Many family members are present but its notable that the vacation photos feature women playing on the beach buried in the sand climbing on rock and standing atop the Rocky Mountains. Very good. <br /> <br /> Uncommon single issue of this periodical on irrigation mining and development in the western states. Published in Denver "the center and metropolis of the so-called 'Arid Region' and the most beautiful and prosperous city in America" according to the publisher. Articles on the fruit trade in California water reports from the dry land states of Colorado Idaho Montana Arizona New Mexico Wyoming Utah California Washington and Kansas and others. <br /> <br /> By this time westerners were realizing the irrigation needed to further develop the land would require a large amount of capital and started lobbying congress for aid. This and other publications were meant to inform the public on such efforts and further the cause. In 1894 Congress passed the Carey Act which was a federal land grant for the Western States to which irrigation project requirements were attached. Includes two small diaries from 1901 and 1917 with sporadic entries a large photo album measuring 14 x 11 with appx. 400 small photographs from 1906-1909 attached to album pages most measuring 3 x 2 as well as a few larger format images laid in. With 100 plus pages of typed pages including retained correspondence story ideas and various other manuscripts. With eleven maps produced for his “Of Men and Maps†series including five copies of a large map entitled “Whither Russia†in varied states and in large sizes up to 30 by 36 inches and a handful of small ephemeral pieces. Generally near fine condition with the exception of the album which is missing its rear board and has some pages loose and torn. Very Good. J.M. de Beaufort a war correspondent for the London Daily Telegraph and New York American during World War I recounted his wartime adventures in the 1917 book "Behind the German Veil: A Record of a Journalistic War Pilgrimage." Originally arriving in Chicago in 1909 he married a steel magnate's daughter and pursued a career in show business. However by 1912 he had gone through a divorce and transitioned to newspaper work earning the moniker of the "Dude Reporter." Originally born in the Netherlands as Jacques Albert Uilenbroek he was thought to be a deserter. He spent the latter part of his life in the United States apparently jailed in San Francisco for a stint in the 1920s and eventually settled in Los Angeles. <br /> Offered here is an interesting smattering of material from the life of the mysterious De Beaufort which bookends his most unusual career and life with a large visual photographic record of his life in Europe as a young man and over a hundred pages of manuscript material from late in his life with a highlight being several maps in draft form for an apparently unpublished project called “Of Men and Maps.†As a group the material shows the work of an ex-con artist and war correspondent trying to regain his form while living in Los Angeles. He was still writing as a “Special Correspondent†at this point though the title seems to have been fully honorary. Also included are two small pocket journals with sporadic notations from his life in Europe in 1900 and in 1917. In its entirety the group gives an interesting visual and manuscript record of a literary fraudulent and imaginative transatlantic life and intellect. <br /> The cartographic highlight of the group is several iterations of a large map called “Whither Russia†in varied forms which show an interesting interpretation of the sphere of influence of the USSR and its growth from 1939 to 1946. Also included are two drafts of a map of Operation Market-Garden in the Netherlands in 1944 an unidentifed tactical map of a military battlefield a map called “Middle East Jackpot†showing the division of territory between the Allied and Axis powers a map called “Dawn’s Early Light some reproduced small format maps from the De Beaufort’s and a small map called “Gifts from Yalta.†De Beaufort was working on these maps for a column called “Of Men Maps and Memories†that was published in the East Los Angeles Tribune. He also sent the columns out in newsletter form from his address at 1635 N. Ogden Drive in Los Angeles. <br /> The collection of manuscripts drafts and retained correspondence tackle a range of subjects perhaps most interestingly those detailing De Beaufort’s creative process - drafts of stories lists of ideas for stories and letters. His over the top style is on display in a lot of the writings some of which are of unknown origin and purpose. The documents contain correspondence between De Beaufort and Edwin Pauley the oil man and presidential advisor. In one untitled essay he asks himself the question “What has been your most thrilling experience†and his reply is “ Silly questions. Who or at least what newspaperman of some 25 turbulent years standing - and falling - could answer such a question. A reporter’s life has a thousand thrills. There was that rainy day in Marcy 1915 in the fortress of Loetzen when I stood face to face with Hindenburg. Hm yes that was quite a thrill…†De Beaufort was entrenched in the Los Angeles journalistic scene at this point and the documents show the degree to which he relied on his former glories to attempt various career revitalizations endeavors. <br /> The album of photographs from 1906-1909 over 400 in total give a visual record of the young Uilenbroek’s life in Europe. The star of the collection is his bulldog Bob who travels throughout Europe with him and eventually comes to America by 1907. Mary who we presume to be his future wife is featured heavily in the images. It is unclear whether he was working at this point the images show affluent young people and their dog in varied cities and are purely of a personal nature. Other photographs laid in are relics from his war correspondent period. The loose photographs and ephemera are a mix of portraits from different periods from his life including two pictures of Sydney Turing Barlow Lawson one signed by his widow. The journals are sporadically filled and hard to decipher though one legible passage says “drinking all day.â€<br /> Overall the group gives evidence of this intriguing life and is the only extant group of material relating to Beaufort to our knowledge with the exception of a single journal from his time in Belgium during WWI that was sold at Bonhams and is still available in the trade as of this writing. unknown
1971List2884Pasadena California 1971. Approximately 22 x 28 inch painting on heavy cardstock with 7 x 9 inch photograph affixed. Some spotting on a portion of the lower left; overall excellent. Locksley Hall was a Spokane-based psychedelic rock group formed in 1967 who nearly had a record deal with Epic in 1969. The project was scrapped and was not rediscovered until 1996 when it was finally released by Indianapolis-based Or Records. This hand-painted poster advertises the band playing for “one night only†at the Pasadena Che House—likely a house venue as the name suggests—in June of 1971 and notes that the band had previously played with Phil Ochs “Eric Burden sic & War†and others. A charming piece of independent music history. unknown
1986List2877Oakland California 1986. 18 x 25 inch poster on heavy cardstock. Fine. Poster for Run-DMC’S Raising Hell Tour featuring Whodini LL Cool J and R&B group Timex Social Club. Run-DMC were touring on their third studio album Raising Hell which went triple platinum. Later tour dates including New York City Pittsburgh and Long Beach were disrupted by alleged gang violence causing Run-DMC to cancel at least one date. Nonetheless the album and tour are variously credited with kicking off the so-called golden age of hip-hop and cementing the genre in popular culture making the careers of LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys who did not play at this particular date and reviving the career of Aerosmith. unknown

Public Enemy was touring on Fear of a Black Planet which would go on to be recognized as one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. A well-designed piece advertising a stacked lineup. unknown

18976345Ventura Ca: Free Press Book and Job Office 1897. Good. 11620pp. Original printed cloth wrappers. Moderate wear and soiling to wraps rear wrapper detached. Scattered manuscript notes throughout plus manuscript additions to rear blanks. Even toning and scattered staining other signs of use. Extremely scarce late 19th-century community cook book published in Ventura California in 1897. Several hundred recipes are attributed to members of the local Ladies' Aid Society and advertisements for local businesses are scattered throughout. One chapter prints a handful of "Spanish Recipes" which include Havana Soup Pastel de Pescado Spanish Liver and Spanish Jerked Chicken. Other colorful recipes are Italian Herring Salad Mrs. Saxby's Chicken Salad Van Deusen's Gold Load Eureka Sponge Cake and Apple Pie Without Apples. The present copy contains additional manuscript recipes and notes on the preponderance of the twenty rear blank pages dated 1917 to 1923. They contain instruction for items such as Rosa's Wonderful Coffee Cake and Mrs. Nance's Biscuit but also comprise four pages of manuscript notes on the packing and preserving of local fruits including apricots strawberries and currants. Well used but a unique copy with numerous manuscript additions and also extremely scarce. We locate copies at Berkeley and Yale only. Free Press Book and Job Office unknown

Very good. 6150pp. Original wooden boards decoratively illustrated and lettered in green gray and black paint on the front board reading "Recipes Irvington P.T.A." and bound by three separate rings. Text uniformly toned with several leaves detached but present a few with minor chipping. An exceedingly rare DIY cookbook produced by the Irvington Parent-Teachers Association just before the outbreak of World War II. The recipes were compiled by Irma T. Bond "not for culinary instruction as is the case for most cook books - but for the purpose of permitting members to exchange their favorite recipes." The contents page lists the recipes in roughly alphabetical order beginning with Appetizers Bread Crepe Suzette and Cakes and ending with Salads Soups Vegetables and then "How to Cook a Husband" "Household Hints" and "Quantity Cooking." Each of the recipes generally presented two per page includes the name of its contributor. OCLC records just a single copy of this ephemeral pre-war school-related cook book at UCLA. May unknown

Slightly creased; ragged at bottom edge; Very Good. Undated but we find George Fraser listed as a Constable in Pinole in the California Roster of State County and Municipal Employees for 1917. The suspect Charles Miller is identified as a German-born immigrant "poses as a Horse Doctor.speaks broken German also speaks French. is a booze fighter." The issuing sheriff R.R. A wanted poster offering $20 for the return of a stolen Indian motorcycle. Indian motorcycles were an early American motorcycle built by the Hendee Manufacturing Company in Springfield Massachusetts. This particular one was a tandem model stolen from a race ground in San Jose in August of 1913. Motorcycling was then a very new sport with the first motorcycling club the Federation of American Motorcyclists having been formed in New York City not ten years prior. unknown

An uncommon survival possibly published by the Santa Clara County Sherriff’s Office showing two wanted criminals from 1911 who were travelling together. The first a C.K. Paullins was the editor of the Rocky Mountain Moose and is wanted for embezzlement. The second a Ruby J. Stanley alias Lillian Raymond is known as “Kentucky.†According to the flyer “This woman is very well known in the tenderloin of Los Angeles and Fresno. She dresses in the latest style and wears fancy dresses… These people work all kinds of schemes to make money. I wish you would keep a sharp lookout for these parties… W.J. The prints show mild surface wear but are clean and retain excellent contrast; moderate soiling to mounts; Near Fine. One mount printed with the photographer's address 110 Congo Street San Francisco at lower right; one image captioned in the negative "Croatian Club Banquet / Feb 11 - 1922 / P.P. Tornich photo" with photographer's embossed stamp at lower left; third image unsigned but clearly from the same or a similar event and in a mount of similar style and date. <br /> <br /> Three excellent portraits documenting a meeting of the San Francisco branch of the Hrvatski Sokol a Croatian nationalist membership organization founded in Prague in 1862. The Sokol was modeled on the German turnverein emphasizing gymnastics and physical culture while promoting nationalist sentiment and military preparedness. In the United States the sokols persisted as a means for Croatian immigrants to retain their national identity against the intense pressures of assimilation they faced in their adopted homeland. <br /> <br /> The photographs - all group portraits - depict banquet attendees in various costumes ranging from conventional business attire to traditional hunting outfits including feathered caps. In one photograph the group's banner is prominently displayed hanging over a long banquet table the traditional Croatian hawk surrounded by the words "Hrvatski Sokol / San Francisco Cal." <br /> <br /> Of the photographer P.P. Tornich we can discover little regarding his professional activities. The Bancroft Library records one holding for an album of Tornich photographs dated 1933 published by the Portola View Company of the first convention of the Slavonic Alliance of California; we find no other institutional records of work by this artist. However Tornich appears to have been a prominent figure in Slavic-American circles in San Francisco serving for at least fifteen years as an officer of the Slavonic Illyric Mutual Benevolent Society for at least three of which he was the Society's President based on advertisements in the San Francisco Call 1897-1912. unknown
1855List1713California 1855. Quarter plate ambrotype measuring 3 ¼ x 4 ¼ inches with Vance’s embossed identification to mat housed in a black thermoplastic case. Case split at both hinges image fine. Very Good. Robert Vance was one of the first photographers to document California’s gold rush taking over three hundred images of California that were shown in 1851 in New York and since lost. He operated a studio in San Francisco at Sacramento and Montgomery Street. This image of an unidentified subject in formal dress was likely taken in 1855-1856 when Vance began taking ambrotype portraits. unknown

First edition of this well-written and nicely illustrated cook book for bakers pastry and confectionery chefs in Southern California during the Roaring 20’s. Included are sections on puff pastries German Coffee Cakes dumplings tarts and elaborate fancy deserts with over 100 pages of cake and pastry designs for the pastry and candy shop. Included as well are recipes for everything from Mexican Sausage to Suckling Pig and applesauce as well as Green Turtle Soup and Horseradish Butter. Vandegeer 1867-1928 worked in hotels as baker and pastry chef in leading hotels of France Belgium and the Netherlands before finishing his career in Southern California near San Diego and eventual retirement by 1924. The constitution and bylaws of the Germania Club of San Francisco a social and welfare association for German Americans in the area. Founded in 1873 and incorporated in 1875 the club provided aid to sick members and burial services for the dead in addition to organizing social events promoting German American culture and forming choirs "for the advancement of vocal music".Not located in OCLC. 18982144San Francisco: Cal. Demokrat Publishing Co. 1898. Fair. 21-1/2 x 17-1/4 inches. 8pp. Tabloid format newspaper printed in seven columns per page. Occasional b&w illustrations. Text in German. In fair condition only with significant soiling and large light stains somewhat affecting readability; numerous small holes to first two leaves most pinhole-sized or slightly bigger a few as large as pea-sized all sporadically affecting text; several short tears to edges and last leaf; old folds. A scarce issue of this influential German-language daily which ran from 1852-1918. The front page devotes considerable space to coverage of the looming Spanish-American War which is here termed "unvermeidlich" inevitable. The increasingly ominous preparations of the two countries since the sinking of the USS Maine are described at length as well as England and various European countries beginning to choose sides. Also included in this issue is content about Japan's imperial ambitions in China viewed here as in a positive light given the potential for spreading Christianity to China news about the Klondike Gold Rush various events occuring on the Pacific Coast and more as well as advertisements in both English and German.Not located in OCLC although several institutions hold other issues of this paper and its earlier iteration the California Chronik. Oblong folio. 13.75 x 10.25 in. 28 pp unpaginated. nearly all thick black card stock w/ 53 silver gelatin photographs mounted sized 7.5 x 9.5 in. all with excellent strong contrast. Contemporary Heinn Co. limp textured leather post-binder black screw posts at gutter margin minor chipping head & foot of spine scuffing & wear to covers a couple leaves corners w/ minor chipping still a VG exemplar. This outstanding souvenir album offers an invaluable visual record of the famed Rancho Los Alisos created as a lush landscaped park by Judge Charles Silent 1843-1918 from 1905 when he purchased the property from Jonathan Slauson to his death. Serving as his country estate amidst the orange groves many of which can be seen in the birds-eye photos which open the album Silent contracted with noted Arts & Crafts architects Charles & Henry Greene to create a lush and opulent landscape. These photos depict how the judge sculpted and experimented with palms and other exotic trees through winding paths and roads along with glimpses of the one-story ranch house designed by the Greene’s the waterfall fountain & pool 1 of several reservoirs on the property rustic Arts & Crafts timbered gates pathways and fences. For over twelve years he continued to add land to the properties as he expanded the plantings and placed fairy like settings with rustic stone walls earthen bowls and lavish fern plantings which were open to the public on Sundays with a sign on the front gate reading “Visitors Welcome.†Silent imported the first Copa de Ora vines into California from Hawaii shared many of his prized specimens with Henry Huntington served many years as Los Angeles Park Commissioner laid out Elysian Park made over Pershing Square and started Griffith Park. It proved to be a popular Southern California tourist spot for a time and occasionally Real Photo Postcard images of the Rancho and surrounding area appear on the market but we were unable to find any similar large images to these at auction or in catalogues. The photographers for this album were Arion Putnam 1871-1949 and Carlton Valentine 1871-1970 storied Los Angeles commercial photographers who specialized in landscape photography. Putnam’s father John R. Putnam 1834-1913 had founded the firm originally with Carlton Valentine by the 1880s and Arion who was one of the Southern Pacific’s official photographers as well as a noted California Impressionist plein air painter operated the studio with Valentine and was the active photographer for the firm even before his father’s death. The 295 acre Rancho Los Alisos was purchased in July 1953 by the California Girl Scouts council and established the very popular Camp Aventura which continued to operate until the end of the 1960s. Dating of this album was established as the patent number for the Heinn Co. label indicates ca. 1908 and Putnam & Valentine operated under that name from 1901-1920.
