An important and popular American edition of this biography of George Stephenson (1781-1848), and his son Robert (1803-1859). The father was one of the inventors founders of the modern railway, having built and operated the first steam locomotive and track system in the world at a British colliery. His son, an engineer, managed his father's Newcastle Locomotive Works; helped design and construct locomotives with his father; and was also renowned for the bridges he constructed.According to preface, this is a revised edition written ten years after the first (1857), primarily to report the "extraordinary progress" in railway construction all over the world since that date. It is quite a remarkable work that deserves greater attention. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! W138
