It was compiled under the supervision of Louis Marie Bajot 1775-d. “after 1854“ Inspector General of the library of the ministry of the French navy in collaboration with Angliviel in charge of the ministry’s library of maps and charts.

The compilation of the catalogue required remarkable cooperation of numerous librarians in Paris the ports and far-flung places such as Pondicherry and Guadeloupe. The catalogue in fact lists the contents of no less than eleven libraries belonging to the Ministère de la Marine: its main library and the Dépot général des Cartes et Plans in Paris; the libraries of the naval bases at Cherbourg Brest Lorient Rochefort and Toulon; and the naval hospitals of these ports except for Lorient. It also gives a list of six colonial naval libraries.

In all cases the names of the librarians in charge and their salaries are given interestingly Bajot’s was 7000 frs while Angliviel’s was more than double at 18000 frs per year. This information is repeated in the preliminary matters of each volume. The catalogue itself preferably describes the copies of the two Paris libraries otherwise those in one of the other nine libraries; three columns indicate the symbols and shelf numbers of the eleven libraries in three columns headed “Ports†“Hôspitaux†and “Paris.†

During the Restoration and especially under Louis-Philippe the binding atelier of the Imprimerie Royale under the direction of a certain Courtois bound the official publications of the Imprimerie in good calf bindings for the ministries and in richly gilt deluxe morocco for the King and the Crown Prince the Duc de Nemours second son of Louis-Philippe had succeeded his elder brother on his death in 1842 as Prince Royal. These binding for the Duc de Nemours are particularly successful for the handsome treatment to the wide spines.

The Duc de Nemours who was himself an important book collector was greatly interested in the Navy and especially the colonies having participated in the conquest of Algeria. His library was dispersed many years after his death in 1931-32.

Preserved in five lined red cloth boxes morocco labels on backs.

9850Boston: Commonwealth of Massachusetts 1785. Broadside 16.125†x 13.25â€. Title above two columns of text. CONDITION: Good old folds with a few small losses to lettering and ornamental border along folds mostly reinstated by hand.
One of only two known copies of an eighteenth-century broadside consisting of sailing directions centering around the Gurnet Light on the north side of Plymouth Bay to guide ships entering and leaving one of the most historic harbors in the United States—the site of the Mayflower’s landing.

This pilot was originally published in 1768 in connection with the construction of what is thought to have been the second lighthouse “on the Gurnet head†which included twin beacons or “two lanthorns†as noted in the directions distinguishing it from the Boston Light and making it the first twin lighthouse in America. It was built on land rented from John and Hannah Thomas for five shillings a year and John served as its first keeper. During the Revolutionary War John Thomas raised and served with a regiment of volunteers from Plymouth County. Following his departure from home Hannah took over his lighthouse duties making her the first female lighthouse keeper in America. John died from smallpox in Quebec in 1776 and Hannah continued to serve as keeper until 1786.

The Gurnet or Gurnet Point is located at the end of a long narrow peninsula that together with Saquish Neck forms the northern boundary of Plymouth Bay and protects it from some of the sea’s mightiest swells. The Gurnet lighthouse served as a critical aid in navigation through much of the latter half of the eighteenth century. These sailing directions advise “to the southward you may bring them the twin lights in one which is a very good Mark to clear you of Brown’s Island or Sand Bank.†Mariners “coming from the northward bound into Plymouth†are warned “you must not bring the Lights more Southerly than S. by W. to avoid High Pine Ledge which lays N. from the Gurnet Head about two and a half and three miles…†A number of other navigational hazards are mentioned throughout these very detailed directions including the Gurnet Rock Dick’s Flat Muscle Banks etc. While printed from a different typesetting the text of this second edition is nearly identical to that of the first edition suggesting that the directions had proven quite reliable.

The Boston Marine Society began as a fellowship of mariners in 1742 and was incorporated in 1754. Among its founders was Moses Bennet the first of the committee members mentioned in this broadside’s title. The Society was founded to “make navigation more safe†1754 charter and to provide relief for the families of mariners lost at sea. “The construction of lighthouses and placement of buoys and markers has often been accomplished with the advice of the Society. Of particular concern to the Society was the appointment of pilots to see to the safe passage of vessels in and out of the port†The Boston Marine Society.

While OCLC appears to indicate eight holdings for the 1768 edition consultation of the catalogs of the libraries listed reveals that just two have physical copies Harvard and AAS. The Boston Public Library is also listed as having a copy of the 1768 but theirs is actually the 1785 edition. The OCLC records for the 1785 edition are similarly misleading showing what initially appears to be five physical holdings but all of these turn out to be digital or microform. Bristol and Ford record only the BPL copy. In short there are just two recorded examples of the 1768 edition and one of the 1785.

An exceptionally rare and vital New England maritime broadside of the eighteenth-century.

REFERENCES: Bristol R.P. 1824164820Bombay: Printed at the Courier Press by Shreecrustna Jagonathjee Prabhoo for the Honourable East India Company 1824. Regulating the "Bombay Buccaneers" the gendarmerie of the Gulf First and sole edition of the earliest maritime regulations printed in India detailing the day-to-day governance of the Bombay Marine the East India Company's navy. Rare with only two institutional locations recorded. Founded in 1612 and based successively at Surat and Bombay the Marine became a principal instrument of British expansion from the Red Sea to Southeast Asia supporting major campaigns against the Marathas the Mysore and Burmese states and - most prominently - the Wahabi Qasimi confederation in the Gulf. Its squadron played a decisive role in the 1809 and 1819 operations culminating in the General Treaty of Peace earning high praise from naval commanders and Governor Mountstuart Elphinstone. The Marine was equally important as a surveying body. These regulations illuminate the rigorous expectations placed on officers such as Blair McCluer Ross and Brucks whose coastal surveys from the Gulf to the China Seas underpinned British navigation for decades. The text formalizes command responsibilities shipboard discipline victualling and punishments and mandates systematic hydrographic surveying accompanied by 17 templates for logs and accounts. Issued under Henry Meriton superintendent and commander of the Gulf Squadron they reflect the Marine's transition into a permanently deployed regional force at a pivotal moment in Company rule. 1925182328Various locations: 1925-27. An individual's snapshot of the chaotic 1920s in China An impressive album and collection of loose photographs recording the voyages of USS West Virginia and USS Beaver. The photographs many taken by a fellow sailor feature US ships underway the recovery of a seaplane and Pacific islands. A number show China in the warlord period of the mid 1920s documenting the gruesome public executions of thieves and other dissidents. Harold Caldwell 1907-1984 enlisted in the US Navy at age 18 and was immediately assigned to the West Virginia. During the 1920s this ship conducted training manoeuvres in the Atlantic and Pacific. In 1924 she became the flagship for the Commander Battleship Divisions Battle Fleet of Asiatic Station then helped to trial the defences of Hawaii and Australia. Caldwell's album opens with official photographs of this tour including shots of other ships operating in the region such as the USS Langley the first American aircraft carrier. The album's most striking feature is a collection of personal and souvenir photographs of Qingdao Shanghai and Hong Kong during the turbulent 1920s many taken by Caldwell and his fellow sailor H. B. Grapes of the USS Beaver. The Beaver was based in the city and assigned to support submarines throughout the Asiatic Station. Over 20 annotated prints record the chaos and brutality of the region depicting public beheadings the supposedly outlawed "death by a thousand cuts" prisoners in the stocks and military tribunals. Further images show Hong Kong from the water the premises of Lao Feng Xiang Jewellery company and the streets of Shanghai blockaded with sandbags. In 1927 communist sympathizers in Shanghai were brutally suppressed by Chang Kai-Shek's forces and Western soldiers were deployed to protect their country's citizens. These soldiers can be seen laying barbed wire and surveying the streets in multiple photographs. Later in the album there are official photographs of the Pacific life at sea and the ship's officers and men. The loose photographs capture the crossing of the Equator and associated festivities operations in Panama and many individual portraits of sailors. Folio 350 x 205 mm. 18820001171ABOARD THE HMS ALEXANDRA EGYPT. Very Good. 1882. On offer is the original manuscript eyewitness account of the Bombardment of Alexandria Egypt between July 11th - 13th 1882 handwritten by participant Captain George James Tomlin Royal Navy 1837 - 1906. This is a superb primary source account by a Royal Navy Officer and a participant in the bombardment augmented by photographic material and as such rare and unique. Captain George J. Tomlin the second generation in a line of four men who all became Royal Navy Officers. He was on board HMS Alexandra during the British assault on Alexandria and provides a detailed first-hand account of the battle. He notes: 'the Alexandra was struck about 30 times to the hull. she had 1 man killed and 30 wounded'. The narrative describes the battle and both collectors and historians will be impressed by the details provided in the written manuscript. Tomlin lists the participating ships their guns losses method of attack etc. and also comments on political figures such as Admiral Seymour Prime Minister Gladstone and Colonel Urabi; 'during the bombardment 700 out of 1200 Egyptians were killed outright.' The Bombardment of Alexandria 1882 by the British Mediterranean Fleet took place on 11-13 July 1882. Admiral Sir Frederick Beauchamp Seymour was in command of a fleet of about 15 Royal Navy ironclad ships which sailed to Alexandria when a riot broke out and Europeans were killed. The Royal Navy arrived in the port city to protect the lives and property of British subjects. When the forces of Colonel Urabi began augmenting their port fortifications the Admiral issued an ultimatum to stop and when the Egyptians didn't stop fortifying their positions the fleet attacked. The one-day bombardment of the city was successful in defeating all of the Egyptian forts with no loss of British ships but the next day a fire broke out and the areas of Alexandria in which Europeans made their homes were predominant burned down. This important historic archive is befittingly contained in a stunning contemporary specifically made premium folio sized folder made of marbleized papers leather spine and gilt title treatment to protect the sixteen 16 leaves of the twenty 20 page narrative together with one large photograph of Dutch House in Port Said with HMS Invincible and HMS Alexandra at anchor one photograph of the Officers and Ladies of HMS Alexandra as well as one photograph of a formation of British Army soldiers as well as four 4 further photographs of various Europeans in Egypt. 40313Large octavo 230 x 150 mm in the original Admiralty-style binding of straight-grain red morocco with elaborate gilt border incorporating stars wreaths and cornerpieces spine gilt in six compartments; inner dentelles; all edges gilt; original marbled endpapers; engraved title-page with date in manuscript 1st October 1794 although the list has additions to 1801; 200 pp. each with an identical engraved heading with manuscript entries in black and red ink below set out in tabular form within red-ruled lines; mostly written in one hand with occasional alterations or additions in a second; remarkably fresh throughout. A record of the ships in Nelson’s Royal Navy from 1794-1801 with a distinguished Royal provenance being a manuscript copy prepared for Ernst Augustus Duke of Cumberland and King of Hanover 1771-1851 fifth son of George III. The register classifies ships by rating; within each rating vessels are arranged alphabetically. The entries include dimensions date built draught complement of men armaments shipwright or origin e.g. ""Taken from the French""; ""Taken from the Dutch"" and occasionally fate e.g. ""Lost 1790""; ""Taken 1801"". The might of the Royal Navy in the early stages of the long wars with France is demonstrated statistically by the sheer number of vessels that are indicated as having been captured from the French. The presence or indeed absence of the following vessels in the register is of specific Australian interest: the First Fleet store ship Supply the third HMS Supply which was decommissioned in April 1792 is not listed but its namesake the fourth HMS Supply - originally the American mercantile ship New Brunswick purchased by the Admiralty in October 1793 then renamed and sent out to Botany Bay to replace her predecessor - is; the other First Fleet naval vessel HMS Sirius was wrecked in March 1790 and so does not appear in the register; HMS Gorgon the 44-gun fifth-rate ship which sailed to New South Wales as part of the Third Fleet is recorded. The most notable vessel with an Australian connection however is HMS Investigator listed under the rating 'Sloops rigged as Ships'. She was originally the mercantile Fram launched in 1795 which the Royal Navy purchased in 1798 and renamed HMS Xenophon before she was converted to a survey ship in 1801 under the name HMS Investigator. In 1802 under the command of Matthew Flinders she would become the first ship to circumnavigate the Australian continent. Interestingly an annotation in red ink in the entry for Investigator records that she was bought in 1798 as Swan - clearly a clerical error for Fram. unknown

A nice folk art example of "Grafica Russa" Russian Graphics of the early 20th century combining graphic design illustration and calligraphic interest. paperback
81637United States Navy. Demonstration Model. Demonstration Model--equipment. Very good. Lockheed Martin completed a 23-year production run of Mk4 reentry body assembly hardware kits used to house nuclear warheads in the Trident I C4 and Trident II D5 submarine launched ballistic missile arsenal. The Mk4 reentry system developed jointly in the early 1970's by the Navy Strategic Systems Programs and the Department of Energy DOE is specifically designed to house the missile's W76 nuclear warhead. The W76 is a United States thermonuclear warhead designed for use on the UGM-96 Trident I sea-launched ballistic missiles SLBMs and subsequently moved to the UGM-133 Trident II. The first variant the W76 mod 0 W76-0 was manufactured from 1978 to 1987 and was gradually replaced by the W76 mod 1 W76-1 between 2008 and 2018 completely replacing the Mod 0 in the active stockpile. In 2018 it was announced that some Mod 1 warheads would be converted to a new W76 mod 2 W76-2 version. The first Mod 2 warheads were deployed in late 2019. The W76-0 was fitted inside a Mk4 reentry vehicle reentry body in US Navy parlance while the W76-1 and -2 are fitted inside the new Mk4A reentry vehicle. This MK4/SE Surelock demonstration model may have been produced by Lockheed Martin. The Mk4 SE Surelock is a demonstration model for a system to allow a Mk4 Reentry Body not Vehicle this is for the Navy to be lifted and attached to various mounting fixtures. The proposed system was accepted and became "Captive Bolts"

The need for such a system revolved around the fact that the Mk4 arrives mounted in a container and must then be detached from that and lifted to a series of mounting stands associated with various RB tests and checks.

The system accomplishes this through the use of a precision adjustable screw arrangement. By turning the screw settings can be achieved that
- allow the RB to be detached from its container
- allow a lifting fixture to be attached to the Surelock system and thus the RB
- allow the hoisted RB to be then attached to any of the required mounting fixtures
- allow the lifting fixture to be removed from the Surelock

The model itself is comprised to represent three things:
- the wide bottom disc is a "mounting fixture"
- the second smaller disc plus the screw assembly is "the RB" or specifically the RB and the "Captive Bolt" that is part of the RB or more specifically part of the RBA or RB Assembly
- the yellow collar is a "lifting fixture"

By turning the screw one can achieve two new configurations:
- the lifting collar can be removed as it would be after the RB has been placed and secured onto a mounting fixture
- the mounting fixture the wide base can be firmly attached representing a mounted RB or released i.e. when the RB is be lifted to the next mounting fixture

"The Manual" is the typed set of instructions on the underneath of the base. 18660001640ASEA ABOARD USS DACOTAH BRAZIL FALKLAND IS. Fair. 1866. On offer is a super original 1866 manuscript relic of maritime and naval history being a journal handwritten by US Navy Asst. Engineer Hiram Parker Jr. Dated January 26th 1866 and ending on May 13th 1866 Parker details his voyage on the noted gunboat USS Dacotah to Rio de Janiero Medina Brazil and last entries were from the Faulkland sometimes Falkland Islands known as the Malvinas Islands to most South Americans. Parker and his ship arrive at the height of the intense and horrific "Great War of La Plata" 1864 - 1870 a war against Paraguay which was the bloodiest and most expensive in South American history. Parker does a super job observing and detailing the people the sights and of course matters of interest to a US seaman but first and foremost he spends most of his time describing the culture the people and the politics of Brazil. This is a 7" x 8 1/2" journal has narrative on 86 pages most are full pages. He mentions one young crew member being hit on the head by a sheet block while asleep cracking his skull and killing him also diving boys off ship for coins different machine repairs to the ship but our author has a lovely way with words and carries his love for Country and the ship on his sleeve: "We have indeed been having some rough weather. How the wind did blow & how high the waves ran. I never saw either excelled in all my precious sea going. Ur little craft showed herself equal to the emergency though she experienced a terrible rolling. American oak and iron and American hearts under the American ensign protected by the God of Nations should be equal to any emergency." Each page is filled with interesting observations when they reach Brazil from the holiday for the Emperor's grandson to entries like this: "Acting Master Price was buried in Potters field for the Catholics never permit Protestants to be buried in their cemeteries." This diary is really outstanding for bringing the reader right into the heart of Brazil through the eyes of an heroic 25 year old American veteran of the Civil War with the soul of a poet. 18790002013ASEA ABOARD THE HMS TRIUMPH HMS TURQUOISE. Very Good. 1879. On offer is a super original manuscript relic of naval life and adventure for a young British midshipman and future Admiral named Albert Sumner Lafone during his service and first voyage on H.M.S. Triumph Flag Ship of the Pacific Squadron in the years 1879 - 1880. Titled 'Extracts from letters written by to his mother while on his first voyage' the elegant 9 x 7 inch black limp leather covers gilt panelling and marbled endpapers. The 104 pages are fair copies in a secretarial hand or perhaps a scrivener of the intimate descriptive letters to his mother of the future Admiral Lafone while under the command of the Arctic explorer Captain Albert Markham likely written soon afterwards by a friend or family member from the originals which are unaccounted for. Albert proves to be a gifted writer making for keen eyed observation and intelligence. He provides significant accounts of the 'stirring events' of the Battle of Iquique between the navies of Bolivia Peru and Chile sent from HMS Turquoise illustrated with a 'rough' chart ending in the ruse by which the Independencia's Captain 'endeavoured to ram the Covadonga. The threatened blow was skilfully avoided by a sudden rush ahead and the great ironclad ran right up on to the reef the surf breaking over her. the Captain set her on fire and the crew escaped in boats'. There follows a vivid account of the sinking of the Esmerelda 'each crew firing their guns as the water touched it. They went down shouting "Viva el Chile"'. There are visits to Acapulco and an Admiralty commissioned scientific survey and research voyage to the Galapagos Islands which was written up in the Royal Geographic Society Monthly Record in 1880 with its 'lava rocks' and San Francisco the Lafone finds himself moored at Esquimault in British Columbia where the ship is refitted and he devotes himself to observation of local culture: 'About 2 miles from the ship there is an indian village; the people are half civilised'. This doesn't prevent games of football with locals vividly described rowing races visits by trainee Japanese officers and a fund raising drive for a ball and provision of a social club despite criticism of 'the society about here' as 'regular republicans'. 17882680Paris: S.n. 1788. First edition. Sewn binding. Protected with blank paper wrappers. Title and date in ink on the front cover by a later neat hand. Printed on thick paper. Partly uncut untrimmed. With a few contemporary corrections in the text in ink like in other copies. Some stains on the cover. Inside clean. Overall in fine condition. First edition. Sewn binding. Protected with blank paper wrappers. 6 52 2 p.
A scarce and interesting source of the French efforts to colonize Guiana in the late 18th century.

By the Treaty of Paris in 1763 France lost almost all her possessions in the Americas thus the relevance of her remaining islands on the Antilles and the territories in the Guianas dramatically increased. The first ill-fated attempt to colonize Guiana with some 12000 men in 1763 failed with a loss of about ten thousand settlers killed by tropical diseases and hostile natives. The second endeavor in 1776 was much more successful. Under the administration of Pierre-Victor Malouet and with the assistance of the Swiss engineer Jean Samuel Guisan — and the heavy use of slave work — France established flourishing agriculture in the colony. This period ended very soon in the early 1790s when French Guiana was partly turned into a penal colony for political prisoners of the Revolution.

The present 1788 pamphlet describes the ill-fated first and the more successful second wave of colonization and designs an administrative plan based on slave work for the future success of the colony. Many chapters deal with the slaves and their work and the author states that the “government should pay for about 3000 African slaves to be introduced annually to populate Guyane until they are numerous enough to reproduce themselves.†p. 15

The essay was published anonymously but the author’s name and title were added in ink by a contemporary hand to the title page of the copy held at the British Library however for the most part it remained indecipherable to us: Par M. B… Contrôleur de la marine ….

Extremely scarce we could trace copies in institutional holdings only in France BnF Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève and the UK BL.
Sabin 29193; Hogg 1113 The African Slave Trade and Its Suppression: A Classified and Annotated Bibliography of Books Pamphlets and Periodical; Conlon 88:1966 Le siècle des lumière. 194444499Okinawa Japan; Camp Pendleton CA.; Kinston NC: Photographed and compiled by an American Marine 1944-1946. 1944 - 1946. WORLD WAR II JAPAN. First edition. Oblong octavo black leatherette string-tied photograph album 101 silver gelatin photographs with most being 4 1/4" x 5 1/4" some smaller. An interesting collection of vernacular images from World War II Okinawa documenting an American Marine Corps reservist's time on the Japanese island after the successful U.S. invasion in the spring and summer of 1945. He is identified simply as "Ronnie" in several photographs. The album was likely assembled by Ronnie's wife or girlfriend as the first item is annotated "A Christmas card from my honey" and includes a greeting in manuscript from the soldier on the verso. Eighty-nine photos emanate from Okinawa four from Camp Pendleton and eight from Camp Lejeune in Kinston N.C. and on the soldier's furlough at home likely Florida. The photographs of Okinawa feature a wide variety of interesting subjects including island views abandoned Japanese bunkers tombs Shinto shrines damaged Japanese armaments "Korean teahouse girls . the type used by the Japanese armies for entertainment purposes" Japanese natives washing clothes in the river views of villages "A native barber and his victim in the village of Ishikawa in northern Okinawa" "Native family of three enroute to a detention camp" "Jap dugout in the ‘Suicide Cliff' area" "Japanese school children and teachers" "Native women bathing" "Remains of Japanese 'Betty' pilot Yontan Airstrip" marine and army cemeteries "Ernie Pyle's grave" "Spot where Lt. Gen. Simon Bolivar Buckner was killed . June 18 1945" and many more. The U.S. invasion of Okinawa began in April 1945 and lasted eighty-two days ending on June 22. Immediately the island became an important staging area for the planning of the U.S. invasion of mainland Japan. Ultimately the invasion was not necessary after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in early August. Also taped-in are two Japanese yen bills and eight magazine excerpts featuring Okinawa scenes. Laid-in are three Florida newspapers detailing the U.S. Navy's invasion of Japan. A rare view of occupied Okinawa from an American Marine . itself a rare thing as most albums of this type come from Army boys. Minor wear to the covers else a very good copy. Photographed and compiled by an American Marine, 1944-1946. hardcover
