The American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missionswas founded in 1810 with the aim of spreading Christianity worldwide and grew to be the largest and most important missionary organization in the United States. Although Congregationalist in origin the organization also included missionaries from Presbyterian and Dutch and German Reformed churches. It sent missionaries to far-flung locations around the world including India Ceylon China Singapore Siam the Sandwich Islands/Hawaii and other Pacific Islands and many locations in the Middle East and Africa. Men and women were also sent to minister to the native peoples of North America including the Choctaws Cherokees Dakotas Ojibwas Senecas Tuscaroras and Abenaquis. The reports of these missionaries as published in The Missionary Herald offer highly valuable primary source material on the history of the regions and peoples they visited. 195023479New York: Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company 1950. Softcover. Good. 14" x 10.25" 40 pp in stapled illustrated wrappers. Moderate general wear from handling wrappers detached from text block; good. An interesting extensively illustrated promotional piece for the tobacco industry as a whole and for Chesterfield cigarettes in particular. "Tobaccoland" is described as an area extending "from the top of Chesapeake Bay well down into Florida and westward into Missouri" where "the finest cigarette tobaccos" have been produced and refined over generations and "no farmer is prouder of his self-reliance and independence." "The world's finest cigarette paper" is also made in Tobaccoland from flax grown in Minnesota and the southwest. After an overview of Chesterfields' "vast modern plant" in Durham North Carolina the text leads the reader on a tour of "a home which tobacco has built" which showcases "tobacco as a business and a way of life." We see happy farming families plowing the fields planting seedlings harvesting and curing the crop enjoying community life and even attending the County Fair where they can spend their newly earned tobacco money and also learn about new farm machinery and equipment. We also learn how tobacco is stored in Chesterfields' vast warehouses and processed and turned into cigarettes in bright modern factories. The text concludes with a dedication "to the millions who smoke the cigarette that satisfies" and a promise that "constant quality test and advanced research.are your guarantee that Chesterfields will always be.the best cigarette for you to smoke. 186533225New York: Kimmel & Forster 1865. Lithograph. Approximately 21" X 26. Very good. Lightly evenly age toned; blank margins either trimmed or edgeworn for the cream mat goes to the image edge at the top and sides while the bottom includes the full title line mat opening 23" X 18¼". First edition. Magnificent allegorical lithograph issued by the famed New York print publisher who also produced a companion piece entitled "The End of the Rebellion in the United States 1865." A large figure of Columbia stands at center atop a huge splitting rock looking to the viewer's right and clutching a waving flag in her right hand; meanwhile her other hand wags a pointing finger toward the viewer's left side. At her feet lie a whip and open shackles representing the abolition of slavery. To the viewer's right stands Abraham Lincoln and indeed the entire right side represents the Republican cause. A stern General Winfield Scott stand behind Lincoln and a crowd of young men strain forward some offering up bags of gold some bearing arms all willing to join the cause; a woman in the foreground covers her eyes and is comforted by two children. The background on this side is horizon of mountains and a glorious sunrise. On Columbia's other side stands the figure of Justice without her usual blindfold raising up her scales in one hand and sword in the other glaring angrily toward all those at the left side of this hectic scene. James Buchanan's sleeps blissfully at the edge of the split rock while next to him crouches his secretary of war John B. Floyd -- who was charged with corruption -- eagerly scooping up gold coins into a large sack. Further back Jefferson Davis clutching a ripped U.S. flag and Alexander H. Stephens stand beside a palm tree with a huge snake coiling up its length and spitting at the scales of justice. An angry cluster of soldiers swirls around them. The background on this side is grim and muted with battle scenes. A superb handsome example of this famous Civil War allegorical print. Kimmel & Forster unknown
