"In 1877 the Barlow Brothers John B. and Heman G. established a bindery in the Randall Block near the foot of Lyon street." According to the ad "If you have any Periodical Music or other work that you wish to bound or Books Albums etc. in need of repairs drop us a postal card and we will give it prompt attention." 19699081Ann Arbor Michigan: Westport House 1969. 10 bifolium cards measuring 14.5cm x 11.5cm. One book 15cm x 11cm cardstock wraps string bound. Some signed some with other notes laid in. <br /> <br /> Archive of materials from Westport House also sometimes credited as "La Presse Sous-Sol" The Basement Press of Wallace and Joyce Bonk in Ann Arbor Michigan.<br /> <br /> "Wally" was a professor at the University of Michigan for 25 years served as the chairman of the department of library sciences and was considered an expert in building library collections. Joyce was a librarian and served as the assistant curator of books at the UM Clements Library for over 35 years.<br /> <br /> <br /> The card dated October 25 has a handwritten note laid in that says "This is the first product of my newly-acquired press.I hope I will be able to improve the product." This card and one other Christmas card are unnumbered and presumed to be cards 1 and 2. The rest of the cards are given a general number and also grouped into categories such as Historical Series Literary Series and Christmas Series. This archive contains General Numbers 12 3 5-10 13. <br /> <br /> It also contains a copy of To Hades We Will Go Westport Book II by Jane Howlon Black - actually an anagram for the publisher Wallace John Bonk. Laid in is an announcement of the cancellation of the Westport card series in spring of 1962 to publish this book with an attached specimen page as well as an address correction card. . Inside rear cover is a full color picture of Hudson's plant. The Hudson Commodore was Jack Kerouac's automobile of choice for Dean Moriarty in the TV Show ON THE ROAD. 19443261Detroit: Wayne State University 1944. Very good. 8pp. Original printed self wrappers stapled. Minor dust-soiling and edge wear. Internally clean. The first entry in a series of studies issued by Wayne State University in "Inter-Group Conflicts in Detroit." The studies were triggered by the June 1943 Detroit Race Riots and intended to bring a greater understanding to the relationship between Jewish and African American communities in the city. The majority of the present pamphlet is comprised of twenty conclusions reached by the study the first of which begins: "Jewish business does not have a monopoly on Hastings Oakland or Warren. Negro business is increasingly important in all three areas." Another interesting conclusion reads: "The factor of mixed racial employees does not lead to conflict but more often to friendly relationships." The Detroit branch of the NAACP was one of three sponsors of the study along with the Jewish Community Council of Detroit and the Graduate School of Wayne State University. Pictures include a bird's-eye view of Jackson on MacCabee Day showing an on-going parade various views of Main Street the Michigan Central Railroad Station interior and exterior views of the Michigan Central Railroad shop the state prison the Athenaeum the Elks' Temple Jackson Water Works the city bank park scenes West Side High School St. John's Academy various churches residences lake scenes etc. At bottom of one page is a very small closed tear not affecting the photograph. Wrappers sunned at edges and with "B.C.A 1905" neatly written in ink at spine of front wrapper along with 3/4" split to bottom of spine. Very good. A nice collection of photographs. L.H.
