Quelques frottements et des rayures sur le premier plat, des usures en tête et en queue du dos, un coin émoussé, mais bel et séduisant exemplaire frais, dans une reliure en veau du XVII siècle. Rare édition de poche du Vieux Testament sortie des presses de Simon de Colines (1480-1546), imprimeur et graveur de caractères, en activité de 1520 à 1546. Il succède au libraire-imprimeur Henri Estienne dont il épouse la veuve. Entre 1520 et 1531 il grave une vingtaine de polices de lettres romaines et italiques directement inspirées par les caractères d'Alde Manuce. Ses polices commencent ainsi à remplacer les fontes d'ancien style que les imprimeurs parisiens continuaient à utiliser. Il développa les petits formats in-16°, aux prix accessibles, adaptés aux besoins d'une clientèle d'étudiants, où l'on retrouve toujours la clarté de la mise en page et la beauté des caractères typographiques. Some large foliated initial capitals and fine double column typography of this near incunabulum. Some worm holes usually isolated not affecting integrity of the paper nor readability of the print as they are mostly confined to the margins mainly at the beginning & end of the book. This short treatise comprising three books presented in the form of a dialogue between two children named Charles and Marguerite discussing several aspects of heaven and earth. The first book discusses celestial movements and circles the second book treats the solar system more extensively the quality of different planets the size of the earth and its proportion and distance to the other celestial bodies. Girault also discusses why the sun appears to be larger in the winter than in the summer explains eclipses and tells more about the directions and retrograde movements of several planets. The third book is more on terrestrial topics. With manuscript inscriptions on the first free endleaf and on the title page. Binding worn corners bumped parts of the backstrip loose some water- staining slightly dust-soiled with some small tears mainly in the foot margin some repaired and a wormhole in the foot and one in the fore-edge margin. Otherwise in good condition. Lacks the rarely seen woodcut map of the world "Typus Cosmographicus Universalis" and lacks Jehan Petit's printer's device to title page but this device bust on a pedestal is present on verso of last leaf. Very light toning throughout and darkening and tidelines to first 170 or so pages but restricted to very wide margins not text. Additional tidelines at bottom to final 30 pages and again with no effect upon the clarity of the text. Pages are supple with a nice easy-to-read typeface.<br /> <br /> Simon Grynaeus wrote the preface "Declaratio" but John Huttich alone compiled this massive and invaluable historical work. Later editions dropped this preface because it contained text critical of The Inquisition.<br /> <br /> One title page variant noted in WorldCat. Index complete.
