19848588Australian Institute of Aboriginal Studies 1984. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. Scarce oversized paperback xii 160 pages b&w and colour photos NOT ex-library. Minor gentle wear book is clean and bright with unmarked text free of inscriptions and stamps firmly bound. -- Madarrpa Funeral at Gurka'wuy a film made by Ian Dunlop of Film Australia records the burial of a young child who died unexpectedly at a small Aboriginal settlement on Trial Bay in north-east Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia. The child belonged to the Madarrpa clan of the Yolngu linguistic group whose lands extend over most of north-east Arnhem Land. This book is considerably more than a guide to the film. Although focused on a single burial ceremony it also provides an understanding of the Yolngu ceremonial system as a whole. By taking into account the relevant social background the author is able to explain the process of planning the ritual performance as well as showing the meaning it had for the performers their rationale for the forms they used and their participation. Most importantly the religious meanings of the forms - paintings songs and ritual dances - and their manifold symbolism is explained. The book and film work together to bring both understanding and a sense of participation to readers and viewers: the film presents a visual account of the dances and ritual sequences conveying the energy and emotion of the participants; the book recreates the time and space of the ceremony through prose but is also able to pause throughout the description to recapitulate and reconsider the same event from different perspectives and to provide essential background information.

Australian Institute of Aboriginal Studies paperback
