In some copies the plates and maps are separately bound. Here they are in a single volume. "The illustrations of fossil remains were particularly fine for that period" see DAB. Owen 1807-1860 the third son of the social philanthropist Robert Owen came to America from Scotland in 1827 and took up residence in New Harmony Indiana where his father had undertaken to plant a socialistic community. Illustrated with portrait frontispiece complete with tissue guard. The last ten pages comprise a narrartive genealogy of the Fairfax and Cary families. Includes a brief account of Jackson's celebrated Valley campaign. Howes lists this title but reports it as 'Robert' Fairfax not Randolph. He also notes the the only two extant early editions 1864 and 1878 are recorded as second and third ediitions respectively surmising that the first printing was most probably in periodical form. A very clean square unmarked copy. No previous ownership marks. Cloth clean and interior fresh no foxing toning or writing. A very attractive well preserved copy of this detailed two-part map of Philadelphia and vicinity published in 1894 copyright 1893. Tough-to-find in collectible condition as nice as this. A bright clean copy. NO chips. NO tears. NO creases. NO owner's name or bookplate. Clean and unmarked. Drawn on a scale of 1 inch to the mile. The map consists of two parts. The eastern half unfolds to 23" wide by 27" tall. The western part is 21.5" wide by 27" tall. Both are skillfully and attractively hand colored. The maps are backed in linen as issued. They are housed in the publisher's original green cloth portfolio which is printed in black and embossed in gold on the front cover and in blind on the rear.
