Oblong format: 12-3/4" x 15" <br/><br/>The Market Street Railway Company was a commercial streetcar and bus operator in San Francisco the core of its runs transporting up and down Market Street in the city hence the name of the company. Throughout its lifetime the company traded hands and names on numerous occasions. It was the first horsecar line to open in San Francisco beginning its runs on July 4th 1860. The company had a difficult time convincing others of the need to electrically run systems but the 1906 earthquake and fire gave them the chance to overrule the votes and rebuild the system the way they chose. The cars were large and luxurious and are on display in San Francisco's Railway Museum. Only 2 later editions found in institutional holdings on OCLC. Rare in the trade. Many b/w illustrations and photographic images throughout. 3-D glasses in shape of a train included. Various sizes from 6" x 3" to 5" x 7-1/2" <br/><br/>Collection includes: One b/w pamphlet entitled "Modern Locomotives and Cars 1939" with images of all the different types of cars used by the "Pennsy" Railroad. The second brochure gives light details of the different long-distance trips travelers can make and is titled "When West Meets East". One brochure gives illustrations of all the different accomodations for long-distance travelers called "For Your Trip East - the Fleet of Modernism". The other brochure details the railroad's "Magic Movies" 3D films of fast moving trains at the Golden Gate International Exposition with 3D glasses included. The last item an advertisement printed recto and verso displays a couple black and white illustrations advertising a round trip from Chicago to New York for only $27.25. "The PRR was the largest railroad by traffic and revenue in the U.S. for the first half of the twentieth century. Over the years it acquired merged with or owned part of at least 800 other rail lines and companies. At the end of 1925 it operated 10515 miles of rail line; in the 1920s it carried nearly three times the traffic as other railroads of comparable length.
