1927172731Likely Beijing: Jinghan tielu guanli ju before 1927. From bustling Beijing to historic Hankow First edition first printing of this guide to the towns and counties traversed by the Peking-Hankow railroad China's first long-distance railway line and the lifeblood of the country's modernizing economy. Aimed at the armchair traveller and tourist alike the parts discuss scenery local customs important historical events and matters of cultural interest The Peking to Hankow railway was built as a co-operative venture between the Imperial Chinese Railway Company and the Belgian China Railway Survey Company. The German engineer Heinrich Hildebrand was engaged to survey the 1500-mile route and in June 1898 the contract was awarded to a Belgian syndicate. Bonds worth 112 million Francs were issued to French investors to raise the necessary finance. Construction began at both ends of the line and progressed at a rate of 500 metres per day. The first trains began to run on sections of the track in 1901 and in 1902 the Empress Dowager Cixi made her triumphant return to the capital using part of the line. Four years later construction was finally completed. An engineering triumph the project facilitated unprecedented levels of commercial and leisure travel between north and central China. The title evokes the long history of the Beijing and Hankow regions by referring to them as "Yan" and "Chu" the names of their equivalent Zhou dynasty states. This guide was issued the Peking-Hankow Railway Administration Chinese: Jinghan tielu guanli ju. In 1927 Chiang Kai-Shek's government established its capital at Nanjing and the name of the route was changed to "Beiping-Hankow Railway" providing a terminus ante quem for the date of publication. CONDITION: Very good margin chipped at upper right corner a few minor stains.
A rare and striking broadside issued by the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railway advertising the Rock Island through-express route and promoting the railroad’s numerous destinations connections and amenities.

Featuring the eye-catching mix of typefaces and colors that characterized railroad advertising in this era this attractive broadside promotes the numerous midwestern stops and destinations accessible via the Chicago Rock Island & Pacific R’y. At this time two through-express trains for Kansas and Nebraska ran daily in connection with the Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe and Union Pacific railroads. As noted here meals were served in palace dining cars for seventy-five cents each and 150 pounds of baggage were allowed on each full ticket and seventy-five pounds on each half ticket free. The line’s various destinations included Iowa City Council Bluffs Denver Salt Lake City and San Francisco as well as “all points in Kansas Nebraska Colorado Arizona New Mexico Utah Montana and California.â€

Showing the Rock Island R.R. in bold the inset map spans from Chicago and Lake Michigan in the east to Omaha and Council Bluffs in the west and reaches from St. Paul in the north to St. Louis and Kansas City in the south—with Lake Michigan lying in the upper-right corner. One axis of the line extends from Milwaukee and Racine Wisconsin to Leavenworth Kansas and another stretches from Chicago to Omaha. Various spurs connect to both.

The lower section of the broadside features a marvelously detailed illustration of the interior of a palace dining car showing numerous fashionably dressed passengers seated and dining among African American waiters who are shown in the small kitchen and serving food. In the far-right end of the train men are depicted in drawing rooms—reading newspapers and smoking—and various railway operators and ticket-men appear at the ends of the car. Also included is a table of connections with various railroads that could be made in “Union depots.†Through-tickets via this route could be found on sale at all coupon offices in the U.S. and Canada. Those seeking additional information folders maps and times-tables are encouraged to contact any of the ten agents and managers of the Rock Island R.R. listed at the bottom who were based in New York Toronto Philadelphia Chicago etc.

Established in 1847 as the Rock Island & LaSalle R.R. the company was reincorporated in 1851 as the Chicago & Rock Island R.R. Co.—its rails during this period reaching to Morris Illinois and later Ottawa. After acquiring the Mississippi & Missouri R.R. in 1866 the company was renamed Chicago Rock Island & Pacific R.R. Co. Expanding between 1873 and 1882 the company built more branch lines that reached into Iowa as well as Kansas City. In 1880 the firm was reorganized under the name Chicago Rock Island and Pacific R’y Co. and by 1883 extended nearly to the southern boundary of Kansas. After Congress granted passage across Indian Territory in 1887 the Rock Island R.R. began developing through Texas to Galveston as well as New Mexico Territory. During the 1920s the railroad enjoyed considerable success. In 1926 the company began constructing a freight line between Amarillo Texas and Liberal Kansas which was finished in 1929 and served to make accessible a country of rich grain. While the railroad industry continued fairly steadily through 1930 between 1931 and 1935 the Depression took a toll on the Rock Island R.R. and went into decline. The company ceased operation in 1980.

OCLC records just one copy held at Yale.

REFERENCES: “Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railway Records†at Kansas Historical Society online.
Chicago: Cameron, Amberg & Co., Printers, [ca. 1880] unknown

1960174179Amman: "Cooperative Society Press for the Jordanian Ministry of Transport" 1960. Rare operational guide for the Hejaz Jordan Railway First edition of this manual of regulations for railway workers comprising numerous technical terms and train-driving and handling instructions and procedures. We have traced no other copies. After the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire in 1922 the famous Hejaz Railway which connected Istanbul to Mecca via Damascus and Amman was split into branches one being the narrow-gauge Hejaz-Jordan Railway HJR from Jaber al-Sirhan to al-Mudawwara. This was the main passenger-carrying railway in Jordan. In 1960 the year of publication "talks between Syria Jordan and Saudi Arabia about rebuilding the railway began in 1948 but it was not until 1960 that a contract was drawn up with an unlikely consortium of Arabian Japanese and Spanish companies. This was cancelled in 1962" Lambert p. 91. This manual which replaced the instructions of 1934 was issued by the Jordanian Ministry of Transport and it is signed off by Abd al-Karim al-Aqla Director General of the Jordanian Hejaz Railway. Copies were to be distributed "to each competent employee". It includes guidance on conditions of service shift work official clothing and badges distribution of bulletins operational instructions and much more. In addition to the names of several kinds of trains and manual signals to be used at day or night in different situations examples include "don't open the doors of the carriages when the train is moving" nor let passengers on or off outside stations; "fire extinguishers"; "types of traffic lights" illustrated with diagrams; and "sirens" long and short and what specific numbers of repetitions mean. Some final sections address specific issues such as if a train or carriage is suddenly out of control the duties of the train conductor and those of workers using push-trolleys. The later note in German on the flyleaf says that the book was to be used by the Aqaba Railway Corporation ARC the organisation running the freight Aqaba Railway line from 1979 to 2018. 1854List1708Philadelphia 1854. Ninth plate ambrotypes in a union case measuring 2 ½ x 2 ⅛ inches visible in larger case. With the identification of Isaac Rehn with his imprint and “Patented July 4 & 11 1854†imprinted on the case. A fine pair. A striking pair of ambrotypes of Mary and Moses Pennock who were members of the Kennett Square Underground Railroad network as well as active members of the Kennett Square abolitionist and Quaker community. Moses was one of the founders of the Longwood Progressive Meeting. In R.C. Smedley’s History of the Underground Railroad in Chester and Neighboring Counties of Pennsylvania Lancaster Office of the Journal 1883 the Pennocks are mentioned on p. 301 as working as part of the network surrounding Isaac and Thamazine Meredity. Their son Samuel who would go on to secure important agricultural patents is also mentioned twice.

The images are notable from a photographic history perspective as well as being early examples of the ambrotype process that had been patented in part by fellow Quaker and spiritualist Isaac Rehn. Rehn held a partial patent on ambrotypes along with James Ambrose Cutting of Boston and became unpopular among other photographers for his efforts to extend his patent. He later practiced spiritual photography and was a Professor of Chemistry at Pennsylvania Medical University in Philadelphia. Rehn was also involved in radical politics as a founder and leader of the Philadelphia section of the International Workingmen’s Association which was later disenfranchised by Karl Marx along with several other American sections. Examples of Rehn’s work are held at the National Gallery of Art the Library Company of Philadelphia and Yale’s Sterling Memorial Library.

Overall a very fine and significant pair of images. unknown

The illustrated Ottoman women's magazine Hanimlara Mahusus Gazete features an important photograph of a section of the railway. This weekly magazine is accompanied by four issues of the journal Malumat with images of the first train on the railway the first passenger load of pilgrims and Dara'a station festooned on the anniversary of the coronation of Sultan Abdulhamid II. Both Han mlara Mahsus Gazete and Malumat were the brainchild of the publisher Mehmet Tahir. Han mlara Mahsus Gazete was issued between 1895 and 1908 and was mostly addressed to Muslim women of the Ottoman upper classes. Contributors included Emine Semiye 1864-1944 a prominent activist and member of the Committee of Union and Progress. The articles featured in the magazine often restricted themselves to themes of marriage and the family but some turned to broader topics. The present issue contains an article on Annie Edson Taylor who was the first to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel and survive. Also included in this collection is an issue of Revue Technique d'Orient from 1912. This journal focused on scientific advancements in the Ottoman Empire and worldwide. In album embossed with “Havana Central Railroad Co./ Progress Photographs/ GUANAJAYâ€. Photos with fine contrast and some wear; mounts with minor damage slightly warped with some detached from binding. Overall excellent. Havana Central Railroad Company was an American company formed in April 1905. It opened two electric tram lines—Havana to Guanajay in 1906 and Havana to Güines in 1907—before it was bought by the English company United Railways following the Panic of 1907. Offered here is a photo album showing the construction of the Guanajay line. The photographs show laborers assisted by horse-drawn carts digging culverts laying tracks and erecting bridges and buildings.

This project came on the heels of the successful efforts of the Cuba Company another railroad company to make the emerging Cuban Republic amenable to American business. They did so first by using ‘revocable permits’ which could ostensibly be revoked by the new government when it was formed to circumvent the Foraker Amendment prohibiting concessions to American companies by the US’s military government; and second by using their close relationships to several members of the Cuban Constitutional Convention to include a law allowing irrevocable permits.1 These along with the Platt Amendment and Governor Leonard Wood’s General Railway Law led to what would amount to domination by US interests in Cuba particularly but not exclusively in the railroad industry.2

Of interest to scholars of the early Republic of Cuba especially the history of US businesses in the country.

1 Juan C.
