II.Theil: Operative Eingriffe bei Verletzungen und chirurgischen Krankheiten der Nieren und Harnleiter. "First succesful nephrectomy" Begin of modern urologic surgery. The era of modern urological surgery began in 1869 when Gustav Simon performed the first carefully planned nephrectomy. After writing a brief notice of the operation in 1870 Exstirpation einer Niere am Menschen. Dtsch. Klin. 1870 22 137-138 Simon prepared a detailed illustrated account which he published as Volume I of his Chirurgie der Nieren. This volume contains two lithographed plates the first a schematic drawing of the patient's injury and the second an unusually artistic rendition probably from a photograph of the postoperative patient standing in front of a mirror displaying her surgical scars. The second volume issued five years after the first deals with the subject of kidney surgery in general discussing operations on both injured and diseased kidneys. This volume over three times as long as its predecessor contains seven plates three in color showing a gunshot injury to the kidney renal calculus and hypertrophy and pre- and post-operative pictures of a case of hydronephrosis successfully cured by surgery. Gustav Simon 1824-1876 Professor der Chirurgie in Rostock u. Heidelberg war einer der genialsten Operateure der Neuzeit. Das vorliegende Werk einer der großen Marksteine in der Geschichte der Medizin ist das Pionierwerk d. modernen urologischen Chirurgie. Am 2. August 1869 eröffnete Simon seine Vorlesung mit folgenden Worten: "Meine Herren ich bin gesonnen heute eine Operation auszuführen welche bis jetzt am Menschen noch nicht unternommen wurde". Die erste Nephrektomie durch Simon war eine glänzende Tat. Mit ihr wurde der Grundstein der Nierenchirurgie dargelegt. Simon benutzte einen linksseitigen Lumbalschnitt unter der 12. Rippe um einen retroperitonealen Zugang der Niere zu erreichen. Der Nierenstiel wurde 3 mal mit chinesischer Seide unterbunden. Die Operation dauerte 30 Minuten alles verlief glatt und planmäßig. Die Patientin gesundete. ---Das ausgedruckte Manuskript des 2 Theils seines berühmten Werkes lag auf dem Schreibtisch neben dem Sterbebett als Simon 1876 an einem Aortenaneurysma verschied. Erste Ausgabe der bahnbrechenden Arbeit über eine neue Operationsmethode der Blasenscheidenfisteln eine der größten Seltenheiten der neueren Gynäkologie. Blasen-Scheiden-Fisteln nach gynäkologischen Eingriffen spielten zur Zeit Dieffenbach's noch keine Rolle. Denn die operative Gynäkologie entwickelte sich erst ab Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Zur Frage renaler oder ureteraler Veränderungen durch Fisteln oder der Puerperalsepsis war eine Stellungnahme zur damaligen Zeit kaum möglich. Daß es von einer Blasen-Scheiden-Fistel zur Infektion von Niere Harnleiter Gebär-mutter Eileiter und Bauchfell kommen kann konnte erst später bewiesen werden. Puerperale Infektionen verliefen damals bekanntlich sehr oft tödlich. Lebensbedrohend waren Keimaszensionen in Harnleiter und Niere und können es auch heute noch sein. Langfristig gefährden pyelone-phritische Schrumpfniere oder Pyonephrose die betroffenen Patientinnen. "Mit Gustav Simon in Deutschland Jobert de Lamballe in Frankreich und Marion Sims in Amerika setzt die Wende zum Fortschritt ein" Stoeckel. Gustav Christoph Jakob Friedrich Ludwig Simon 1824-76 promovierte 1848 in Gießen und wirkte bis 1861 als Militärarzt in Hessen. 'Entscheidend für die spätere Richtung seiner chir. Thätigkeit war ein Aufenthalt in Paris 1851 bis 52 wo er durch den Besuch von Jobert's Klinik die erste Anregung zur Operation von Blasenscheidenfisteln erhielt indem er hier wirkliche bisher unerreichte Erfolge vor Augen sah' Pagel 1595. In seiner Darmstädter Klinik verbesserte Simon des Jobertsche Verfahren namentlich bei der Vervollkommnung der Naht. 'Von da an mehrten sich seine glücklichen Operationen; sein Ruf als Fisteloperateur breitete sich immer mehr aus und gab ihm zu mehrfachen weiteren Publikationen über solche Operationen Anlaß' Pagel 1596. Der Vorrede zufolge scheiterte selbst Dieffenbach der bedeutendste deutsche Chirurg des 19. Jahrhunderts vor Simon bei der fraglichen Operation. - Die Arbeit selbst enthält zu Beginn 12 Krankheitsfälle mit 'epikritischen' Bemerkungen gefolgt von der Beschreibung des von Simon neu entwickelten Operationsverfahrens 'nebst kritischer Beleuchtung der Französischen Jobert'schen und Amerikanischen Simsschen Methode.' Die lithographierten Figurentafeln mit Darstellung von Steiss-Rückenlage Operation der eigentlichen Blasen-Scheidenfistel Operation zur queren Obliteration der Scheide etc. - 'Simon is perhaps best remembered as being the first in Europe to exercise the kidney; he also wrote a fine monograph on vesico-vaginal fistula.' This copy was used to describe 16th-century Lyon bindings with this stamp design applied in the 1972 Le Seicle d'or de l'imprimerie Lyonnaise Toulet page 151; a matching plaque was illustrated on a binding example in the BNF. Two works are found within the first being Pandecta Legis Evangelicae a work on the Gospel's laws and their place in the legal process by the 16th-century monk Simon Du Corroy of the Celestine order. The second work is Dionysius Carthusianus' Monopanton a digest of St. Paul's epistles. Together they provide a topical reference guide to much of the New Testament. Provenance - The 1972 publication noted the book was in the possession of Paul Jammes the French bibliophile and bookseller. A catalog snippet is loose within from E.K. Schreiber 1996. The book was sold in 2025 Sotheby's Paris at the Bibliotheca Brookeriana VIII sale the collection of T. Kimball Brooker. Printer's devices on both title pages. Ruled in red. There seems to be some faded highlighting of initials too but it's faded mostly away. Gilt process left some wash along edges into text block. Fore-edge of title page with small tear mostly repaired except 1 cm along fore-edge and ink mark in bottom corner. Set in textura types with extensive use of roman and incidental italic. 10 108 2; 1 1 blank 154 pp. Third edition revised and enlarged of a rare practical handbook for practicing notaries written by Simon van Leeuwen 1626-1682 the most famous Dutch lawyer of the 17th century after Hugo de Groot Grotius. It incorporates a dictionary of more than 4000 technical terms many borrowed or adapted from Latin giving simple definitions in common Dutch. Unlike the second edition the present third edition explicitly notes that it has been newly revised improved and expanded. It teaches all theoretical and practical knowledge needed in a notary's office presented in the form of questions and answers like a catechism but sometimes also citing sources. Van Leeuwen's approach is refreshingly anti-bureaucratic.From the library of Eeltjo van Beresteyn 1876-1948. With a 1770 owner's inscription some underlining and an occasional pencilled note. Defending despotism in the final years of the ancien régime First edition of this controversial work opposing political reform in the run-up to the French Revolution in a well-preserved contemporary binding. In arguably his major political work Simon Nicolas Henri Linguet 1736-1794 argues that free workers are worse off than enslaved people in a market economy and that despotism is a more effective protector of the poor than liberalism - arguments which led to his execution under the Reign of Terror in 1794. Linguet's work outlines a stinging attack on Montesquieu's theories on laws and the state and challenge physiocratic arguments including their objection to grain regulation. This critique of Enlightenment liberalism influenced the radical factions of the Revolution and the theories of Karl Marx. Linguet a habitual controversialist was among the most renowned lawyers in France during the 1760s and 1770s until his attacks on other lawyers led to his expulsion from the bar in 1775. Initially a friend of the philosophes he gradually came to reject much of their philosophy including the argument that English liberties provide a model for France. Observing this streak of nonconformity Voltaire wrote of Linguet that "Paris too has its Jean-Jacques Rousseau" quoted in Vyverberg p. 476. Two distinct editions of Théorie have been identified with a London 1767 imprint. This edition runs to 507 and 532 pages and includes three pages of errata following the "Discours Préliminaire". The true first edition First edition of this early utopian novel "the best-known of all the radical philosophical novels of the Early Enlightenment" which "surpassed practically every other work of philosophical fiction of the age for notoriety" Israel pp. liii and lvi. The novel details a Frenchman shipwrecked off South Africa - the co-ordinates are given as 60°E/44°S roughly around the Kerguelen Islands - where he finds a terrestrial paradise. Learning the language of the natives the protagonist seeks to explain Christianity to them who greet its central tenets as absurd and its God as unjust. The hero continues his travels and there hears a parable on Christianity that shocked the author's contemporaries - an absolute monarch who owns bees damns them for sucking nectar which had been prohibited merely to test his authority send his son in bee form to redeem them whereupon the different worshippers of the bee messiah kill each other whilst bee priests live indolent lives on pious bees' labour. Rapidly banned in Holland and France it nonetheless went through further Dutch editions a French edition three English editions and two German editions by 1760. Tyssot publicly denied writing the work at the time due to the controversy and some scholars still question his authorship but he himself claimed to have written it in a letter to his son in 1720 and modern scholarly opinion generally supports the attribution ibid p. liv. The book was actually published around 1714 but was pre-dated 1710 possibly to coincide with the Millenarianism of that year or to feign priority for the idea of a "fable of the bees" as Mandeville had published his own parable in 1714. The book poses bibliographic difficulties with four editions purporting to be published in 1710 three in the same place by the same publisher. Rosenberg has established that the present edition best distinguished by a woodcut on the title page of a celestial globe with a knob deviating to the left is the true first edition. Duodecimo 158 x 92 mm. Contemporary speckled calf red morocco label. Ownership label neat ink note of author and early catalogue description to front pastedown. Small chip at base of spine front joint cracked but firm some light browning front free endpaper and frontispiece expertly reinserted. A very good copy. Contemporary blue title wrappers lightly chipped at extremities lettered in black. Stain limited to top margin throughout latter half else a very good copy text clean and crisp. First edition of this rare Brief of Title. The Gratz family of merchants and community leaders in Philadelphia was founded by Barnard Gratz 1738-1801. As a young man he emigrated from Germany to London where he was briefly employed as a clerk. Shortly after relocating to Philadelphia in 1754 he went into business as a merchant in the coastal and West Indian trade and formed around 1760 a lasting partnership with his brother Michael who was involved in the Indian and fur trade as well as land speculation. The two brothers helped found the first synagogue in Philadelphia. Two of Michael's sons Simon Gratz 1773-1839 and his brother Hyman 1776-1857 carried on the family business. Apart from his ongoing involvement with the Jewish Congregation Mikveh Israel "Simon was among the founders of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts" Morais and "a director of the Pennsylvania Botanical Garden" Rosenbloom. Includes a three-page extract from the will of Simon Gratz dated February 16 1839 with his instructions for the disposition of the 71 acres of his estate contained in "the four tracts of land mentioned at the beginning of this Brief." As noted in the present brief p. 28 The Farmers and Mechanics Land and Building Association received its Charter of Encorporation on March 17 1852 acquiring by purchase the Willington Estate from Louisa Gratz Edward Gratz David Gratz and Elizabeth Gratz on April 16 1852. Provenance: The business card of Henry Tunison Jr. "Real Estate Agent and Collector of House and Ground Rents. S. E. Corner 18th & Spruce Streets Philadelphia" has been mounted at the bottom of the front wrapper; Mr. Tunison's manuscript entry appears at the top. A rare item not indexed in OCLC which does however locate two copies of an 1871 edition at Hebrew Union College and the University of Michigan; Singerman is also only aware of the 1871 printing noting copies at the American Jewish Historical Society and the Library Company of Philadelphia. 1770272311770. Paintings. Otherwise very good condition. Seven expertly painted watercolors of Eastern Russian folk people in traditional dress. These are most likely painted for or copied from one of Pallas' books "Reise durch verschiedene Provinzen des Russischen Reichs" 1771-76 later published in English "Journey Through Southern Provinces of the Russian Empire". They all bear penciled numbers in the lower right possibly correlating with plates in a Pallas work. Three paintings have manuscript captions in ink: 'Kosak Woman of Tsherkash' 'Tirgishian Tartar' 'A Kalmak of the lower class.' All are numbered in pencil in lower right corner: 1 3 18 56 65 67 68 . The image "Kosak Woman" caption is followed by an ink name "Pallas". The other 4 watercolors have no captions and subjects include a Woman with a cape Man with floor length fur lined coat and hat Man with long beard golden helmet and fur lined coat; and a Woman carrying a basket on her back and under her arm. Four paintings are 8 x 10" other 3 are 7 x 9" painted on thick paper with two ink border lines some thin and some thick. The image of the Tirgishian Tartar has four small holes in the corners. All have been removed from an album. Peter Simon Pallas 1741 - 1811 German naturalist who advanced a theory of mountain formation and by the age of 15 had outlined new classifications of certain animal groups. In 1761 he went to England to study natural-history collections and to make geological observations. He was appointed professor of natural history at the Imperial Academy of Sciences St. Petersburg in 1768. About the same time he joined a scientific expedition to Russia and Siberia. For the next six years he traveled across the length and breadth of the vast empire. He found a wide distribution of mammoth and rhinoceros fossils including some with their hairy hides preserved in the Siberian ice. He returned to St. Petersburg in 1774 with a great amount of data and many fossil specimens but he had ruined his health. He published his major findings from the expedition in three volumes Reise durch verschiedene Provinzen des russischen Reichs 1771-76 later published in English "Journey Through Various Provinces of the Russian Empire". His chief geological contribution based largely on his study of the Ural and Altai mountain ranges of Siberia was the recognition of a temporal sequence of rocks from the center to the flanks of a range. unknown

Leaf Ee3 is mis-signed as F3 but all leaves are present and in order. The title page contains a woodcut vignette/device. Each chapter begins with a woodcut decorative head piece and an initial. Bound in full dark brown modern calf with blind tooled borders and stamps after an early period style. The upper part of the title page is age-toned / tanned; a professionally sealed 7 cm. tear runs from the gutter part way across the upper portion of the title and is difficult to detect on first sight; a couple of tiny chips on the top edge are restored. Interior pages are generally attractive but with occasional mild age-toning and periodic faint marginal damp staining. A small repair patch is present on the inner margins of leaves A6 and V6. A tear on leaf V6 also carefully sealed extends vertically about 8.5 cm from the lower gutter and part way into the text but causing almost no obscuration. Printed by Thomas Creede who is best known for issuing dramatic works including some of Shakespeares plays. The book is divided into two parts. The first part is a translation of "Recueil des choses mémorables avenues en France sous le règne de Henri II François II Charles IX Henri III et Henri IV." This work is generally attributed to either Simon Goulart or Jean de Serres and was first printed in French no place or publisher in 1595 and again in 1598 expanded to include the reign of Henri IV up to the year 1597. See Brunet IV 1161-1162. The second part with new pagination provides translated selections from Pierre Matthieus 4 part "Histoire des derniers troubles de France" first published in Lyons 1594-95. A section at the end is titled "a brief recitall of the most memorable things which came to passé in Fraunce under the raigne of Henry the fourth until the middle of the Yeare 1598" which if written by Matthieu may possibly represent the first printing of some amendments which Matthieu later added to the second edition of his "Histoire" printed in 1600. This collection provides interesting testaments to the wars of religion in France during the 16th century.
