This railroad seems to been relatively short running from the Connecticut border south of Longmeadow Massachusetts to East Hartford. At the final 1887 meetings of the stockholders and directors recorded in this minute book the Company appeared to be facing a foreclosure suit by the Connecticut State Treasurer. Withal still about very good. A rare pamphlet promoting a major Mexican railroad company with plans to build a line across Mexico to the Pacific Ocean. The by- laws are statutes of the railroad are given its capitalization is discussed and the officers listed. Mariano Riva Palacio was the President of the railroad company and Edmundo Stephenson whose name appears at the end of this report is listed as the Vice President. Mariano Riva Palacio was a prominent Mexican statesman with a distinguished record of political and economic reform. He served as governor of the State of Mexico several times and though an ardent republican defended the Emperor Maximilian at Queretero. 1867102296Pamphlet 8vo original printed wrappers black and white folding map 13" x 16" 15 pp. Some minor soiling to wrappers abrasion in top corner of front wrapper affecting margin line a little but not affecting text map joined to page on investment offering making it a little hard to open page normal aging; otherwise very good. This pamphlet relates to a bond offering maturing in 43 years the company was issuing to raise capital. The funds would be used to complete the railroad's connecting systems. Included is typical financial data supplied with these offerings from a report by the chief engineer. Railroad bonds were a popular investment during the second half of the 19th century which helped prompt Henry Varnum Poor to publish his "History of Railroads and Canals in the United States" in 1860. This work enabled investors to see comprehensive financial information on just about all railroad companies. This pamphlet includes a very nice folding map of "The Saint Paul and Chicago Railway.". Two holdings found in OCLC: Northwestern University Library and the National Library of Israel. On this record the place of publication is given as England. DeWitt & Snelling was a bookseller and occasional-publisher in Oakland California. The company was owned by James F. Snelling and Frederic M. DeWitt. The New York Public has a group of catalogues running from 1905-1913. From the ÒNoteÓ at the beginning of the volume: ÒIn 1893 Mr. Willliam Townsend Mr. George Townsend and I contracted with the Syria Ottoman Railway Co of London to build a railway from Acre and Haifa on the Mediterranean coast to Damascus. During a trip made to Syria with Mr. George Townsend the following letters were written." Very colorful and evocative descriptions of life and scenery of the region. R.R. on binding and endsheets. Minor soiling to contents. Written in a neat and legible hand. The Boston & Maine Railroad and the Eastern Railroad were both founded in 1836 and ran competing lines throughout the 19th century. The B. & M. acquired the Eastern in 1890 ending competition on the rail route from Boston to Portland. This volume describes more than 300 land transactions made by the Eastern and Boston & Maine Railroads primarily from the early operational years of the 1830s and 1840s. This volume appears to have been copied out neatly at a later date perhaps after the purchase of the Eastern by the B. & M. and includes transactions ranging from 1836 to 1894. It is indexed by town at the end. Entries include the sellers' names the bounds of the parcel the price paid and the date. The towns involved include Chelsea Everett Lynn Revere Saugus Swampscott Salem Beverly Rowley Hamilton Wenham Ipswich Newbury Newburyport and Salisbury. unknown books

A small quarto of 9 by 5 5/8 inches with heavy wear to the cloth at the head and heel of the spine such that the cloth is worn down to the edges of the text block. The cloth is also worn through in several spots at the lower edges of the boards. The upper 1 1/2 inches of both joints are splitting from their respective boards. Without a dust jacket. No pagination. Wrappers separated along spine last two text leaves loose. FIRST EDITION. The map shows the northern half of the U.S. from the Pacific to Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. The proposed railroad extends from the Missouri River near Fort McKean westward to the towns of Olympia Portland Seattle and terminating at Whatcom just north of Bellingham. The route splits into a northern and southern branch just above Coeur d'Alene Lake. The publisher Jay Cooke was the famous financier of the Civil War; his private bank financed the construction of the railroad. 1884100459Folding train schedule 4 1/2x 9 20 panels large folding map in color. Some browning and aging some separation at the middle fold two of those separations are a few inches three other smaller tears at the middle fold these are repairable a few chips and tears at edge folds. Nice piece of railroad memorabilia with substantial information about rates and schedules. Most of the trains are geared toward the west which gives an idea on the process of opening up this still relatively new part of the country.The map has its flaws but it is sound enough to get a feel for the lines of the Union Pacific. There is a map of California Northwestern Railway and Connections on the inside of the rear cover. The railroad was formed in 1898 and merged into the Northwestern Pacific Railway in 1907.
