This work contains a massive amount of information relating to using railroads to transport mail across the continent. As part of the analysis in supporting railway mail service the special commission provides charts that show profits and expenses for 114 railroad companies and postal statistics between 1789 and 1877. The costs relating to delivering mail by rail are shown in a few ways including the transport costs per foot of train. Interestingly the pamphlet touches on the skills and importance of postal clerks and suggests that they should not be fired except for cause. Government Printing Office, books

Il discorso "Quintodecimo" non poteva non proseguire con uno studio sul nostro ufficio postale. Nei suoi quasi cento anni di vita l'agenzia postale ha contribuito a costruire quel senso di appartenenza della nostra comunità al pari delle figure sacerdotali, dei gruppi sportivi e di tutte quelle occasioni di gioia o di dolore che hanno visto coinvolto il nostro antico borgo. La ricerca di notizie sull'ufficio postale mi ha portato a rintracciare i vecchi dipendenti e ad interrogarli, a cercare la cancelleria che lì si usava, a sfogliare pagine polverose di vecchi registri. Ho cercato di vivere e respirare l'aria ed i sentimenti che generazioni di compaesani hanno vissuto magari con una lettera dal fronte o un pacco da oltreoceano. Ancora una volta "Quintodecimo" mi ha affascinato ed in questo spaccato della sua storia mi sono perso ed inebriato. Spero, in queste poche pagine, proviate anche voi la stessa emozione.
