First edition thus of this delightful pictorial map/brochure celebrating the Summer racing season at the beautiful Del Mar Turf Club horse track as World War II drew to a close. Found in 1937 by many Hollywood stars in partnership but headed by Bing Crosby & Pat O’Brien who were ardent horse racing enthusiasts and drew tremendous attention to the racetrack considered one of the best in the country. The 1938 Seabiscuit and Ligaroti match race had raised tremendous awareness and interest in the racetrack and was largely closed and repurposed for use as a B-17 tail assembly plant however this brochure touts their return in 1945. Relief is shown by hachures and spot heights.<br />  <br /> The 16 ½†x 30 ¼†map is printed in blue and folds into printed red cardstock wrappers 4†x 6 ½â€. A few small ink smudges to the map. 18495043Paris: Typ. Schneider Rue d'Erfurth 1 1849. Very good. Broadside approximately 18 x 13 inches. Matted and framed. A pair of short closed tears repaired at lower edge. Even toning and light creasing. Contemporary manuscript annotation under caption title. A wonderful illustrated faux news broadside published in Paris as gold fever coursed through Europe in 1849. The headline promises "nouveaux détails" of the gold mines in California but the text is in fact a humorous description and light-hearted admonishment of the multitudes thoughtlessly giving up their livelihoods for the hardscrabble life of a gold digger in the California wilderness. The first section runs through a litany of types who are abandoning their lives for adventure and advises them not to consider the difficulties of the journey:<br /> <br /> "En route pour les mines d'or de la Californie! Partez! Il n'est pas néccessaire que vous preniez de lourds baggages : une cassette et une bonne pioche vous suffriont. Ne vous laissez pas décourager par la peur d'une navigation de cinq mois. elle sera peut-être périlleuse. mais le résultat est si consolant : de l'or!. toujours de l'or!. Qu'importent la colique et les fièvres doublées d'un mal de mer brutal. de l'or!. toujours de l'or!. Qu'importe d'être noir ou jaune en mourant du moment qu'on se repose dans un linceul d'or pour l'éternité! Partez!"<br /> <br /> The remainder of the text somewhat sardonically describes life in California and warns prospective travelers not long for the comforts of home but rather to concentrate on their sought-after riches:<br /> <br /> "Par example ne vous attendez pas à jouir de toutes les douceurs de la vie. Vous n'y trouverez ni biftecks au beurre d'anchois ni dinde truffées; car les aliments y sont rares. Mais les racines y sont en grande abondance. Vous vivrez un peu à la manière des anachorètes pour un temps. seulement vous déterrerez de l'or. ce qu'ils ne faisaient pas que l'on sache."<br /> <br /> The illustration which occupies approximately the top third of the broadside depicts men and women from all walks of life carrying pickaxes on their shoulders and racing for a ship about to depart. The image carries the printed signature of "B. Netter;" a contemporary manuscript note under the caption identifies the publication date as February 17 1849. The Bibliothèque Nationale de France estimates that as many as 40000 French men and women made their way to California between 1848 and 1856. The present broadside is an excellent document of California gold fever in France and the pervasive interest in gold rush news in Europe during the mid-19th century. This effective archive of 41 original photographs by Bronstein b. 1949 encompass a series of 34 images he began in the late 1980’s documenting the industrial arteries of Los Angeles Long Beach and San Pedro California transforming through black and white the visual contrast shadow and grit of areas seldom captured. Depicted are grain silos stark against the sun above the railyard; Southern Pacific oil cars with graffiti and rust; the vast Western Paper Mills Supplies Inc. recycling center established in 1983; refinery & cement factory tanks reflected in polluted pools of water; along with night and day shots of the vast railroad switching yards in Los Angeles. A few photos capture the Sunlaw Partners cogeneration power site in Los Angeles who were a pioneer in providing clean safe and efficient power from their plant; and mounds of oil tank floats piled alongside the tanks. Also included are photos of the Vincent Thomas Bridge crossing Los Angeles harbor in San Pedro CA; fishing boats in harbor and Long Beach CA railyards. A neat promotional map of early-1920s Los Angeles distributed by the Security Trust & Savings Bank. The reverse of the map carries a detailed street index as well as lists of hotels railroad offices and other significant municipal and commercial buildings. The map itself delineates Los Angeles from Hollywood and Highland Park in the north to Huntington Park in the south. Attached is a volvelle indicator which can be used to locate streets on the map in conjunction with the index. A second map oriented along the left edge of the sheet shows the major rails and roads of greater Los Angeles from Santa Monica and San Pedro to San Bernardino and Riverside. Fred S. 76914Small archive of material associated with the McNerny Products Corporation an early San Francisco manufacturer of automotive brakes. The grouping includes a typed letter signed seven photographs and a promotional pamphlet.<br /> <br /> McNerny was an early producer of a four-wheel brake system. The earliest cars used simple "spoon" brakes a type of lever system that moved a block of wood against the wheels. This was effective at slower speeds; however by the late 1890s the Michelin brothers had introduced rubber pneumatic tires which were damaged by wood blocks. As a result mechanical drum breaks grew in popularity but there were several notable drawbacks to these external brakes such as a tendency to give way on hills or in inclement weather. At the 1924 New York Auto Show the Duesenberg and Rickenbacker car companies offered cars with a four-wheel brake system for the first time.<br /> <br /> This material shows that McNerny was among the early proponents of four-wheel brakes. The folding brochure features drawings of a Ford and a Chevrolet retrofitted with McNerny brakes. There is also a diagram showing how the brakes work with a notation "U.S. & foreign patents pending" dated January 1924. "In driving a car with McNerny 4-wheel brakes you may surrender yourself completely to the exhilaration and enjoyment of the journey without a disturbing doubt or slightest anxiety as you KNOW that you are thoroughly prepared for any situation and just what you can confidently expect and DEPEND upon from your brakes in any EMERGENCY which may arise."<br /> <br /> The archive includes a typed letter signed by "Clyde" who appears to be associated with the company. He asks Helen Shulty his cousin in Iowa for the make and model of her car. In addition there are seven 4 1/4" x 2 1/2" black-and-white photographs which show what appears to be traveling salesmen on the road with McNerny products. The photos are backed with black paper as if clipped from an album. A unique collection of material related to the early automotive industry. unknown
1950List3113Los Angeles and Santa Barbara California and others: McLain’s Photo Service Bona Fide Photo Service et al. 1950. Eleven individual photographs with one duplicate measuring 8 x 10 inches. Slightly curled with wrinkling and some folds and tears; overall very good plus. Eleven photographs showing NAACP activities in and around Los Angeles in the early 1950s. Most are uncaptioned; the one captioned photograph shows the organizers of a 1952 NAACP rally organized in collaboration with the AFL CIO and American Jewish Committee protesting the murder of Florida Civil Rights activists Harry and Harriet Moore. The couple were killed in their home likely by the Klan though no arrests were made and the case was closed in 2011.<br /> <br /> Other photographs include a mixed race group standing outside of the Carillo Auditorium likely in Santa Barbara holding folders with “Win With Stevenson†stickers on them which was the campaign slogan for Democratic presidential nominee Adlai Stevenson. Stevenson ran for president in 1952 and 1956 losing both times to Eisenhower. In another photo a group stands around a desk holding papers that read “The NAACP Condemns So-Called ‘Right to Work’ Laws†likely concerning 1958 California Proposition 18 a right to work ballot measure. In a photo likely from the early 1950s a young man holds a flyer reading “UAW-CIO OUTLAWS DISCRIMINATION†concerning the adoption of International Constitution Article 25 which created the organization’s Fair Practices and Anti-Discrimination Department.<br /> <br /> Other photographs that are more difficult to identify include a group holding a large key a man being presented with a shovel likely for a groundbreaking ceremony a young man standing at a church lectern and a group of men standing with clothing and canned goods probably for a charity drive.<br /> <br /> Of interest to historians of NAACP activities in California during the early Civil Rights era. 77435Campaign materials for the U.S. Presidential run of John George Schmitz 1930-2001 the ultra right-wing California Congressman whose career ended when it was revealed he had an extra-marital affair and fathered two children with one of his former college students. Schmitz also held the dubious distinction of being the father of teacher Mary Kay Letourneau 1962-2020 convicted in 1997 of child sexual abuse for having an affair with her sixth-grade student whom she later married.<br /> <br /> Schmitz was notable for his extreme right-wing sympathies and for his slurs against African Americans Asian Americans Latinos women Jewish people and the LGBTQ plus community. He was a leader of the John Birch Society which ultimately expelled him for extremist rhetoric. In 1972 he was the candidate for President of the United States of the American Independent Party later known as the American Party.<br /> <br /> His political career began in 1964 when he was elected as a Republican to the California State Senate; he was reelected in 1966. He was then elected to the United States Congress in 1970 representing Newport Beach's 35th District for a single term. After losing his congressional reelection bid in the June 1972 primary Schmitz was nominated to run for President by the American Independent Party. Although unsuccessful he and running mate Tom Anderson received more than one million votes.<br /> <br /> This collection includes six broadsides promoting Schmitz's 1972 presidential campaign. Five are 8 ½" x 14" and one is 10" x 14". One poster complains of the lack of news coverage of his candidacy: "What is the news media afraid of Why don't they want to hear what he has to say" In another Schmitz compared himself to George Wallace and bashed his opponent Richard Nixon's policies: "Your vote for Nixon has brought you busing 25% increase in the national debt 23% increase in major crimes continued war in Viet Nam decline in military morale and preparedness."<br /> <br /> After losing Schmitz returned to the Republican Party and ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1976. He served again in the California State Senate from 1978 to 1982 but lost a reelection bid after admitting to an affair and fathering two children whom he never helped raise or support. unknown

Each mounted on heavy cardboard backing approximately 5 ½ x 8 ½ inches which is mounted on heavy cardboard of approximately 8 x 10 ½ inches. Unknown if photographs are stamped verso due to mounting. Some with recent captions on the largest mount; some captions likely incorrect see description. Fine contrast overall fine condition. Raper James Waters 1856–1937 was a professional photographer from Sacramento California. He was first active as a photographer in Gold Hill Nevada in the 1880s. Following this he returned to California and had studios in Berkeley and San Francisco between the late 1880s and mid-1920s. Offered here is a collection of fifteen of Waters’ photographs from around Mount Shasta likely from the late 1880s or 1890s.<br /> <br /> The photographs are mainly from places in Siskiyou County where Mount Shasta is located including shots of the towns of Sisson now Mount Shasta and Dunsmuir Sisson and Dunsmuir are on the Siskiyou Trail an ancient Native American footpath running from the San Francisco area to Portland Oregon. The Central Pacific Railroad Company completed a train line along the Siskiyou Trail in 1887; one shot from an unknown location shows railroad tracks rounding a curve among felled trees. Just outside of Dunsmuir is the Shasta Springs resort mislabeled here as Shasta Bottling Works famous for its springwater – the fountains of water in the photograph are from pressurized pipes coming from the springs.<br /> <br /> Other captioned photographs show Castle Crags hikers summiting Mount Shasta Mossbrae Falls and Castle Lake mislabeled as Crystal Lake. Photographs also show campers with their tent small houses a canoe on a lake and snowy winter scenes. Overall a striking set of photographs. unknown

The new restaurant served as the press reception location for the reopening of “New Chinatown†in 1939 and through World War II was a very popular reasonably priced eatery and night club for the Wartime military personnel. The translation was executed by Emma Ayer 1845-1932 whose husband Edward E. Ayer 1841-1927 was noted bibliophile and collector whose 50000 piece library were absorbed into the Newberry Library. 19054170N.p. possibly Fresno 1905. Very good. Broadside 13 x 5 inches. A few small nicks to edges minor even toning old horizontal folds. Lecture location stamp added in bottom margin reading "Southport Monday Eve. Aug 28th K.P. Hall." An apparently unrecorded broadside advertising a magic lantern presentation aimed at promoting land in Fresno and King counties "for sale in ten acre tracts or larger at from $25 to $35 per acre including perpetual water right. Yearly water rental 62 1/2 cents per acre -- the cheapest water in California. If you are thinking of moving you should not miss this lecture. If you are satisfied to stay where you are come anyhow and see the pictures and learn something about California." The Golden State was the site of not one but two Rancho Laguna de Tache land grants. One was granted by the Mexican governor Pio Pico in 1846 to Manuel Castro and included land along the north bank of Kings River for over twenty miles. The other Rancho Laguna de Tache was claimed to have been given to Joseph Yves Limantour by the Mexican governor Manuel Micheltorena in 1843. The latter grant which was along the south bank of Kings River was not honored by the Land Commission after the cession of California to the United States. The broadside then most likely relates to the sale of Castro's 48000-plus acre Rancho Laguna de Tache tract north of the Kings River. Castro sold his land grant to Jeremiah Clark in 1866. Clark's wife Charlotte had her husband declared mentally incompetent and eventually was allowed to sell the land to Charles A. Laton and Llewellyn A. Nares the namesakes of the present-day towns of Laton and Lanare.<br /> <br /> The location of the lecture was a Knights of Pythias Hall in Southport though the exact location of Southport is unclear. From the text of the broadside it is not out of the realm of possibility that the developers of the Laguna de Tache Grant tract were marketing their efforts outside California. We could locate no other copies of this informative broadside. However a map at the California Historical Society of the Laguna de Tache Grant showing a portion subdivided into lots surveyed and platted by order of Nares and Saunders managers that was drawn in 1904 by H.L. Ward of Laton California helps place the present broadside in its proper context. The involvement of Nares in subdividing the Laguna de Tache tract in 1904 jibes with our proposed date for the broadside as August 28 was a Monday in 1905. unknown

The 24-page original typescript includes 16 tipped-in original black-and-white photographs two elevation charts and a map.<br /> <br /> Arnold was hired by Jack Leland to study reports and maps of the Mecca Hills Anticline and conduct a field inspection providing his opinion of the oil and gas possibilities of the rock formations. On page three of the report underlined in red is his comment: “This structure is ideal for oil and gas accumulation.†He further states: “from the evidence it is clear that oil exists in the general area of the north end of the Imperial Valley.â€<br /> <br /> The Mecca Hills Anticline is now in a protected reserve. Established in 1994 the U.S. Bureau of Land Management manages the 26356-acre Mecca Hills Wilderness. The area includes narrow steep-walled canyons that create a natural maze within the badlands. Uniquely faulted and folded geologic formations are the result of activity on the local sections of the San Andreas Fault making the Mecca Hills one of the more unusual geological sites of this kind. Located in Riverside County Mecca is a desert community on the north shore of the Salton Sea in the Eastern Coachella Valley and is surrounded by agricultural land with a population of approximately 8000 residents.<br /> <br /> Bound with brads in black leatherette wrappers.
