Barrett 1306.

Promotional piece encouraging emigration to Baja California with descriptions of the agricultural opportunities and the city of Ensenada. George H. Sisson was an American mining engineer and entrepreneur who purchased a large land concession in Baja California on July 24 1884 with Luis Huller. This concession extended between 29 degrees north and 32 degrees 42 minutes north and included Cedros Island. Additional purchases extended their holdings to 13325630 acres. In 1885 Sisson and Huller formed the International Company of Mexico in Hartford Connecticut with Sisson as general manager. The business was sold to the British Mexican Land and Colonization Company in 1888. These land holdings were emblematic of the problems in land distribution during the Portiriato 1876-1911; related lawsuits continued for years afterward. unknown

Among the treasures at the Bancroft Library is the original diary of Patrick Breen one of few survivors of the infamous Donner Party the group of California pioneers trapped in the Sierra Nevada mountains in the winter of 1846-47 who resorted to cannibalism to survive. Of the 87 people who entered the Wasatch Mountains only 48 survived.

Much of the present day knowledge of the Donner Party is known from the Breen diary which was originally recovered by rescuer George McKinstry Jr. The news of the Party was an instant sensation and evidently seeking to capitalize on the notoriety McKinstry published extracts from the diary in several newspapers. In 1871 the McKinstry gave the diary to Hubert H. Bancroft.

The present item rarely found in its original wrappers and binding was published by bookseller Albert A. Bieber and stated as the first separate edition of any party of the diary. It comprises chilling extracts from Nov. 20 1846 to March 1 1847. Privately published by Albert A. Bieber ... C. 187976513Bodie: V.p. 1879-1882. Bodie Evening Miner. Two Issues; August 1st and September 19 1882. The first Bodie Evening Miner was published on May 9 1882.Bodie Morning News. June 5 1879.Each a bifolio 4 pp. and all three in very nice condition. The town of Bodie was the location of the first lucrative gold strike in Eastern California. Word spread quickly and by 1879 there was a boom town largely preserved today of around 10000 souls. In 1881 the Bodie and Benton Railway was built and used to haul lumber and other goods from the Bodie mines to the saw mill by Mono Lake. But the writing was on the wall by that time as wall and a mere decade later it was largely deserted. More than $38000000 in gild and silver was taken ut of Bodie and surrounds. It is probably the most visited ghost town in the American West. V.p. unknown
2994Three letters from early California about the time of the Civil War; the Lehmans may have been a Jewish family that moved out West but I cannot find absolute proof of this: ALS. 1pg. 8†x 12â€. January 18 1859. San Carlos. An autograph letter signed “H B Lehman†to his brother: “…they complain of not having received any letters from me since I left home the fault is not mine for I have written several out for the last three years have not been able to write on account of having lost William’s last letter in which he says that he had moved into another house…have been doing rather bad for the last two years but now have hopes of doing better…Uncle Robert’s daughter Yves was married to a young man named Jose…I can see no motive for not maintaining correspondence with you as I say above I have answered all the letters…â€. The letter has mailing folds and is in fine condition. ALS. 2pg. 5†x 8â€. February 17 1861. Yuba County. An autograph letter signed “Saml R. Lehman†to Bill: “…Harriet was much pleased with her gift and prizes it very highly she had deputed me to express her thanks as she had put off writing till next time. I believe that my letters are now coming regularly…We are all well here and there is nothing much for me to write. I have commenced farming – I have done some plowing and put in some grain – have commenced a small garden and am about to put out a few fruit trees. Some of these days I may write you my experience in this to me new business – it may amuse you. You probably think that those pictures will never come – have a little patience. They are not taken yet but will be some day and in due course of time you will receive them. I am very slow about it but you can be satisfied that I am sure…â€. The letter has two mailing folds and light soiling and is in very good condition. ALS. 4pg. 5†x 8â€. June 20 1861. Santa Barbara. An autograph letter signed “Ramon Hill†to Joe: “…I am very happy to hear that you are now improving in health and hope you may always be blessed with good health. It is a particular gift and not granted by Divine Providence to all alike…It makes my heart ache to mention the civil discord and disgrace that has spread over our beloved country for so many years the example of peace and prosperity of every other notice. But what must we do set down and cry for the sins of our brethren. Yes it is a fearful time to handle a horrible spectacle to behold. Were that I was not in the States long before this I should be among the ranks of those blessed with defending the most sacred of causes and shedding their blood for the atonement…â€. 59219San Francisco: P.P. Tornich ca 1922. Three vintage silver-gelatin prints approx. 7-1/2" x 9-1/2" one slightly smaller on commercial mounts ca 11" x 14." The prints show mild surface wear but are clean and retain excellent contrast; moderate soiling to mounts; Near Fine. One mount printed with the photographer's address 110 Congo Street San Francisco at lower right; one image captioned in the negative "Croatian Club Banquet / Feb 11 - 1922 / P.P. Tornich photo" with photographer's embossed stamp at lower left; third image unsigned but clearly from the same or a similar event and in a mount of similar style and date.

Three excellent portraits documenting a meeting of the San Francisco branch of the Hrvatski Sokol a Croatian nationalist membership organization founded in Prague in 1862. The Sokol was modeled on the German turnverein emphasizing gymnastics and physical culture while promoting nationalist sentiment and military preparedness. In the United States the sokols persisted as a means for Croatian immigrants to retain their national identity against the intense pressures of assimilation they faced in their adopted homeland.

The photographs - all group portraits - depict banquet attendees in various costumes ranging from conventional business attire to traditional hunting outfits including feathered caps. In one photograph the group's banner is prominently displayed hanging over a long banquet table the traditional Croatian hawk surrounded by the words "Hrvatski Sokol / San Francisco Cal."

Of the photographer P.P. Tornich we can discover little regarding his professional activities. The Bancroft Library records one holding for an album of Tornich photographs dated 1933 published by the Portola View Company of the first convention of the Slavonic Alliance of California; we find no other institutional records of work by this artist. However Tornich appears to have been a prominent figure in Slavic-American circles in San Francisco serving for at least fifteen years as an officer of the Slavonic Illyric Mutual Benevolent Society for at least three of which he was the Society's President based on advertisements in the San Francisco Call 1897-1912. unknown

19002050Oroville Ca 1900. Very good. Three letters 13pp. total on seven lined sheets. Previously folded. Minor wear and toning. An engaging group of three letters from a mining engineer named Jack in Oroville California to his partner and perhaps brother Eric that discuss the development of their investments in an area that saw a rapid growth in dredge mining around the turn of the 20th century. Our correspondent was working out a new mechanical process for gold mining on a promising site. However his partner and addressee had given power of attorney to an investor named Wyckoff who is described as "a snoty little devil" who "knows no more about a mine or my affairs than a jack rabbit" but was starving the operation of cash while delivering a steady stream of insults. At one point Wyckoff "Left me without cash for ten days when we had nothing but potatoes to feed in the camp." The dastardly money man is also suspected of trying to steal the proprietary process which had already yielded fruit in Mexico. If that weren't bad enough the author was in poor health -- passing blood suffering from continuous headaches and feeling faint. And yet as with any mining venture a fortune was just around the corner: "I will make you money in the mine and prove the process so we can get bigger mines. Everybody is gold-crazy over here." Good content concerning a region of California that saw significant commercial mining development during the late-19th and early 20th centuries. unknown
