194932912N.P.: United States Navy 1949. First Edition. Soft cover. Fair. Oblong quarto stapled soft cover. 32 pages. Illustrated with black and white photographs. Paper is scuffed front upper corner and the edges of the back cover. The blurb on the verso of the front cover reads "This booklet gives a sketch of the life and work of the ship's company of the U.S.S. Philippine Sea CV 47 and of Carrier Air Group One during a training cruise in the Caribbean area in the fall of 1949." Some of the pages have light pencil commentary from one of the crew officers. Fair. Four of the pages inside have light pencil commentary from an unknown Officer that went by the initials "py". The first comment regards Captain R. R. Waller USN Commanding Officer - "The best Captain I've ever had the pleasure to serve with - py." The second page of comments is found on the Memorial Service of LTJG C. M. Hicks of VA-14v - "Hicks sat in the chair on my left at the meal table. He was a laughing joking devel-may-not-care type who left a wife and child behind when his engine failed at take off- py." The third page with a note concerns "Mount 54." Py states "I was safety observer for this mount. Made sure they were shooting the target and not the tow plane. I was proud altho I had nothing to with their accuracy. - py". The last page of comments by the crew member is on the fire room page. Py states "It's not a fire room. It's an engine room. It's where I stand watches as officer of the watch. Chief Berry located on the photograph has stood many watches with me as Chief in charge of No. 1 engine room. When on watch I supervise also 7 other other major engineering spaces and each has a Chief -in- charge. Sometimes I wish you could see me in operation such as lighting off the plant an prior to getting underway. Would have a better idea of the kind of officer I am - py." From wikipedia: USS Philippine Sea CV/CVA/CVS-47 AVT-11 was one of 24 Essex-class aircraft carriers of the United States Navy and the first ship to be named for the Battle of the Philippine Sea. She was launched on 5 September 1945 after the end of World War II and sponsored by the wife of the Governor of Kentucky. During her career Philippine Sea served first in the Atlantic Ocean and saw several deployments to the Mediterranean Sea as well as a trip to Antarctica as a part of Operation Highjump. Sent to the Korean Peninsula at the outbreak of the Korean War she sent aircraft in support of United Nations ground troops first during the Battle of Pusan Perimeter and then during the Inchon Landings and the Second Battle of Seoul. She subsequently supported UN troops during the surprise Chinese attack and the Chosin Reservoir Campaign. Philippine Sea saw three tours to Korea during the war receiving nine battle stars for her service. For the remainder of her service she operated primarily out of San Diego and San Francisco seeing several deployments to the Far East and being redesignated an anti-submarine warfare carrier. She was decommissioned on 28 December 1958 and sold for scrap in 1970. [United States Navy] unknown

Pair of Patriotic Memorial Textiles Commemorating the Voyage of the Great White Fleet 1907-1908

190731197N.p. Japan ca 1907. Pair of large trapunto banners both removed from original frames. First 82cm x 60cm ca 32" x 24"; embroidered in silk with trapunto elements on a black silk ground; photographic portrait on cabinet card inserted in embroidered pocket at center inscribed "Mellie McKeever" on verso. Silk ground fragile with a few thin tears but no significant losses; light soil; embroidered portions generally well-preserved and colors bright. Very Good. Second banner 65cm x 50cm ca 25" x 20"; photo-transfer on silk with embroidered ornaments. Slight fading to embroidered portions but generally well-preserved and sound; Very Good. Both banners with firm provenance purchased from the descendants of Mellie McKeever of Richwood West Virginia. Two exceptional and well-preserved examples of the ornamental trapunto banners that were popular souvenirs among U.S. sailors and marines during the late 19th and early 20th century. Yokohama was the principal point of production for these naval souvenirs but we have also seen examples from the Philippines and mainland China; Japanese examples such as these are generally distinguished by a higher quality of embroidery and more sophisticated composition. The banners became popular among British and American sailors beginning as early as the Boxer Rebellion and the Spanish-American War but seem to have reached their peak of popularity with the arrival in the Far East of Teddy Roosevelt's Great White Fleet in 1908. Some 14000 sailors and marines made land at various Japanese ports-of-call in that year and given the regularity with which these textiles still appear one imagines that every sailor must have brought at least one of these souvenirs home with him. The first example though of an unusually impressive size is of a type frequently seen displaying typical naval iconography right down to the hand-painted battleship portrait of a two-stack battleship of the Kearsarge class its hull painted white reflecting its peace-time mission at bottom center. The embroidered frame to hold a cabinet portrait of the sailor or perhaps a loved one is a typical feature found on more elaborate examples. The American Eagle in full battle stance is a nearly universal element of these banners. The second banner is of a style we have not previously seen and for which we can find no analogues in the extensive literature of naval souvenirs. It is clearly a family portrait probably a composite made from cartes-des-visites carried by McKeever; the portraits are printed by silkscreen using a photo-transfer process with applied trapunto decorations. The likenesses are clearly enlarged -- it is highly unlikely that a common sailor would have had room aboard a battleship to carry full-size portraits -- and it strikes us that this must have seemed an almost magical process at the time of creation especially to a young man from a tiny lumber-and-coal town in central West Virginia. Aside from their obvious virtues as objects of art and handicraft we regard these banners as compelling pieces of material culture from a period of tremendous social transformation in the United States. According to the Naval Historical Center U.S. naval rolls expanded by nearly 400% between the beginning of the Spanish-American War and the launching of the Great White Fleet. To meet this demand for the first time in its history the Navy began recruiting from the American heartland rather than solely from the Eastern Seaboard states. The generation of inland farmers and mechanics to follow was thus the first in American history to experience first-hand cultures as diverse and divergent from their own as those of Europe Asia and the Pacific Islands; they represented not only the beginning of the American imperialist enterprise but also the first stirrings of America's global consciousness. That so many of these banners have survived in good condition is evidence of the degree to which they were treasured by their owners for whom they represented an experience that must have been transformative and definitive. unknown

This well-illustrated photo album documents the 1st WestPac Cruise of the USS Bennington CVA-20 from 1955-1956 of the USS Bennington featuring stopovers in Hawaii Hong Kong Okinawa the Philippines and Japan as well as photos of other cruises in South America and the Caribbean with stopovers in Cuba Haiti Argentina Uruguay and Chile.

With 239 tipped-in original silver gelatin photos ranging in size from 2 x 2 in. to 8 x 10 in. currency several colour printed postcards 1 tipped-in 4 pp. brochure for the Japanese Nara Temple complex annotations identifying locations and captions throughout. Blue cloth 3-ring binder silver lettering stamped on front cover occasional soiling to a few leaves minor damage to couple corners still VG exemplar. This photo album supplies an excellent visual and historical record of the USS Bennington modernized attack aircraft carrier after her rebuild in 1955. The Bennington had been rebuilt after damage sustained from a catapult explosion and boiler explosion in 1954. She participated in operations with the US Atlantic fleet including a shake-down cruise to Guantanamo Bay Cuba with ATG-201 and then sailed around Cape Horn to San Diego then onto Hawaii and over to ASia where she served with the Pacific Fleet. These images show the USS Bennington under steam with F9F jets F2H Banshees and AD-6 Skyraiders taking off from the decks setting on the decks and even a Banshee lost overboard. The photos also depict shipboard life hijinks during the crossing of the equator in 1955 visits to theaters street scenes in Hong Kong Chinese junks the famed Tiger Balm Garden in Hong Kong which was demolished for redevelopment in 2004 poverty of residents in the countryside as well as views of the Philippines. The section on Japanese nightspots the red-light district theatre cultural spots and a number of images on the temple complex at Nara are included. The USS Bennington was later involved in the Sydney Australia incident in May 1957 when ten Univ. of Sydney students dressed as pirates boarded the ship entered the bridge and set of an incident by claiming they had captured the ship. The carrier was on hand for the 1960 Laotian crisis served three tours in the Vietnam War and was the recovery vessel for the Apollo 4 mission in November 1967. She was decommissioned in 1970 and sold for scrap in 1994. N.P., hardcover
