The United States assumed custodial power over Cuba under the treaty ending the Spanish-American War. Cuba gained formal independence in 1902 as the Republic of Cuba but the U.S. continued to keep troops in Cuba and retained the right to intervene in its internal and foreign affairs. During this period which lasted to 1908 with later incursions the U.S. military supervised the development of the local military and implemented several public-works projects such as a modern railroad system. Printed wrappers. Frontispiece plate 81 pages. First edition. Scarce Western promotional travel guide to the Pacific North-West. Addressed prospective settlers and travelers alike this guide consists of historical geographical and agricultural information and discusses at length matters s as commerce climate education taxes prices and the regions of the Pacifi North-West. Each county is described and suggestions are provided to prospective emigrants such as "In mercantile pursuits the opening is good f men of enterprise and capital; but the chances for mere clerks are not good." Farm labor wages in these parts are recorded as being between $25 and $30 per month and lumber mills wages between $60 and $90 per month for first-class hands. It is also noted that "Chinamen work for the railroads and boards themselves at $1.00 a day and in winter take contracts for grubbing brush land." There are ten full-page illustrations which include a two-page "Bird's Eye Vi of Portland Oregon" "Saw Mill on Puget Sound W.T." "Astoria Oregon Entrance to Columbia River" "First Street Portland Oregon" and "Commercia Street Seattle W.T." with folding map of the region Unfolded 28 1/2 x 18 inches in the back. A rare and extravagant promotional for the Pacific Cable Railway Company which manufactured installed and operated the famous streetcar system of San Francisco and in several other American cities. The present work also serves as a declaration of patent with a list of patents and patent holders at the rear and the text comprises a detailed technical description of the wire cable system with many illustrations of its mechanisms and operation as well as general accounts of the systems running in San Francisco Los Angeles Chicago and Kansas City. In addition to the technical diagrams are several attractive line illustrations and eight photolithographed plates reproduced by artotype of the cable cars of San Francisco in action all by Britton & Rey. Wrappers separated along spine last two text leaves loose. FIRST EDITION. The map shows the northern half of the U.S. from the Pacific to Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. The proposed railroad extends from the Missouri River near Fort McKean westward to the towns of Olympia Portland Seattle and terminating at Whatcom just north of Bellingham. The route splits into a northern and southern branch just above Coeur d'Alene Lake. The publisher Jay Cooke was the famous financier of the Civil War; his private bank financed the construction of the railroad. A scarce advertisement for bond investment in the Northern Pacific Railroad issued in 1871 during the first great construction push on the line. Although the company was founded in 1865 ground was only broken on construction in 1870 after considerable backing by Jay Cooke. This pamphlet outlines the plans for the railroad to be built from St. Paul to Portland and Seattle the prospects for passenger and freight business upon completion and the extent of the land grants afforded the railroad by the federal government. The text goes on to describe the financial instruments on offer their advantages over Treasury bonds chiefly a greater yield at 7-8% vs. 5-6% and their security against the commercial and financial assets of the railroad as well as its land grants. With a map of the proposed route on the rearmost panel. A scarce call for investment in the Northern Pacific from its early history. unknown books
