In 1972 a survey was conducted to assess the historic architecture of the town of Pictou. Entire 19th century neighborhoods have been preserved. 140 buildings were researched and 55 drawn for publication.

The book begins with an historic review of Judeo-Christian thought and practice regarding divorce with special focus on how men and women have been perceived and how these perceptions, rooted in religious philosophy, have expanded to determine their legal rights and obligations to one another. In addition to the wealth of theoretical and historical issues discussed in the book, the author provides a lengthy review of consequences of divorce including the shifts in socioeconomic conditions of divorces. Special attention is drawn to the resilience of children to cope with events and the potential strength they may gather from involvement with their parents in mastering this taxing life experience. The author's discussion of the feeling of empowerment which divorce sometimes engenders is especially compelling.
