A tight and nice first edition of this farewell speech by this 4-term Whig congressman 1841-49 politician writer and historian 1795-1881. Penned on February 20th two weeks before his departure from the congressional seat he lost to Republican Charles Allen Hudson here summarizes and defends his congressional career in detail especially his antislavery stance -- and while he calls his successor "a representative of acknowledged ability" and his tone isn't distinctly sour grapes he does find his defeat "under circumstances somewhat peculiar" alarming -- "I have been charged with basely deserting my principles; with wantonly betraying the interests of the State; and with wickedly sacrificing the cause of freedom at the shrine of slavery. the cry of cowardice and pro-slavery desertion and treachery has been reiterated from day to day." Almost but not quite rates a "Very good" -- just a mild bit of edgewear and couple of tiny chips at extremities. Many of Douglas' Illinois colleagues -- Isaac Arnold and Orville H. Browning among them -- contribute to this collection of eulogies. First edition -- a tight and handsome copy bearing a nice autograph addition: The top of the front wrapper bear a bold signature and inscription: "Clinton D. Sellew / from Thos. A. Doyle." Doyle 1827-86 was long-time mayor of Providence Rhode Island from 1852 off and on through his death. Sellew whose pencilled ownership signature appears on the title page was a local public official and later postmaster of Providence. Light wear and a little soiling to the binding. The inside of the front cover has a mostly removed bookplate. A sturdy copy. The text is a little toned but is clean. The bulk of the pamphlet pages 3-17 is an article by R. F. Beasley entitled "The Battle of Elizabethtown." This battle took place on Aug. 27 1781 in Bladen County NC. Elizabethtown was halfway between Wilmington and Cross Keys now known as Fayetteville. About 60-70 Patriots squared off against 300-400 Loyalists and British soldiers to break their hold in the Cape Fear region. They relied on cunning the the cover of darkness to fake out scatter the British forces. Housed in a removable plastic sleeve with a board backing. Scarce. The music began at 9:00 the German Cotillion was at 12:00 and the balls ended at 3:00. The Dancing Assembly of Philadelphia also known as "The Assemblies" was established in the winter of 1748-49. Remaining an annual tradition into the 21st century the Assembly Ball is the oldest continuously operating subscription dance in the United States. To attend one either had to be a subscriber a person invited who pays a fee to attend or be sponsored by a subscriber. After the Civil War the Assemblies were held at the Academy of Music until 1904 when it moved to the Bellevue Stratford Hotel. Langhorne Wesley Wister 1834-1891 was the son of William Wister and Sarah Logan Fisher Wister and served as a Brev. Brig. Gen. in the Civil War. No year is given; 1872 1877 and 1883 are the years in which the calendar corresponds to the dates given between the end of the Civil War and Wister's death.
