A delicate little pamphlet 5 1/4 x 5 1/16 inches with a fragile string-tied binding. Wrappers are soiled and chipped; some minor tearing to pages at binding but booklet remains intact; first leaf sticking at binding. Half inch triangular chip missing from back wrapper. Toning and soiling inside. What at first glance seems to be a typical child's ABC book is in reality a land promotional piece for the Chicago & North-Western Railway. "R is for Railroad train with equipment the best; Which on the North -Western Will take you out West." Includes a small inset map of the Chicago North-Western Railway and 8 pages of text extolling the virtues of the million acres of land the railway owns ready to sell in southern Minnesota and southeastern Dakota. An alphabet book in rhyme that includes text describing the benefits of moving to Dakota Minnesota and other places served by the Chicago and North Western Railway Company. 4 copies found on OCLC which lists the date as 1889. An octavo of 9 by 6 inches with light rubbing and wear around the perimeter of the covers and with modest soiling to the title page and verso of the front cover and to the recto of the rear cover. Without a dust jacket as issued. Issued by the General Passenger Department of the Long Island Railroad. 96 pages followed by a fold-out map five color map of Long Island which has a one inch closed tear in one fold and a two inch closed tear starting at the end of the above tear both of which have been repaired with archival tape. The United States assumed custodial power over Cuba under the treaty ending the Spanish-American War. Cuba gained formal independence in 1902 as the Republic of Cuba but the U.S. continued to keep troops in Cuba and retained the right to intervene in its internal and foreign affairs. During this period which lasted to 1908 with later incursions the U.S. military supervised the development of the local military and implemented several public-works projects such as a modern railroad system.
