The result is that the only copy of many of the photographs of the early days of railroading in Canada have been preserved in his collection. This book illustrates over 100 of these photos and records the history of many of the events which make up the history of railroading in Canada. 1971131j0597Toronto: University of Toronto Press. Good dust jacket only. 1971. First Edition. Hardcover. 0802017347 . "In the 1840's Paul Kane travelled the far reaches of the North American West from the Great Lakes along the fur-trade routes to the coast sketching a visual record of the Indian cultures of that vast area. With the publication of this study of his life and career Paul Kane emerges as a major figure among North American artists of the nineteenth century. Hundreds of his sketches are here examined together for the first time. The 48 colour plates and 204 black-and-white illustrations reveal Paul Kane's frontier as a region of endless fascination. This work offers first an account based on many new sources of the artist's life and career before and after his western travels. Then follows the 1859 text in full of 'Wanderings of an Artist' which gives Kane's own narrative of his adventures. The catalogue raisonne contains over eight hundred entries and is arranged according to the geographical areas of the subjects. Appendices present unpublished catalogues and letters relating to Kane's travels. Overall this work offers an absorbing history of the North American west and its native peoples." - dust jacket. xviii 350 pp. Bibliography. Index.
