"An event whose importance and significance extended beyond the confines of Canada a sacrament which was more than an act of homage to the War Dead which indeed was a demonstration and an appeal for a cessation to those quarrelings afflicting the human family the unveiling of the Canadian War Memorial on Vimy Ridge on July 26th 1936 was an international ceremony from which were derived elements that are bound to exercise a beneficent influence on the course of Empire as the years pass. It witnessed the establishment of several precedents enactment for the first time of roles which in the past had been accepted as pleasant theories but which had not hitherto been practised.
