1793W1578Dublin Ireland: P. Wogan P. Byrne J. Moore and W. Jones 1793. Frontispiece vi 2 303 pages. The first printing of the Dublin edition preceded in the same year only by the 2-volume first London edition--both preceding the first U. S. edition published in 1794. The Dublin edition is significant not only for its apparent scarcity but also for the frontispiece an unusual mezzotint portrait of a younger Benjamin Franklin that appears in no other edition and has seldom if ever been reproduced. The clean and tight book has been sympathetically rebacked retaining the original red leather title patch. All edges of the textblock were stained a pale green perhaps when the rebacking was done--the staining intrudes 1/16" onto the top and bottom margins of the frontispiece.Very light and faint foxing throughout; occasional smudges in the margins. Two large but light waterstains to the frontispiece but only minor and relatively unobtrusive intrusion into the image. Missing the front free endpaper. The book's condition is much nicer than it sounds; certainly an acceptable copy for the serious collector. First Dublin Edition. Hardcover. Collectible-Very Good. Small 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" Tall. 21688On February 15 1898 a mysterious explosion destroyed the battleship USS Maine while it was anchored in Havana Harbor killing 260 men and helping to propel the United States into war with Spain. Although the cause of the explosion was unclear American newspapers were quick to allege that the ship had been brought down by a Spanish bomb. Led by William Randolph Hearst in the New York Journal and Joseph Pulitzer in the New York World the press demanded action. Hearst's headline "Remember the Maine!" became a rallying cry that helped turn American public opinion strongly in favor of war with Spain. By April President McKinley had given into to additional pressure from hawkish senators and his own vice-president Theodore Roosevelt and war was declared. Although brief the Spanish-American War had important consequences. It ended Spain's colonial empire in the Western Hemisphere and secured the position of the United States as a Pacific power. "U.S. victory in the war produced a peace treaty that compelled the Spanish to relinquish claims on Cuba and to cede sovereignty over Guam Puerto Rico and the Philippines to the United States. The United States also annexed the independent state of Hawaii during the conflict. Thus the war enabled the United States to establish its predominance in the Caribbean region and to pursue its strategic and economic interests in Asia" Office of the Historian U.S. State Department.

This collection consists of approximately 120 items including original photographs printed and real photo postcards stereoviews commemorative programs patriotic covers postal stamps calling cards song sheets lithographs and other ephemera showing the Maine as she appeared before the disaster the wreckage and salvage efforts the funeral service and burials of the victims first at Cristobal Colon Cemetery in Havana later at Arlington National Cemetery and some of the myriad ways in which the Maine was memorialized and mythologized in American popular culture. Original photographs and real photo postcards capture the ship and crew prior to the disaster crowds of sailors lined up to pay their respects to the victims the coffins being transported the cemetery dotted with freshly dug graves elaborate floral wreaths and memorials and salvage efforts in the immediate aftermath of the disaster and in 1911 when the ship was raised before being towed out to sea to its final resting place at the bottom of the ocean. The wide reach of the patriotic feelings aroused by the disaster can be seen in two cabinet cards of young children wearing U.S.S. Maine hats as well as on items that have no military or national connection e.g. a high school commencement program a blotter advertising corsets yet bear images of the Maine or the "Remember the Maine" slogan. On envelopes and stationery we see images of Uncle Sam punching a Spainiard an eagle dubbed "the New Bird in Havana Harbor" and troops walking toward a ship under the heading "On to Cuba." A mendicant uses the Maine as his theme on a card handed out to solicit alms; a song by a writer of sensational crime broadsides is reported to have been "composed and written during the indecision of the U.S. Government" and urges "Let's show all foreign powers Aye the haughty sons of Spain they will brook no insult like the Sinking of the Maine." A particularly unusual item is an envelope illustrated with an image of the remains of the ship captioned "WHO DID IT" containing illustrated sheets of tissue with instructions to blow them up via a small "fuse" on the back. In all an illuminating collection that helps demonstrate the impact of both the incident and how it captured the popular imagination -- such that many Americans still recognize the "Remeber the Maine!" rallying cry today even if they no longer know what it represents. unknown books

The Subcommittee will be holding its tenth hearing examining the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and the temporary provisions that are to expire. They're set to expire in 2007 unless we reauthorize by Congress which I think most of us anticipate will occur. The Subcommittee examined each of the expiring provisions in great detail. This afternoon we examine the evidence of continued discrimination against racial and language minority citizens since 1982 that have been compiled by a number of non-governmental organizations who will be testifying. I'd thank these organizations for the time and effort that they have put into completing these reports and in making sure that this Committee and Congress has before it a complete and accurate record of discrimination over the last 25 years. In continuing to reauthorize the temporary provisions Congress on four separate occasions examined the extent to which discrimination continued to exist by analyzing information such as enforcement statistics minority voter registration rates minority voter turnout and litigation pursued to protect minority voting rights. Federal agencies such as the United States Commission on Civil Rights were instrumental in investigating analyzing and reporting back to Congress on the state of minority voting during each consideration. Each time Congress concluded based upon the evidence presented that the exceptional conditions which existed in 1966 continued to exist in 1970 1975 1982 and in 1992 when it was last reauthorized. This afternoon the Committee continues to examine whether the exceptional conditions warranting the extension of the temporary provisions continue to exist in 2006. U. S. Moses Austin's report on the lead mines in Missouri is one of the earliest selections in Becker's fourth edition of Wagner-Camp's Plains & Rockies: no. 2d ! -- Our copy was owned by Congressman Samuel W. Dana 1760-1830 who was almost certainly in attendance when Jefferson read THIS State of the Union Address "to Both Houses of the Congress." Dana's annotations appear on the first seven pages of the text.

Moses Austin's report on mining in Missouri appears as the third item in the present volume. Howes calls it the "First United States' book on Missouri" even though it was never separately issued. The bespoke report is likely the first publication concerning mining west of the Mississippi River. It certainly precedes Henry R. Schoolcraft's 1819 "A View of the Lead Mines of Missouri" sometimes considered the first book on the subject of Western mines. Austin reported to Jefferson that area he was then mining would be a choice acquisition for the United States. Austin utilized ingenious mining techniques of his own creation and became extremely successful. However in the end he had to declare bankruptcy a setback which caused him to turn to Texas for a land grant. Thus in one of the odd twists of history a failed mining venture in Missouri eventually led to the Republic and State of Texas a cause that was of course championed successfully by his son: Stephen F. Austin.

The other two documents in Jefferson's State of the Union message are of interest: the first expresses Spain's abandonment of opposition to the Louisiana Purchase -- a welcome development. The second is a proclamation by the President establishing a Customs District and Port of Entry at Mobile Alabama on the Gulf Coast. Other topics include the organization of the Louisiana Territory and measures taken against the Barbary pirates. Jefferson also reports that he is hoping to deal peacefully and productively with the area's Native Americans a policy that would be abandoned later in the century by other presidents.

PROVENANCE: Samuel W.
