Prima edizione in volume di un avventuroso resoconto, estremamente popolare in Francia all’epoca della sua pubblicazione: l’autore, durante un suo viaggio nell’interno dell’Argentina, viene catturato dagli indiani “puelche” che lo riducono in schiavitù per tre anni. Dopo una rocambolesca fuga riesce a tornare in Francia, dove avrebbe conosciuto Jules Verne che, colpito dalla storia di Guinnard, ne avrebbe fatto uno dei personaggi del suo “I figli del capitano Grant”. The author was reduced in esclavery by the “puelche” indians, during a travel in Argentina. After three years he could escape and, back to France, he met Jules Verne who, stroke by his story, made him a character in his novel “In Search of the Castaways” (1867-1868).

It is another of his collaborations with his finest illustrator Ralph Thompson; the two were brought together in 1954 by Rupert Hart-Davis, who had lured Durrell away from Faber after the success of his first book 'The Overloaded Ark' three years before. The partnership was an extraordinarily fruitful one, lasting a full decade and resulting in Durrell's most attractive books, including, of course, 'My Family and other Animals'. SIGNED COPIES OF DURRELL'S EARLIER WORKS ARE VERY SCARCE.

Tela editoriale con sovraccoperta illustrata (sciupata), cm 17x24, pp 235 (5), veduta fotografica in nero del Sarmiento ripiegata all’antiporta, 4 carte geografiche a colori ripiegate e numerose tavole fotografiche a colori e in nero su carta patinata. Esemplare da studio: internamente completo e ben conservato, completo e privo di annotazioni o difetti su testo e tavole, ma con sovraccoperta molto usurata (strappi, mende in nastro adesivo) e segni d’uso sui piatti. Edizione originale e unica (in italiano, nel 1959 apparve per lo stesso editore quella in spagnolo) dell’ultimo libro del cantore della Terra del Fuoco, Alberto Maria de Agostini. Alpinista ed esploratore, Padre De Agostini tentò senza successo la salita al Sarmiento nel 1913; nel 1956, a 73 anni, il salesiano fu alla guida della spedizione che vide Carlo Mauri e Clemente Maffei raggiungere l’inviolata vetta. L’impresa è qui narrata con abbondanza di fotografie e 4 cartine dei rilievi topografici effettuati dalla spedizione. “Il racconto dell’impresa alpinistica, sotto forma di diario, approfondisce gli aspetti tecnici e organizzativi della spedizione, ed è arricchito da numerose osservazioni geografiche sulla conformazione della Terra del Fuoco e della sua cordigliera e da descrizioni naturalistiche di questa terra affascinante e sconosciuta. Completano l’opera numerosi aneddoti e informazioni sulle popolazioni locali, sulla presenza di immigrati italiani a Ushuaia e sui centri abitati di quest’ultima e di Porvenir.” (Chevallay Granero, p. 69). ill. Dove "vive" una scuola? Quali segnali ci indicano la capacità di ospitare, costruire pensiero, renderlo poetico e politico, in una comunità fatta di differenze, incontri e casualità? È possibile abitare l'incertezza, far tesoro dell'imprevisto, esporsi, vivere in una corrente fluida d'idee in cui ogni situazione trovi la propria soluzione, singolare e creativa, distinta per ciascun/a bambino/a, per ciascuna famiglia e comunità? "Segnali di vita" dà conto di varie esperienze realizzate dal gruppo di lavoro di una scuola della Provincia di Chubut, nella Patagonia argentina. Una sorta di laboratorio in cui le regole della scuola, i saperi accreditati, l'inerzia delle routine si confrontano insistentemente con nuovi sguardi in grado di generare trasformazioni libere e amorose. Il libro ci presenta personaggi vivi, scene che sfidano ciò che è contenuto nella cassetta del possibile dal punto di vista scolastico, storie che oltrepassano i limiti del curriculum, dell'integrazione e del rispetto per la diversità intesi come prescrizioni. E postulano tra i propri fini la felicità e il pensiero. Un libro rivolto a chi si occupa quotidianamente della crescita educativa e culturale di bambine e bambini in situazioni complesse, in un mondo di differenze.
