Homes warns that St. Paul is no place to live: "I shall not give them much encouragement if they come here and must come on their own responsibilities. I know Jonas would not like it here and would soon get homesick and as it costs considerable to get here. I don't wish to be responsible for the uncertainty of their liking the country. I would not stay here were it not for making money. This country has many failings which are great detriments to it. Timber is very scarce and in some parts the soil is not good. A large portion of the land about this place is land that won't wear long. I think the best portion of this country is on Lake Superior. Some from this place are moving there now. February 23 unknown

1897010616Chicago: Illinois Central Railroad Company 1897. Handwritten. Very Good. No Binding. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 87 pages 22 manuscript 61 typed and 4 telegrams. Almost all individual correspondences signed. This collection of correspondence documents the late-nineteenth-century planning and negotiation necessary in constructing an Illinois Central Railroad Company ICRR branch line connecting Dyersburg Tennessee to the Stevens Lumber Company track at the Obion River. This project envisioned during a period of rapid railroad expansion displays the economic importance of regional development via railroads at the turn of the twentieth century. The planning of this line would ultimately contribute to the formation of the Chicago Memphis & Gulf Railroad Company in the early 20th century. This collection likely assembled and retained by David Sloan acting Chief Engineer of the ICRR includes engineering reports drafts of contracts cost estimates invoices telegrams and letters exchanged amongst railroad officials predominantly regarding the Dyersburg to Obion River switch. Main themes include route selection flood risk right-of-way acquisition grading costs and the financial feasibility of constructing thirteen miles of track through flood-prone terrain described here as being "overflowed every year." They also note the need for a wide right of way and extensive elevation measurements due to seasonal flooding along the Mississippi floodplain. The correspondence also illustrates the web of permissions agreements and financial commitments required to advance a railroad project even when constructing just thirteen miles of track. Because Stevens Lumber Company and the citizens of Dyersburg were primary financial backers their interests also heavily influenced decisions. There were also discussions about a line connecting a southern alignment along the Chester tract to the Stevens Lumber Co. track a line from Dyersburg to the "Joe Stinger place on the old channel of the Mississippi River" and a line from the Obion River to Carruthersville and Tiptonville. This project eventually evolved into a line extending from Dyersburg to Tiptonville first independently organized as the Dyersburg Northern Railroad Company and later renamed the Chicago Memphis & Gulf Railroad Company. Deaccsessioned though it's hard to imagine why from the New England Historic and Genealogical Society with related markings. Wrappers chipped at the edges and partial detached at spine. Binding sound and text clean. An excellent source of local historical and genealogical information for Framingham Massachusetts and vicinity this pamphlet provides the names of more than 500 land owners listed by Ward along with a short description of the person's real estate holdings e.g. "Barn 17 acres mowing and pasture 2 acres peat meadow 14 acres deer swamp" or "Buildings Homestead 22 acres Meadow 4 acres Clay Pit lot 7 1/2 acres" followed by a valuation for each element of the real estate as well as for their total "personal estate" if any. Statistical tables at end provide demographic details numbers of people involved in various occupations and interesting information about the numbers and types of buildings mills factories shops barns etc. land acres of tillage land divided by crop livestock and equipment for the textile industry looms spindles carding machines in Framingham. 1876004112Philadelphia: Pomeroy Whitman and Company 1876. Very Good . 1 double-leaf print from the 1876 Atlas of York County Pa. Signed "Ray Del." Contains an aerial view of the ironworks with inset illustrations showing sections of the house front department and the machine shop as well as several close-ups of machinery. Also shows a steam locomotive on the train tracks running in front of the ironworks. The ironworks was located on W. North Street in York. The company was founded in 1840 by Elisha Geiger and Samuel Bechtol; other partners during the 19th century included Alexander Small Edward G. Smyser and Smyser's sons. "E.G. Smyser" appears over the central door in the print with "Variety Iron Works" above that. In 1877 it opened an office in Baltimore where much of the ornamental ironwork was sold. The company also produced iron castings for J.W. Fiske Co. in New York City beginning in 1869. The company continued to operate until 1941. As of 2013 the central building was being used by the York Academy Revinoal Charter School. In Very Good Condition: slight staining along edges not impacting the image; solid and otherwise clean.
