"I believe the way to tell farm history, and in the process the history of this country, is in the words of those who cleared and tended the land or who, at least, were in attendance as witnesses to farm life. In the past several years, I have been collecting hundreds of excerpts from eighteenth and nineteenth-century writings that in any way touch on Canadian agriculture. The scope of this book is pre-1900 and all of Canada... This book is for the land lover, layman or otherwise, and not for the agricultural scientist, statistician, footnoting historian or economist." - the author. With some black and white illustrations. 208 pages including footnotes and black and white photographs. Backbreaking work for slave wages in labour camps - that was the government's response to thousands of young men looking for jobs in the Dirty Thirties. This historical account tells the little-known story of the jobless who drifted across the country during the Depression and were drawn into the work camps - offered poor food, mass shelter, and a few pennies a day in exchange for doney work on major government projects. Records the desperation, disillusionment, and rebellion of these welfare inmates, and the repressive shameful way in which the politicians and government authorities tried to keep the situation under control.
