He famously was part of an early scientific expedition through Russia and Siberia and made important discoveries of mammoth and rhinoceros fossils from Siberia. In 1793-4 he made a second expedition to southern Russia exploring Crimea the Black Sea and the Dnieper valley. In 1799 this work "Bemerkungen auf einer Reise in die Sudlichen Statthalterschaften des Russischen Reichs" was published contributing to early geologic ecologic and ethnographic knowledge of the region. Bound to style in quarter 18th-century morocco over 18th-century marble paper boards Extensively annotated first edition Parsons's enigmatic cypher book draws on heraldy cryptography and typography and led a craze for monogrammatic systems of which many imitators followed. "Such cyphers were extremely popular on both sides of the Atlantic during the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. For inspiration in preparing clients' personal designs engravers typically relied on guides by designers such as William Parsons's New Book of Cyphers." - DDW Parsons's New Book of Cyphers was at the forefront of a publishing craze for cyphers in the 1700s; it was the fourth such book to be printed and dozens of nearly identical ones followed. Samuel Sympson released books with the exact same title as the present in 1739 and 1750. Phillip Barraud meanwhile had the good taste in 1782 to change Parsons's title by one word to "A New Book of Single Cyphers." Cyphers were used to create heraldic devices and monogrammatic signatures to embroider on clothing use as trademarks or store signs or to incorporate into bookplates as many book collectors have and continue to do. Cyphers differ from monograms in that the individual aspects of a cypher system can be exchanged without affecting the overall system; the letterforms in monograms must be redesigned each time. The cypher system with its internal algorithmic rules and capacity for change can easily encrypt secret messages and has done so from mysterious medieval codices like the Voynich Manuscript to the communiques of British generals during the American Revolution to the blockchain and "crypto" today. Cyphers were so faddish in the 1700s that people kept albums full of printed cyphers they had collected from their family friends and celebrities of the period. Cyphers in other words were treated something like autographs something like business cards something like keepsakes and they were devices people and their families identified with strongly. The 600 engraved cyphers across 56 plates in this first edition of Parson's book each show how to interlink two separate letters within Parsons's larger system of encipherment. Parsons gives instructions in both French and English on how to use them to compose longer texts. Parsons comments severely in his preliminary "Advertisement" preface that the earlier works on the subject contained only half the required number of cyphers necessary to complete their alphabets. By extrapolating from Parsons's text and his supplied two-letter cypher building-blocks one could create cyphers of any length that would maintain a consistent coherent design and be able to be deciphered if one knew the system. This book of cyphers seems oriented toward a striving merchant class not an aristocracy born into their family's symbols from the beginning of their lives. Anyone with access to pen and paper could make a cypher of their initials using this book. This interpretation is bolstered by the early-19th century ink manuscript editions found in the book. Numerous pages of repetitive handwriting exercises express upright moral sentiments: "By a commendable deportment we gain reputation." "Compassionate men never prove extortioners." "A flattering companion is a dangerous enemy." "Brave spirits promote the public good." These didactic lines were copied out of Fisher's The American Instructor: or Young Man's Best Companion . . . How to Qualify Any Person for Business without the Help of a Master. More manuscript editions present includes numerous pages of budgetary ledgers for a construction worker or carpenter an architectural sketch calligraphic practice lyrics from a song called "Mr. Clark and His Bacon" by G. Colman and two poems: "The Essex Spark" and "The Model." Parsons was the younger son of a baronet and attended Christ Church Oxford. He entered the army in 1682 and took part in the Glorious Revolution in 1688. Afterward he turned to publishing especially popular works of learning. His translation of Guillaume Marcel's Tablettes chronologiques chronological tables listing the dates of Kings Popes and Emperors ran through many editions. Parsons helped produce a new set of globes but none survive. For the present work Parsons commissioned Michel Tauvel an engraver in the Strand to work on his cypher designs in 1698. Permission to print the complete work was finally given in 1703. The finished book engraved throughout includes a fine frontispiece engraved by Simon Gribelin to Parsons's design and a title-page and text leaves by Joseph Nutting. Seemingly the last issue of this short-lived poetry zine. OCLC locates just two runs four issues of Vol. I and this double issue of Vol. II and only one in the U.S. with no mention of the limitation. Undoubtedly rare and a considerable achievement in corralling so many of the contributors to sign the issue in what might be considered an exercise in "herding cats. Saturday Morning unknown

These controversial tracts oppose political reform in the run-up to the Revolution. Simon Nicolas Henri Linguet 1736-1794 argues that free workers are worse off than enslaved people in a market economy and that despotism is a more effective protector of the poor than liberalism - arguments which would lead to his execution under the Reign of Terror in 1794. This collection comprises the Théorie des loix civiles arguably Linguet's major political work and his Lettres sur la théorie a response to criticisms of Théorie. These works outline a stinging attack on Montesquieu's theories on laws and the state and challenge physiocratic arguments including their objection to grain regulation. Linguet a habitual controversialist was among the most renowned lawyers in France during the 1760s and 1770s until his attacks on other lawyers led to his expulsion from the bar in 1775. Initially a friend of the philosophes he gradually came to reject much of their philosophy - in the Lettres he rejects the argument that English liberties provide a model for France a popular claim among philosophes. Linguet's critique of Enlightenment liberalism in these works has been identified as an influence on Karl Marx. Two distinct editions of Théorie have been identified with a London/1767 imprint. This edition runs to 507 and 532 pages and includes three pages of errata following the "Discours Préliminaire". Many of these errata have been corrected in the other edition which runs to 496 and 528 pages. 3 vols duodecimo 165 x 98 mm. Woodcut ornament to title pages head- and tailpieces. The Broadway production was a notable early success for Simon. It won the author a Tony award and was be adapted for a film. The original version presented at Boston's Colonial Theater excluded the Pigeon sisters in the third act. The present script includes the character of Cecily Pigeon in the third act but presents an entirely different version of the text from the published text. The name of the Broadway producer Saint-Subber appears on the title page. Arnold Saint-Subber 1918-1994 would produce seven of Simon's plays on Broadway. Quarto. Original red wrappers front wrapper lettered in gilt comprising title and "studio duplicating service inc." name and address. 140 mimeographed leaves printed on rectos only additional leaf numbered "3-9A" in Act 3 secured by two brass screw brads. Shortly abbreviated edition of an important and renowned pamphlet in the history in the VOC written by the lawyer Simon van Middelgeest about whom less is known. It is a complaint against the management the so-called "Heren XVII" of the Dutch East India Company VOC by the sharesholders who felt their concerns were being ignored. It is one of the many anonymous polemic pamphlets published by the so-called "doleanten" participants shareholders in which they express their grievances on the self-enrichment and abuses of the "Heren XVII" of the VOC. It is a shortened edition of a 1622 pamphlet titled Nootwendich discours oft vertooch aan de hooch-mogende heeren Staten Generaal van de participanten der Oost-Indische Compagnie tegens bewintshebbers Knuttel 3348; Landwehr VOC 884 which was reprinted several times under different titles including the present. The publishers frequently changed the title because the States of Holland published a proclaimation prohibited Van Middelgeest's Nootwendich discours in 1622 Knuttel 3349. All 12 drawings mounted on a single contemporary stiff paper support 44 x 61 cm neatly arranged in three rows of four each with a border of lines drawn around it in ink. A contemporary pencil inscription below the lower right drawing reads "S. Fokke Amsterdam 1712-1784". Another in a later hand in the lower right corner of the support reads "S. Fokke". A set of drawings by Simon Fokke 1712-1784 made as models for the illustrations in J.F. Martinet's Alle de werken van Flavius Josephus Amsterdam 1783-1787. The 12 pen and ink wash drawings vividly depict Old Testament scenes very beautifully drawn and so subtly washed in a rich pattern of greys and sepia that the spaces left blank seem to radiate fire and sunlight. The engravings made from these drawings are in reverse and have 2 scenes on each plate.Simon Fokke was one of the most important artists of the second generation of 18th century book illustrators. Rare second edition under a different title of an eyewitness report of the dramatic shipwreck of the Arnhem a Dutch East Indiaman built in 1654 for the VOC. The report was written by Simon van den Kerkhoven a religious comforter to the sick Siecken-trooster on board and one of the shipwreck's survivors. The "ziekentrooster" was a religious office within the Dutch Protestant church in the 16th- to 20th centuries. Generally the person fulfilling its duty was not an official member of the clergy but when in service of the major trading companies VOC and WIC they received a special status which permitted them to perform clerical duties like administering the sacraments.The account of the shipwreck of the Arnhem was first published in Middelburg by Jacques Fierens in 1663 under the title: Historisch verhael der wonderlike ende seer zeldsame voor-vallen den gene bejegent die met het retour-schip Aernhem van Batavia na het vaderland verreist zyn den 23 decem. 1661. The present second edition claims on the title page that the name of the author is Johannes van Kerckhoven this appears to be a mistake as both the first edition the present preface and the signature at the end of the account in the present pamphlet mention Simon van den Kerkhoven. Another difference between the two editions can be found in the preliminaries: the dedication to the directors of the Zeeland chamber of the VOC is replaced by a rhymed preface in Dutch titled and signed Aen den leser door Simon van den Kerckhoven van Middelburgh; secken-trooster.On 23 December 1661 the Dutch East Indiaman Arnhem left Batavia in the Dutch East Indies now Jakarta Indonesia and set sail for the Low Countries together with 6 other ships under the command of the Dutch Admiral Arnold de Vlamingh van Oudtshoorn 1618-1662. In February 1662 on their way to Cape of Good Hope the fleet was caught in a storm and was scattered. Three ships disappeared without a trace while the Arnhem ran aground on the Cargados Carajos shoals in the Indian Ocean. Most of the crew managed to leave the ship in a small boat carrying 12 and a larger vessel carrying about 100 both headed for Mauritius many died on that journey and once back ashore the group further diminished and scattered in their attempt to survive. The surviving crew were able to leave Mauritius in small groups by boarding ships calling at the victualing station on the island. Curiously the surviving crew members of the Arnhem are now presumed to have been the last people to have seen live dodos.One of the survivors Dutch sailor Andries Stokram published the first report of this shipwreck in May 1663 in which the officers were blamed for the ship's sinking. They were also held responsible for putting men overboard from the lifeboat. Another survivor the Dutch bookkeeper Johan van Hal refuted these accusations in his report which was also published in 1663. In this same year Van den Kerkhovens report appeared in which he supported the charges of Stokram and held the officers responsible.The paper wrapper is damaged along the fold of the spine internally occasionally slightly browned. Large 1mo broadsheet 66.5 x 46.5 cm with engraved illustration 53 x 45.5 cm at the head with Visscher's name in the plate at lower right and a letterpress verse text below. Impressive large allegorical print of the defeat of the Arminians at the Synod of Dort in 1618 here in the rare first Visscher state. The publisher and engraver Claes Jansz. Visscher heavily reworked the plate of an earlier print by Simon Frisius commemorating the Dutch-Spanish truce of 1609 entitled: Pyramis pacifica. He revised the image so extensively that his revision is often treated as a separate work making the present version its first state. It is the most spectacular print to come out of the Arminian controversy. A more common much smaller and less impressive engraving was also published.A heated theological and political conflict had raged in the Low Countries between the Arminians from 1610 also called Remonstrants and Gomarists for more than a decade when it came to a head with the Synod of Dort 1618/19 which decided in favour of the Gomarists. The Synod led to the 1619 execution of the Republics greatest statesman Johan van Oldenbarnevelt who had supported the Arminian cause. In revenge his sons Reinier and Willem conspired to assassinate the Gomarist Dutch stadholder Maurits of Nassau Prince of Orange. Other prominent members of Dutch society who had political religious or personal grudges against the Prince lent their support. The plot was betrayed in February 1623 and the conspirators arrested and executed from March to May.A corner at the foot torn off and replaced with blank paper with the loss of most of the imprint and the ends of the last 8 lines of verse. A remarkable photo album with images shot by three different Lutheran Church Missouri Synod LCMS missionaries in China along with the descriptive contents list compiled by Rev. R.J. Mueller detailing the purpose and composition. He writes that the Enshih Shihnan Mission had prepared three albums â€œone for the Mission Board one for the Building Committee of General Conference and one at the Enshih Station. The numbers all agree. However not all pictures listed appear in all books.â€ This â€œBuilding Committeeâ€ album was intended to focus primary on the structures homes chapels of the mission as well as surrounding areas and was intended to aid in speeding up communications for fundraising and building affairs issues as correspondents could then merely refer to the master list of numbers held by all three parties. Enshih China was one of the final mission stations established by the LCMS far from their other missions and when Gebhardt returned to Enshih following the Civil War in 1928 there was significant damage to the mission structures to be repaired. Looting by bandits and marauding soldiers had caused over $ 2000 in damage but was encouraged to find that the Lutheran evangelist Shen had continued the mission chapel school orphanage. He would later be joined by Mueller and others although primarily composed of Chinese Staff. These photos in the album includes views of Muellerâ€™s residence windows frames and gutters looted; screens torn doors boarded up as well as views of the native house and threshing floor adapted into an orphanage at Yao Wan after 1930. Several others show the extent of the protective walls built around the properties farm houses the gates as well as farms bridges and nearby fields at Enshih. Landmarks such as rocks shaped like Elephants in the river and Big and Little Hog creek below farmland. A very nice series of photos depict the Tsâ€™i Ts-ung-fu funeral the blind deaf and other orphans about 1931 as well as textiles drying in the sun. Other photos capture the Châ€™i-li-ping market fortune teller temple noodle stand and the Tâ€™ai shan shrine at Châ€™i-li-pâ€™ing. More photos depict Hu Ping-chih the orphanage secretary Yuen Ye-chih cashier in 1934 Hsieh Tâ€™i-ya seminary student who died later in 1937; along with the mission pulpit nearby streets and the rear view of the Yao Wan houses.Of additional interest are the images of the rugged roads to Liang Shui-chin the temple and steep steps drying opium in Kuan-pâ€™e which was a small town between the East Gate and Yao Wan before opium raising was banned in 1934; along with the nearby Châ€™ing-Ching Clear River at the high water stage the front of the True Light Chapel in 1934 as well as the gravestone of Mr. & Mrs. Wang Japanese-Lutherans who had died in 1930. The final photo No. 169 again shows the Clear River below the city. Mueller 1905-1998 graduated from seminary in 1929 and left for China with his wife Dorothy for the Evangelical Lutheran Foreign Mission Board returned briefly to the U.S. from 1937-1940 spent 1939-1942 teaching at a Lutheran seminary in China while being bombed by the Japanese and also served in Shanghai where he would supervise the Lutheran Hour and Lutheran Hour offices.
