1825102273
Letter sheets 8" x 12" 3 pages plus integral address leaf. Extensive tape repairs to folds mostly archival tape but some regular tape too which has caused a little browning in areas long tear obscures writers signature but partially visible creased normal aging and browning remnant of wax seal; otherwise good or better. The letter is to Boston Mayor Josiah Quincy 1772-1864 a future head of Harvard and served eight years in Congress. It appears after becoming Boston's mayor he sent delegates to New York and Philadelphia to study fire fighting techniques in those cities. The author of this letter read about this mission and sent Mayor Quincy a lengthy letter on the subject. The probable author is Solon Robinson 1803-1880 although his signature is partially obscured by a tear. However on the back page a smudged docketed note identifies him as Solon Robertson or Robinson. Robinson was a writer and would become a well known Indiana pioneer. In any case the author would suggest a far more modern system for fighting fires than the existing practice of engines carrying water to fires which would become useless when the water ran out. he proposed putting lead aqueduct pipes "laid deep underground and leading to every part of the city." While her does not use the term fire hydrants the water would be accessed from locked iron covers that would serve that function. ABN.

184438801Boston: John H. Eastburn City Printer 1844. First edition. Disbound. Removed from a larger volume else a very good clean copy. 13 pp. 8vo. The Primary School committee was much agitated by the Secretary of the Board of Education Horace Mann's Seventh Annual Report which complained that there was no real system of education in Boston specifically that the teachers in the higher grades were forced to teacher the basic elements that should have been covered earlier: "The elements must be taught somewhere. If neglected in the primary schools they must be taught in the grammar schools. And thus the order of things is reversed and disarrangement introduced into the whole school system. The teacher who is employed and paid for instructing in the higher branches is compelled to devote time and attention to the studies appropriately belonging to schools of a lower grade. This is found to be the case to too great an extent in the schools of our city. We do not say this to the disparagement of the primary school teachers or from the belief that there is a want of fidelity on their part. We believe it to be in part at least owing to the system of teaching or rather want of system in the primary schools." The Primary School committee attempted to rebut his criticism point by point. Over 175 years later this problem remains as intractable as ever.

Not at AAS. OCLC locates 8 printed copies. American Imprints 44882. John H. Eastburn, City Printer unknown
