183524120Cincinnati OH: Published by H.S. Barnum Stereotyped and Printed by J.A. James 1835. Hardcover. Good. Bound volume containing 32 issues of Western People's Magazine a bi-weekly illustrated periodical published in Cincinnati beginning on March 1 1834. Some issues bear the addition imprint of Sandford and Pope Alexandria Louisiana. Most issues are 8 pages a few are 6 and each measures about 10.75 x 6.25 inches. The 32 issues are bound chronologically but four issues from the time period covered March 1 1834-February 7 1835 are lacking Two leaves are missing large sections and one issue is missing nearly all of the final leaf. The binding contemporary marbled paper boards with leather spine is heavily worn and the front board is nearly detached. The pages are tanned but generally clean with mild to moderate scattered foxing and some marginal tears. The first pages of two issues have sizeable ink stains. Little seems to be known about the magazine's publisher H.S. Barnum although he published several books some in partnership with an H.L. Barnum. Neither appears to be connected to P.T. Barnum. The content is an eclectic mix covering topics described as specific to a western audience e.g articles on "Western Life" and "Western Forests"; descriptions of natural wonders; Indian lore; natural history; mining and manufacturing; American and world history; tourist destinations; science; and more. . 191321854Oregon City OR: Grant B. Dimick 1913. Softcover. Very good. 9" x 12" pp. 171-194 stapled binding. Light soiling old dampstain to back cover but still very good. Single issue of this scarce magazine which billed itself as the "only journal on the Pacific Coast published in the interests of stock men" and "devoted exclusively to to livestock modern dairying methods and good breeding." It was founded in 1912 by Judge Grant B. Dimick a lawyer and Clackamas County Court judge who was then a well-known and highly respected citizen a condition that was not to last. He was a bank president head of the Willamette Valley & Southern Railroad and a five-term Mayor of Oregon City among other accomplishments. His agricultural bona fides came from his ownership of a 530-acre farm where he raised cattle sheep and pigs. The Journal offered practical advice and news for farmers as well as a healthy dose of Oregon and Pacific coast boosterism. It was published only until 1915 when it was purchased by and merged with the Western Farmer. Dimick went on to defraud as many as 500 people -- railroad men clerks storekeepers laborers widows and farmers -- in a Madoff-worthy scheme in which he sold fake mortgages securing clients by paying a higher-than-average interest rate and doing a disappearing act with a suitcase full of cash when his deception was uncovered. Presumably a Republican attack on the then-gubernatorial candidate a Pennsylvania Supreme Court justice. ".the creed which Judge Woodward's party has adopted is servile unpatriotic and disorganizing. the Judge's position in regard to the great issues now before the country is faithless inconsistent and wholly delusive." The writer then critiques Woodward's famed 1860 speech criticizing "The Falseness of its Statements in regard to the Abolition of Slavery by the North" "Judge Woodward's Bible Views of Slavery" and "The Right of Secession as Claimed by Judge Woodward." Woodward critic of course does not let him forget his infamous statement that "We must reassert the rights of the slave-holder." Not in Sabin. Interesting and unusual. N.p. paperback

20336Vintage photograph 2¼" X 3¼" tipped to heavy stock white-bordered beige bevel-edged 4" X 5" card n.p. 1900 July 15. Very good. Handsome image of this obelisk monument commemorating the 21st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry's contribution at the Battle of Chickamauga signed boldly by photographer Tillinghast in ink in the margin at lower right. On the verso he pens bold and large: "Monument of / 21st Wis. Infantry. / Chickamauga. / paraph / Taken on the battle / field by A.R. Tillinghast / July 15 1900." Whether Tillinghast was a professional or simply a talented amateur we have not been able to ascertain but this warrants further research. Quite handsome and unusual. unknown

Anderson sold meat to the US Army which came from a meatpacker named Samuel Wilson. The meat was stamped EAUS Elbert Anderson United States. Klett's name is at the top of the list of signers and laid in is a Club postcard addressed to Klett dated 10/20/64 with details of the upcoming Club luncheon. Very Good in quarter cloth over decorative paper covered boards one of 1000 unnumbered copies printed scattered light toning light rubbing at edges. A UNIQUE copy in the annals of the Dutch Treat Club yearbooks one can almost see Klett moving about the hall seeking out his fellow illustrators for their signatures. Privately Printed Hardcover

Lacks frontis portrait end papers. Covers show considerable edge wear corners worn through to boards fraying top and bottom of spine. Gilt still readable on spine. Famed Lincoln sculptor Avard Fairbanks created this superb full-length figure and speechifying from all the expected North Dakota and other politicos is present. Tipped to front pastedown is a Typed Letter Signed from Mark Andrews born 1926 a freshly-minted North Dakota congressman 1963-81 and future U.S. Senator 1981-87. 1p 8½" X 11" Washington DC 29 April 1964. Addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Dan O'Day. Near fine. On "Congress of the United States" letterhead Andrews thanks these constituents for "your deep interest in the History of North Dakota" and transmits this book noting: "Although each state is permitted to place two statues in Statuary Hall this is the first to represent North Dakota. This was accomplished through the hard work of many North Dakotans and is a tribute to our state." Signed simply "Mark" in blue ink. An outstanding copy. Government Printing Office hardcover

No. 73 of 125 copies on white laid Buckeye Text paper in Intertype Baskerville and Regal type for private distribution. x 34pp; 8vo; brown cloth lettered in pink. Nice frontispiece "We Fought Bears with Bulls" reproduced from a linoleum block cut by Louie Romiti. The beginning of the Nugget Press was in 1939 with its first publication a translation from the German of Heinrich Lienhard's "I Knew Sutter." This the third publication of the press continues the tradition of having some student group write print bind and copyright at least one book each year. The result is this beautifully produced little volume with both the original Spanish and facing English. According to the forward Enrique Cerruti was employed by H. H. 188232544Richmond VA: W. A. Mountcastle 1882. Lithograph. Ca. 9" X 8". Very good. Well-known lithograph of the notorious Confederate prison in Richmond second in infamy only to Georgia's Andersonville Prison. A clean and handsome example of this famous image of this prison with six large tents in the middle ground. One soldier stands sentry in the foreground another stands with arm in a sling and a handful of others military and civilian mill about near the tents and along the large brick structure; interestingly three male civilians stand as a group in the foreground one of them clutching the hand of a young girl clearly posing for the photograph upon which this lithograph has been based. A front corner of the building still retains its original large "Libby & Son / Ship Chandlers & Grocers" sign. An attractive and highly detailed image. Housed in a modern ca. 1970s single cream matte and a simple ½" wooden frame with non-glare glass overall dimensions 12" X 11½". A simple but suitable presentation. W. A. Mountcastle unknown
