18748347Boston: Roberts Brothers 1874. First Edition. Original terra-cotta cloth; gilt spine-titles; 1-7 8-206; 8pp. Gentle soiling to board edges; hint of fraying at crown of spine; old bookplate residue to front pastedown; a tight attractive copy. INSCRIBED on title page: "Rev. John S. Smith / With the regards of / E.E.H. / Feb. 9 1881." <br /> <br /> Posthumous collection of Tuckerman's essays on the relief of poverty in Boston most originally issued as reports of the Minister at Large a post which Tuckerman himself established. Tuckerman 1778-1840 was a pioneer in the field of social reform and his advocacy for Boston's poor in the early 19th century was noteworthy for its emphasis upon education and direct action rather than simple charity. The work begun by Tuckerman nearly 200 years ago persists in the very active Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry which still espouses Tuckerman's principles in overseeing a wide range of public welfare programs in the Boston area. A seldom-encountered work; this copy nicely inscribed by Hale a few years after publication. Roberts Brothers unknown

Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original brown half-leather bdg. with a clip. "Poesie" title on black cloth front cover. Cr. 8vo. (20 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script (Old Turkish with Arabic script). [2], 153, [3] p. Completely handwritten with numerous pages. All edges gilt. This unique manuscript is probably an early sketch written in Ottoman script to be used later for its first edition published by Maarif Vekâleti [i.e. Turkish Ministry of Education] in 1947 in modern Turkish with Latin letters. The Mysterious Universe is a popular science book by the British astrophysicist Sir James Jeans, first published in 1930 by the Cambridge University Press. In the United States, it was published by Macmillan. The book is an expanded version of the Red Lecture delivered at the University of Cambridge in 1930. It begins with a full-page citation of the famous passage in Plato's Republic, Book VII, laying out the allegory of the cave. The book made frequent reference to the quantum theory of radiation, initiated by Max Planck in 1900, to Albert Einstein's general relativity, and to the new theories of quantum mechanics by Heisenberg and Schrödinger, of whose philosophical perplexities the author seemed well aware. The book was denounced by the Cambridge philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, because "Jeans has written a book called The Mysterious Universe and I loathe it and call it misleading. Take the title... I might say that the title The Mysterious Universe includes a kind of idol worship, the idol being Science and the Scientist." A second edition appeared in 1931. The book was reprinted 15 times between 1930 and 1938 and again in September 2007. Salih Murat Uzdilek (1891-1967) was the first to translate this book into Turkish, printed in 1947 under the title "Esrarli kâinât". Although there's no sign in this manuscript, probably the author is Uzdilek. He was a Professor of Physics at Istanbul Technical University, graduated as a naval officer in 1908. It was his father Mehmed Sefik Bey, who as a mathematics teacher introduced him to the study of the subject. Salih Murat developed an interest in the history of mathematics through readings of books by F. Cajori and D. E. Smith. Uzdilek studied engineering in London prior to the First World War, where he was invited to present a communication on the "Introduction of logarithms into Turkey" at the Napier Tercentenary organized by The Royal Society of Edinburgh, 25-27 July 1914. The paper published in the Napier Tercentenary Memorial Volume (1915) was based on the research by Salih Zeki Bey, historian of science and Rector of Istanbul University between 1913 and 1917, published in his Kamus-i Riyaziyat (Encyclopaedia of Mathematics 1898). His findings indicate that Yirmisekiz Mehmet Çelebi, the Sultan's envoy to France, had been presented an astronomical text which included logarithms by the astronomer Jacques Cassini during his visit to the Paris Observatory in 1714. It was this collection that led to the introduction of logarithms into Turkey. Kalfazade Ismail Efendi, a timekeeper, and mathematician compiled an introduction to logarithms for his translation of the astronomical tables of J. Cassini in 1772, which is considered the first work on logarithms, into Turkish. Gelenbevi Ismail Efendi, renowned for his works in mathematics and logic, completed his Logaritma Serhi (Commentary on Logarithms) in 1787. After his return to Istanbul, Salih Murat Uzdilek was invited by the Austrian Dean of the School of Engineering, Prof. Philipp Forchheimer, to give physics lessons at the school. Prof. Uzdilek pursued his interest in the history of mathematics and physics throughout his long career. He was also an active researcher in the physics of sound and music and contributed to the contemporary tonal system of Turkish music. In his later years, Prof. Uzdilek was invited to lecture at the 400th anniversary of Galileo Galilei.

192910268Boston: various 1929. Archive. One medium-sized file box containing approximately six hundred twenty-five items including: commercial brochures 121 samples 11 posters 3 typed letters signed/TLS 304 autograph letters signed/ALS 149 postcards & telegrams 29 and periodicals 5. The commercial or trade brochures are mostly small booklets bi-folds and tri-folds graphically illustrated with images of the equipment on offer and frequently printed in two colors or in duotone. A small but deeply engaging archive depicting the business activities of the Boston Massachusetts kitchen equipment supply firm W.H. Davenhall. The supply company serviced businesses with food production and serving needs far beyond the traditional restaurants and hotels. There are in fact few of those represented therein. The company's stock in trade seemed to have been the many "secondary" food establishments growing in number in the early twentieth century including soda fountains candy shops tea rooms diners cafeterias educational dining facilities gas stations with food offerings cafes lunch shops beauty parlors fraternity houses and military bases. The types of equipment depicted in the archive represents changes in food production for a population rapidly moving away from traditional home dining and increasingly consuming food in new types of establishments. The rapid economic expansion that made all this change possible came to a halt with the Crash of 1929 and the Great Depression. The archive illustrates the experience of a small business in the years leading up to the Crash with issues collecting debts bankruptcy of suppliers and clients etc. The correspondence includes offers of new equipment or supplies often the line between brochure and correspondence is blurred orders inquiries demands for payments complaints requests for new supplier arrangements bankruptcy notices of former customers and more. In addition to the typed and handwritten letters there are postcards and telegrams. A handful of label samples and posters are included as well. Finally there are materials produced by trade periodicals including: Institutional Merchandising Hot Off the Griddle published by Westinghouse American Restaurant Magazine and The Soda Fountain. A wide range of business topics is visible in this archive: bill collection disputes about what was delivered or when disputes about salesmen adding items to an order bankruptcy of a client price changes a UNH fraternity orders a half dozen aluminum pitchers surprised complicated returns of defective merchandise development of school cafeterias the Crash of '29 deliveries abandoned or rejected and more. Condition is generally very good or better. A more detailed description including complete lists of suppliers and clients is available by request. various unknown

1930List328Boston 1930. Oblong quarto 49 pp. With appx. 1400 photos most measuring less than an inch square with roughly 175 in larger formats up to 3 ½ by 5 inches. Very Good. A wonderful labor of photographic love created by an unidentified young woman with ties to the Cabot family of Beacon Hill. The album composed largely of tiny contact prints glued in neat grids. Off-kilter compositions - a portion of a steeple against the sky the tail of a dog etc. - are mixed in with more traditional landscapes leading one to question whether the photographer had modernist aspirations or just took a lot of pictures.<br /> <br /> The photographer is unknown but our best guess is that it was someone who was a friend of Ellen Cabot of Beacon Hill perhaps while both were students or just after. Ellen Cabot the most frequent subject of the album is shown in a variety of settings often accompanied by her dog Prowler. Aerial photography the New England coastline camping life in Cambridge and equestrian competition are all on display. Other highlights include a dog named Benito Mussolini and artful shots of a monk’s torso. A portion of the photos perhaps five or ten percent are not present though the album is otherwise in excellent condition. Handwritten label on the front reads “Newport Races to Topsfield autumn 1930â€. Overall the album is a testament to the energy and spontaneity of youth and the possibilities of the photographic form as well as an intimate look into Boston’s storied upper class. unknown
