OCLC locates no copies of this broadside but shows the American Antiquarian Society holding a similar item issued a year later American Broadsides and Ephemera. Two plates detached one with a chipped corner. Overall very good. Organized by the War department under the direction of Jefferson Davis who was Secretary of War at that time a collection of volumes was produced in the quest for the best route for a railroad to the West. Jefferson Davis wrote part of the introduction to this series and outlines the goals of the project. This report is on routes explored in Northern California and Oregon. Specifically the expedition was to look for a railroad route crossing the Sierra Nevada near the source of the Carson River and to see if it was feasible to connect the Sacramento valley with the Oregon Territory. Most of the color plates in this volume are located in the first three parts of the publication which is focused on topography geology and botanical subjects. One of the great sources of information on the west the Pacific Railroad Reports also contains some great illustrations. This installment Vol. III is no exception. Included are some interesting and colorful pictures of the Mojave Indians and their territory. This report contains intelligence on an expedition near the 35th parallel which took the southern route due west to the Pacific Ocean from Fort Smith Kansas that was conducted by Lieutenant A.W. An attractive broadside promotional for the St. Louis Iron Mountain & Southern Railway with a large engraving in the center depicting the route from St. Louis through Arkansas and into Texas beneath a train wheel bearing wings about which the motto "Bound for the happy lands" appears all in the center of a circle of stars. A schedule of ticket costs for various routes is included as well as a pitch directed at homesteaders regarding the purchase of government lands. The names of three land agents are listed at bottom - one in Missouri one in Illinois and one in Arkansas. <br> <br> The railway touts their "large grant of lands from the United States Government embracing all varieties of soil and timber adapted to Farming Fruit Growing and Grazing purposes.Immigrants can locate on railroad land in well improved neighborhoods having Roads Mills Churches and Schools and peopled by honest and industrious citizens who will give a cordial welcome to all good people coming among them." <br> <br> Only six copies in OCLC spread over four records located at Yale SMU Michigan the University of Texas at Arlington Truman State and the University of Missouri at St. Louis. Addressed prospective settlers and travelers alike this guide consists of historical geographical and agricultural information and discusses at length matters s as commerce climate education taxes prices and the regions of the Pacifi North-West. Each county is described and suggestions are provided to prospective emigrants such as "In mercantile pursuits the opening is good f men of enterprise and capital; but the chances for mere clerks are not good." Farm labor wages in these parts are recorded as being between $25 and $30 per month and lumber mills wages between $60 and $90 per month for first-class hands. It is also noted that "Chinamen work for the railroads and boards themselves at $1.00 a day and in winter take contracts for grubbing brush land." There are ten full-page illustrations which include a two-page "Bird's Eye Vi of Portland Oregon" "Saw Mill on Puget Sound W.T." "Astoria Oregon Entrance to Columbia River" "First Street Portland Oregon" and "Commercia Street Seattle W.T." with folding map of the region Unfolded 28 1/2 x 18 inches in the back. A bound volume containing a collection of ten publications relating to the Western Rail-Road Corporation from the incorporation in 1836 to 1840. The First Annual Report from 1836 is included twice. Bound in contemporary original three quarter leather which is moderately to heavily worn with the front board nearly detached. There is minor to moderate foxing and the final half of the text is lightly stained at the top corner. The 1836-37 Reports of the Engineers is complete with two fold-out maps which were printed on very thin onion-skin paper. These two maps have been detached and are misfolded with minor tearing as well as some foxing. A ready-made collection of the founding documents of this railroad company which starts in Boston winding its way across the state where it enters New York State at West Stockbridge. Fascinating piece of railroad memorabilia that documents railroad company mergers deeds for track expansion and other contractual correspondence dated from 1839-1915 chiefly between Massachusetts and New York. Many of the transactions mention concern the Boston and Albany Railroad connecting Boston to Albany. The ledger appears to record events from the original documents. Sometimes it cites the individual who copied the document. While the the dates of documents it refers to go back to the before the mid 19th century these entries were probably done in the late 19th century or early 20th century. The ledger contains over 400 pages of hand-written contract documents most one to three pages long plus 26 pages indexing 166 contracts at the front. Nearly all with Public Notarization as well as signatures of the people involved. These are copies of the originals inked in various highly legible hands. Many of the documents are of the Boston and Albany Railroad which would become part of the New York Central Railroad system. </p> books

Stock has suffered some fairly heavy frame burn to extremities and verso blank along with some brief glue residue and paper flaws from where the stock was previously mounted not affecting image or text. Still overall Very Good the colors and photograph vibrant. Initiation certificate to ORC member William A. Nye of the Pottsville Division No. 416 P&R Ry. Philadelphia & Reading Railway Caboose No. 90073 dated July 10 1910. The head of the certificate shows a lovely red engine steaming past a grassy field over which is mounted Nye's photographic portrait though the largest portion of the piece is devoted to an oversized symbol of the ORC a large circle 23cm in diameter divided into three equal parts depicting an arm with a coupling an arm with a lantern and whistle and an arm entwined with a snake-like chain. This pamphlet relates to a bond offering the company was issuing to raise capital. Management claims that the company has favorable prospects and the mortgage bonds being offered are a secure and profitable investment. Railroad bonds were a popular investment during the second half of the 19th century which helped prompt Henry Varnum Poor to publish his "History of Railroads and Canals in the United States" in 1860. The work enabled investors to see comprehensive financial information on just about all railroad companies. This pamphlet includes typical financial data about the company and a folding "Map of the Union Pacific Railroad and its Connections." The map is in wonderful condition. Offices, books

Delineated are counties major cities and also small cities that held a prominent place along certain railroads. The scale of the map is approximately 10 miles to 1/4 in. Follansbee was a Harvard graduate and notably active alumnus serving as president of the Associated Clubs of Harvard who studied law at Northwestern University prior to becoming a board member and director of the Erie Railroad Company.<br>Â Â Â Â This admiring hand-accomplished homage to Follansbee's life and career was commissioned by his fellow directors and => beautifully calligraphed and illuminated on vellum by the Harris Engrossing Studio of Chicago. The capitals are accomplished in whitework gilt purple and green and the text in an even handsome modern Gothic hand with a gilt border surrounding the text on each page. Each leaf is protected by a moiré-patterned tissue guard. The final page was signed by the chairman and the secretary of the board and pressure-stamped with the Erie Railroad Company's seal.<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Dark blue morocco framed in gilt double fillets and panelled in a dotted gilt roll with gilt-tooled corner fleurons; spine with gilt-ruled raised bands and gilt-framed compartments. Turn-ins tooled to echo covers cream moiré silk endpapers all edges gilt. Binding as above edges and extremities showing slight sunning and wear. 1970151354N.p.: N.p. 1970. Archive of 32 vintage photographs documenting the October 20 1970 collision of two trains along the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad line in Raytown Missouri. Also included in the archive is a single broadside reward poster offering $5000 for information pertaining to the accident. <br/><br/>According to a contemporary newspaper article which appeared in nearby Jackson County's Independence Examiner the accident was believed to have been caused by juvenile vandalism to a nearby track switch. The collision and subsequent derailment resulted in the death of one engineer whose partial body is visible in several photographs. <br/><br/>The photographs in the archive range from close-up shots of the mangled train cars and tracks to distance views of the surrounding woods. Frequently displayed in the images is a small handwritten police chalkboard noting the date location and case numbers. A vivid and interesting look at investigative photography and railway disasters in the late twentieth century. <br/><br/>Photographs 10 x 8 inches housed in a manila envelope with the logo of Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad Co. on the top left corner. Very good clean copy with long tear repaired on th verso and tiny chips at one fold on map inch tear to fore edge of certificate and along bottom margin. Ink on drafting vellum with colored outlines. 15 x 24 inches. Docket sheet mounted to verso. In 1874 the Hudson Tunnel Railroad Company soon named the Hudson River Railway Company was formed to construct tunnels between Jersey City and Greenwich Village the route originally to be about two miles commencing at a point under the Hudson River in the westerly boundaryline of the state of New York opposite the foot of Clarkson street at the termination of the Hudson Tunnel Railroad Company of New Jersey and thence running by a feasible route under the bed of the river and beneath the surface of the city of New York to a point at or near the westerly side of Broadway between Prince and Eighth streets; from whence the line proceeds via Sixth avenue to Thirty-third street New York but stopped construction well before completion. The assets land partially-constructed tunnels trackage etc. were eventually sold to the newly-organized New York & Jersey Railroad incorporated on February 12 1902 under the leadership of William G. McAdoo who was later U.S. Treasury Secretary and which then became the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad 1906. The original of this profile was drafted in 1891 before the railroad collapsed and the present certified copy was prepared by the Secretary of State's office on February 25 1909 almost exactly one year after the official opening of the tunnel the Pennsylvania Railroad's North River Tunnels the second to burrow under the Hudson did not open until late 1910. The reason that a copy of the map was requested is not known but what is known is that the railroad was seeking to extend the Sixth Avenue line later as well as other related projects. Perhaps the map was needed to settle some land issue or in some legal negotiations as the pencilled word "referee" appears after two sets of initials. The tunnels still carry a heavy load of PATH train commuters between Jersey City and Manhattan. Similar maps are difficult to locate.
