Two holdings found in OCLC: Northwestern University Library and the National Library of Israel. On this record the place of publication is given as England. DeWitt & Snelling was a bookseller and occasional-publisher in Oakland California. The company was owned by James F. Snelling and Frederic M. DeWitt. The New York Public has a group of catalogues running from 1905-1913. From the ÒNoteÓ at the beginning of the volume: ÒIn 1893 Mr. Willliam Townsend Mr. George Townsend and I contracted with the Syria Ottoman Railway Co of London to build a railway from Acre and Haifa on the Mediterranean coast to Damascus. 1867102296Pamphlet 8vo original printed wrappers black and white folding map 13" x 16" 15 pp. Some minor soiling to wrappers abrasion in top corner of front wrapper affecting margin line a little but not affecting text map joined to page on investment offering making it a little hard to open page normal aging; otherwise very good. This pamphlet relates to a bond offering maturing in 43 years the company was issuing to raise capital. The funds would be used to complete the railroad's connecting systems. Included is typical financial data supplied with these offerings from a report by the chief engineer. Railroad bonds were a popular investment during the second half of the 19th century which helped prompt Henry Varnum Poor to publish his "History of Railroads and Canals in the United States" in 1860. This work enabled investors to see comprehensive financial information on just about all railroad companies. This pamphlet includes a very nice folding map of "The Saint Paul and Chicago Railway.". The map which was printed by Baker of Chicago and then married with the text prior to issue at St. Paul delineates the extent of the rail lines in Minnesota with the trunk projected to beyond the Canadian border and branches to Sioux City Superior etc. Included are estimates of profits to be accrued from tonnage as well as the eventual sale of the granted lands. A promotional piece extolling "The Progress of Manchuria" following the establishment of Manchukuo a puppet state of the Empire of Japan in northeast China and Inner Mongolia produced in conjunction with the 1933 Century of Progress International Exposition at Chicago. Established in 1906 the Japanese-owned and operated South Manchuria Railway Company or Mantetsu for short was charged with a government-like role in managing the rail transportation and urban planning after the Japanese invasion in 1931.<br/><br/>"It is conceded by all that the rapid industrial agricultural and educational development of Manchuria during the past 28 years is chiefly due to Japanese investments and the enterprise of her industrialists and skilled technicians. In all this important work the South Manchuria Railway Company has taken the lead and it is largely through the foresight confidence and intelligence of the administration of this great artery of commerce that has made Manchuria a prosperous and peaceful land for the past twenty years. This explains why the great migration of nearly 8000000 to Manchuria took place in the last few years. Here they found a land of peace and plenty until the war lords taxed and exploited them to the limit so they declared their independence as did the Americans in 1776."<br/><br/>This folding brochure opens to a railway map of the region which shows four sections under construction. A delicate little pamphlet 5 1/4 x 5 1/16 inches with a fragile string-tied binding. Wrappers are soiled and chipped; some minor tearing to pages at binding but booklet remains intact; first leaf sticking at binding. Half inch triangular chip missing from back wrapper. Toning and soiling inside. What at first glance seems to be a typical child's ABC book is in reality a land promotional piece for the Chicago & North-Western Railway. "R is for Railroad train with equipment the best; Which on the North -Western Will take you out West." Includes a small inset map of the Chicago North-Western Railway and 8 pages of text extolling the virtues of the million acres of land the railway owns ready to sell in southern Minnesota and southeastern Dakota. An alphabet book in rhyme that includes text describing the benefits of moving to Dakota Minnesota and other places served by the Chicago and North Western Railway Company. 4 copies found on OCLC which lists the date as 1889.
