Undated dated from the list of titles to the verso of the half-title the most recent title listed being 'The Madcap of the School' which was published in 1917.'A Patriotic Schoolgirl' is a heartwarming tale following Marjorie as she starts a new boarding school. Set during the war there is a spy plot at the school which Marjorie undertakes to unravel. An interesting tale providing a unique look at contemporary accounts for the First World War.Illustrated with a frontispiece and five plates.Collated complete.Written by Angela Brazil. Brazil was a popular writer of 'schoolgirl' novels intended for young girls. They were mostly set in boarding schools and lacked the moral instruction that most works for young women at that time had.Illustrated by Balliol Salmon who illustrated for 'The Graphic' as well as teaching art. He illustrated three more of Brazil's books 'The Jolliest Term on Record' 'A Popular Schoolgirl' and 'The Madcap Of The School'. In the original publisher's decorative cloth binding. Externally smart with some light rubbing to the boards and spine affecting the decorative spine and front board. Minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. Spine is discoloured. Small crack to the rear joint. Neat repair to the head and tail of the rear joint. Light marks to the boards and spine. A small amount of cockling of the cloth to the rear joint. Front hinge is starting but firm. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Internally generally firmly bound. Description: A Patriotic Schoolgirl begins just as Marjorie Anderson 15 and her sister Dona 13 are about to be sent off to boarding school. Marjorie is an energetic outgoing girl but one who is prone to acting impulsively. Dona is much shyer and reserved content to live in Marjorie's shadow has no interest in sports doesn't make friends easily and would much rather continue to be home schooled. After missing their connecting train to London making them 2 hours late they meet a kind soldier who helps them with their unwieldy belongings. Unluckily when they part at Euston Station and the teacher meeting them sees them speaking with a soldier Miss Norton takes an immediate dislike to both girls.
