In December 1829 the church Deacons voted to thank Reverend Choules and request a copy for press of the sermon preached on Thanksgiving day. Discernible fold at center covers stained interior foxed. 1969005739Washington D.C.: Senator Richard S. Schweiker 1969. An archive of three SIGNED typed letters from Schweiker to W. Carl Jackson one dated 1969 two dated 1970 when Jackson was Director of Libraries at Penn State University. All three letters Fine folded twice stamped Received at bottom. Two of the letters are in regard to S.1519 a bill to establish a national commission on libraries and information science and the third S.3824 the Postal Service Bill which had to do with eliminating preferential mailing rates for books educational materials library rates and religious non-profits. Richard S. Schweiker was a Pennsylvania GOP US Senator from 1969-81 and the Secretary of Health and Human Services 1981-83 under President Reagan. When Reagan challenged President Ford for the Republican Party nomination in 1976 before the opening of the GOP Convention Reagan promised to name Schweiker who had a moderate-to-liberal Senate voting record as his candidate for Vice President to balance the ticket. But Ford won the nomination largely thanks to Reagan's risky move for Schweiker. When Reagan did finally become President Schweiker was his choice for Secretary of Health and Human Services. Schweiker was also a pioneer in increasing government spending on diabetes research through his authoring and sponsoring legislation passed in 1974 to create the National Commission on Diabetes. Matthew Cooke was in the business of manufacturing fruit boxes in the 1870s when California's apple crop was devastated by Codlin moths. He began studying entomology to find defense against the moths and ensure the security of his business and quickly became an expert on a range of pests affecting California's fruit crops. He was appointed Chief Executive Horticultural Officer of California in 1881. This report prepared at the request of the State Board of Horticultural Commissioners describes the life cycles of the major insects damaging fruit crops moths scale insects mites caterpillars borers aphids etc. and recommends remedies for dealing with each. 190220871Philadelphia: George W. Jacobs 1902. First Edition. 7.5 x 5 in. 97 pp with three illustrations from photographs in original pictorial cloth. Light scuffing to corners and spine ends pale stain to frontis not affecting illustration previous owners' names on front endpapers. Very good. In 1902 the United States depended on anthracite or "hard coal" for domestic heating. Anthracite coal miners in Pennsylvania went on strike on May 12 demanding higher wages a shorter workday and recognition of their union the United Mine Workers of America. As the strike dragged on over several months public anxiety about fuel shortages led President Roosevelt to take the unprecedented action of stepping in to bring about a resolution. On October 3 1902 he met with presidents of the mine-owning railroads and union leaders. The owners refused to enter into negotiations with the union and the conference disbanded without resolving the crisis. Roosevelt then formed a commission to investigate the strike. Secretary of War Elihu Root and banker J. P. Morgan convinced railroad leaders to abide by the findings of the presidentially appointed commission. The union also accepted the commission and on October 20 voted to end the strike. In March 1903 the anthracite-coal commission recommended increasing miners' pay by ten percent one half of their demand and reducing the working day from ten to nine hours. Stewart Culin was a private in the Second Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry which was sent in August 1902 to maintain peace and order in Carbon County where the strike was centered. He later became an important ethnographer and his considered narrative and analysis of the strike reflects the eye of a keen observer. George W. Jacobs hardcover books

A RARE publication in its own right Rare Book Hub notes last copy appearing in a dealer catalog in 1970. This copy rendered unique and historically significant by the original owner's addition of 78 blank pages which he mostly filled with pasted in contemporaneous newspaper clippings including 7 pp. of the Democratic Party Platform of 1856. Other significant clippings are headed: The Sanford Letter Wash. Aug. 21 1848 2 pp.; Kansas Affairs-Official Instructions to Gov. Geary and Gen. Smith Wash. Sept.3 1856; Kansas Slave Code 4 pp.; Who Are the Disunionists ; 4th of July Toasts in South Carolina: The White Man Shall Be a Slave If a Laborer: Slaves Horses and other Cattle a Sale by J.B. Sproull & Co. 1855; and The Buchanan Democracy Hate Freedom. Overall approximately 40 newspaper clippings pasted in with some marginal writings and notations in ink in the handwriting of the original owner who although unnamed appears to have resided in Greene Co. OH and was most definitely a Republican ! Very Good bound in sewn brown leather 78 blank pp. with contemporary newspaper articles pasted onto most of the blank pages; the Republican Party Platform 36 pp.; Declaration and Constitution 32 PP. Hays signed in ink Holiday Greetings 1920-1921 Number 213. The purpose is to reduce the 'High Cost of Laughing' ." John R. Johnston was a prominent glass manufacturer and also prominent in national Republican politics which explains the Hays connection. Will H. Hays managed Warren G. Hardings successful campaign for the Presidency of the U.S. and was subsequently appointed Postmaster General. After a year in that position he resigned to become most famously known as the first President of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America MPPDA which under his guidance published a blacklist of actors and workers studios should not hire inserted moral clauses into actors' contracts and published an informal list of suggested guidelines for film producers.
