph pole and wire on the slab building in the left foreground. The gaol ruins are situated on the headland well to the photo right. The photo date may be closer to the mid 1870s. The settlement appears strangely deserted. Format: albumen photoprint title from album page.' unknown

In July 1867 the first railway journey to the Blue Mountains traveled through to Weatherboard Station where the train terminated.
