Very good. 5-3/4 x 9" sewn printed wraps pp. 72 wraps foxed and lightly soiled spine with loss to the head and tail with lesser chipping along its length but the binding sound and text clean A most-thoroughgoing census of all 150 members of the class of 1855 including dropouts five months in the making as per the Editor's "Valedictory" statement. The preliminary pages give in copious detail descriptions of various meetings and reunions which have taken place in the years all four of them since graduation and then lists every member of the class along with "Where Are They Now" biographical tidbits that make my mother's Christmas letters look tame. These are followed by various cross-indices by place of birth date of birth "the aggregate age of the Class at graduation was 1978 years" time of entrance profession etc. Then are listed those who "left without graduating" in decreasing order of years of attainment poor William Ross Degarmo "Entered from Fort Miller N.J. Oct. 18 1851; left Dec. 24 1851 and has not since been heard from". A labor of love truly by one committed to the cause. Wheeler would not alas be much longer with us as was no doubt true of many of his classmates -- he was killed fighting for the Union side in 1864. His devotion lived on however: After the war his mother published a memorial volume entitled "Letters of William Wheeler of the Class of 1855 Y.C." Houghton 1875. Conquest Cross Black with a note possibly written in Black's hand in ink on front pastedown and reading thus: J. C. C. Black H of R 53 Congress. From his old commander Gen Jos Wheeler. Note: This does not appear to be inscribed/signed by Wheeler as the handwriting differs markedly from Wheeler's. A very worn copy in green cloth with bowed covers hinges cracked but still holding though just barely spotting significant tears and wrinkles at upper spine. Some pages corner-creased. A resident of Augusta Georgia Black born in Stamping Ground Kentucky in 1842; died in Augusta in 1928 served as a Confederate soldier in the 9th Kentucky Cavalry in Georgia Tennessee and Kentucky. He was also a lawyer state legislator and US representative. General Wheeler born in Augusta Georgia attended West Point becoming one of the youngest Confederate generals at age 26. 18930073221893. Very Good -. 1 typed letter dated Oct. 3 1893 from Joseph Wheeler on stationery of the Committee of the Territories House of Representatives to J. W. Morgan of Florence Alabama. Joseph Wheeler 1836-1906 represented Alabama in Congress 1881-1883 and 1885-1899. He graduated from West Point in 1859 and jointed the Confederate Army in 1861 serving with the Army Corps of Cavalry of the Western Arm and becoming lieutenant general in 1865. Known as "Fighting Joe" he also served in the Spanish-American War and the Philippine-American War. J. W. Morgan was the first superintendent of the public schools in Florence Alabama in 1890. A recent graduate of A. & M. College in Auburn he was teaching Latin and English literature at the state normal school in Florence when he died suddenly on Sept. 17 1894. In this letter Wheeler is responding to a request for assistance from Morgan. In Very Good- Condition: closed 2-cm. tear from upper edge; chip out of one side without loss of text; lightly creased and soiled. unknown

Timothy Abbott Conrad 1803-1877 was an American Geologist who also studied paleontology especially shells of the Tertiary and Cretaceous formations. Although from New Jersey he was one of the New York State geologists and traveled throughout the Southeast. Although the focus of this book is on his work in Alabama four text sketch maps show his travels through North Carolina South Carolina and Georgia.
