Brown was a longtime newspaperman at the Indianapolis News rising through the ranks from city editor to become general manager and vice-president. He was President Emeritus of the Board of Directors of Butler University whose Hilton U. Brown Theatre bears his name. 1916004215Indianapolis Indiana: Abe Martin Publishing Co. 1916. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR on title page - "To Will Hays from his friend Kin Hubbard 1916". Will Hays managed Warren G. Hardings successful campaign for the Presidency of the U.S. and was subsequently appointed Postmaster General. After a year in that position he resigned to become most famously known as the first President of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America MPPDA which under his guidance published a blacklist of actors and workers studios should not hire inserted moral clauses into actors' contracts and published an informal list of suggested guidelines for film producers. Frank McKinney "Kin" Hubbard was the creator of the cartoon "Abe Martin of Brown County" which ran in U.S. newspapers from 1904 until his death in 1930 and was the originator of many political quips that remain in use. North American humorist Will Rogers reportedly declared Kin to be "America's greatest humorist". Hubbard worked for The Indianapolis News and Hays was also a native Hoosier. A truly delightful bit of Indiana history and a wonderful Association Copy. No date but the author's inscription verifies it at 1916 which is the date also given by WorldCat. With tissue guards for all but 3 of the etchings all of the etchings are Fine No Date circa 1933-1942. On heavy laid paper the sheets ranging in size from 8 1/2" x 9 3/4" to 10" x 12 1/2". Each etching with small "Lilly Library" stamp verso at corner the whole set housed in a plain manila envelope marked "Dups.". The Seventh Congress was the first during which Thomas Jefferson was President. Printed here are the acts admitting the state of Ohio with alterations of laws governing the Northwest and Southwest Territories as well as other session laws Importantly this volume contains a series of important treaties. The "Convention Between the French Republic and the United States of America" pp. i-xxiii with both French and English texts ratified in 1801 settled all the commercial and military disputes that had brought the two countries to the brink of war in the 1790s and paved the way for the Louisiana Purchase. Next appears the newly ratified version of part of Jay's Treaty also settling claims over commercial issues. Finally there are printings of treaties made by President Jefferson with the Chickasaw Creek Choctaw and Seneca Indian tribes. OCLC records only four institutional copies all in Virginia.
