1969005739Washington D.C.: Senator Richard S. Schweiker 1969. Typewritten. Fine. One PageFolded. SIGNED BY AUTHOR. 8" x 10 1/2". An archive of three SIGNED typed letters from Schweiker to W. Carl Jackson one dated 1969 two dated 1970 when Jackson was Director of Libraries at Penn State University. All three letters Fine folded twice stamped Received at bottom. Two of the letters are in regard to S.1519 a bill to establish a national commission on libraries and information science and the third S.3824 the Postal Service Bill which had to do with eliminating preferential mailing rates for books educational materials library rates and religious non-profits. Richard S. Schweiker was a Pennsylvania GOP US Senator from 1969-81 and the Secretary of Health and Human Services 1981-83 under President Reagan. When Reagan challenged President Ford for the Republican Party nomination in 1976 before the opening of the GOP Convention Reagan promised to name Schweiker who had a moderate-to-liberal Senate voting record as his candidate for Vice President to balance the ticket. But Ford won the nomination largely thanks to Reagan's risky move for Schweiker. When Reagan did finally become President Schweiker was his choice for Secretary of Health and Human Services. Schweiker was also a pioneer in increasing government spending on diabetes research through his authoring and sponsoring legislation passed in 1974 to create the National Commission on Diabetes. He was also a frequent performer there in the late 80s and early 90s. Small hardcover first edition with the name/address on front endpaper of Minnie Neal Barnes presumably a previous owner. Heavy wear to black-lettered gray cloth covers including bumped corners edgewear and edge nicks fraying and small tears at head and foot of spine. Front hinge severely cracked but holding just barely with heavy notes in pencil and ink and glued-on newspaper clippings on related Neal family matters covering both front and rear endpapers. Rear endpapers have small holes minor; text unaffected and some pages are creased. Text underlined here and there with spotting on some pages. Frontis portraits of author and his wife are creased and foxed black-and-white photo between pages 56 and 57 of Neal with Civil War relics including Confederate flag; last page is small b&w photo of old Neal homeplace. 135 pages. 1938TB33789n.p.: Sponsored by The State of South Dakota 1938. First Edition. Fine in black cloth covered boards with gilt text on the spine. An octavo measuring 8 1/8 by 5 1/4 inches. This may be a more recently bound copy. There is no indication of who bound it or when Missing its original dust jacket. The first edition of this guide is one of the most scarce in the collection. Only 2500 copies of the first edition were printed. 441 pages with index sectional maps to the state bibliography and text. Illustrated with eight sections of black and white photographs. There is no pocket at the rear of the book and the map therein is missing. Jeff Dykes in his American Guide Series Catalog and Check list states: "One of the rarest of the entire series." And Howes rates this title as "quite scarce". Previous experience with this title by this dealer reveals that another copy had a laid-in letter from the Superintendent of Public Instruction dated April 4 1942 stating that the state legislature of 1939 abolished the South Dakota Guide Commission and "distributed all unsold copies of the South Dakota Guide to the schools and public libraries of this state." The letter went on to state that the only copies of the book available for "commercial distribution since the enactment of this law were those in the hands of private distributing firms. We know of no place where a copy of this book can be secured at this time." Clearly a strong indicator of why this title remains so elusive in its first edition.
